No I didn't mean MLS, as it is not even close in quality to the best leagues. Also soccer has/will overtake(n) both baseball and hockey in popularity among my generation.

That's great.

But I don't care for soccer.

That's great, but I don't care for a sport that requires you to be a freak athlete rather than years and years of developed skill. Might as well watch gladiator fights, or 100 meter sprints.

I also don't want to watch 3 and a half hours of commercials for 10 minutes of gameplay

That may be true. (I am American) But I think pertaining to Pro Hockey no matter what generation you are from, in Canada soccer will not overtake hockey in popularity with young men.

So that influence from the Northern U.S. border somewhat offsets the futbol influence coming from the US southern border........ Mexico.

Really do not want to take the thread in that direction and debate how soccer and American football compete.

Thank you for your imput though. And GGGGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

Lol no, the clock doesn't stop. Watch 90 minutes of action for 1 goal :)

It's about the skill, technique, passing, dribbling, touches, etc. that make it amazing to watch. I love watching videos of these guys in practice as well when they really put their skills on display. Everything isn't about scoring points

That's great and we cannot stand watching a long drawn soccer match with a 1- nil final score. Not enough scoring. Not even close to enough Shots on Goal.

Enough of this..Please do not derail this discussion of the great players in the FOUR Pro Major Sports as the title states.

I again thank you for your input and understand your side of the argument. An argument that the majority of we American men will never accept.

Just the way it is with we the American male majority and our love of our brand of football. Pro and college, heck even High School for some dudes.

As far as your perception of football, you clearly never suited up.

Its a blast and the work and planning that goes into it would blow your mind

But everything (in sports) IS about scoring points. No one wins by scoring zero.

Just as you like the skill set that soccer brings, many like the watch a QB drop a pass into a tiny window from 50 yards away, or a well timed blitz from off the corner.

As for skills, try hitting a ball coming at you at 90 mph, but not straight at you, spinning either away or towards you.

It's a simple concept. I don't understand soccer or hockey well enough to make comments on them. And certainly not well enough to run them down in order to build up the sport of my choice. Like bscinstnt said, all the things that have to happen for one single play to work correctly would astound you. Outside of the "freak" athlete simply making a play. And by that statement I'm assuming you consider football players better athletes?

I actually played my Freshman year in HS as a receiver. At the #1 football school in the country. So as a kid, I was into football, baseball, and basketball to a lesser extent, because it was what I knew. I played soccer casually as many kids here do and I enjoyed it, but I wasn't into following it. Basically I was your typical kid.

But when I got into soccer around my junior year in high school, I realized it was so much better that I couldn't watch other sports anymore. I do like hockey tho. I don't follow it, but I love to watch it. It is like soccer, those guys have serious stick skills, while being on ice is amazing to see.

In football, I respect the coaching, that is where the real game is played. But in terms of athlete skill, it does not come close to soccer.

In college, I met a ton of guys who, similar to me, once they got into soccer, lost interest in the American sports. On a subreddit for my favorite club, every Friday there is a free discussion topic where users just talk about whatever they want. The most upvoted comment last week was literally "After getting into soccer 2-3 years ago, I just can't watch American sports anymore". This comment has 116 upvotes. And it is only a community with 50,000 members, for an English team, that has tons of support in Europe and Asia as well.

My sentiment is not a rare one. Maybe it is where you guys are from, but here in California it is not

Yes they are better athletes. You can take a kid who is 16 years old who has never played before, but if he is the fastest, strongest, biggest guy, you can groom him into a football player.

In soccer, everyone started playing competitively for hours and hours in the streets, with friends, and in academies since age 5 just to be able to have any hope of making it. And you don't not make it for being too small or too slow to too weak, it's all about skill.

And if everything is about scoring points, then I'm sure you guys would love handball that was in the olympics. Easiest sport I've ever seen. Run around, throw the ball into the net. No contact, don't have to dribble, etc. It's like water polo but on land and without contact. Lots of goals scored

Current:

MLB - Madison Bumgarner

NBA - Steph Curry

NFL - Antonio Gates

NHL - Don't Follow

All-Time:

MLB - Tony Gwynn

NBA - Kobe Bryant

NFL - Tie between LaDainian Tomlinson and Barry Sanders

NHL - Don't Follow

And to include Futbol, I don't follow it much anymore but at his peak Brazil's Ronaldinho was seriously a magician with the ball.

Kurt Rambis is an interesting pick. Care to elaborate, or is it just that he was a fabulous gritty player for the great Laker Show Time teams?

MLB. Jake Arrieta - only because I have him on my fantasy baseball team. I don't really follow baseball other than that.

NFL. Larry Fitzgerald - total class act on and off the field.

NHL. Brad Keselowski in the #2 Penske Miller Light Ford - Sorry I'm a NASCAR guy.

NBA. Jimmy Butler? Not a big basketball fan anymore.

MLB. Andre Dawson - He was Awesome to watch growing up in Chicago before steroids or "supplements" were used. Back when athletes were skinny.

NFL. Ditka - a.k.a. Hurricane Ditka

NHL. Mark Martin in the #6 Roush Valvoline Ford. Total class act. Again, I'm a NASCAR guy, but not really a Ford guy. Used to like the Pontiacs and Dodges!

NBA. John Paxson was my favorite growing up, but I'm blessed to have been able to see Jordan play live. He just did amazing things on the court.

My apologies for derailing again, but this will change as soon as the soccer audience gets big enough. You see it in all sports that grow in popularity. i.e. March madness. There are so many commericals in March madness the players get a timeout every 3 times down the floor. Even though the clock doesn't stop in soccer, they will just do what they do with autoracing, picture in picture commericals or just cut away completely. They need to pay for the broadcast somehow.

It makes sense. Many underdeveloped countries dont have the means for equipment/facilities for football, baseball, hockey. And historically, soccer is a worldwide sport whereas the US has it's own history that has contributed to the popularity of our main stay sports.

Continued immigration will keep soccer growing here and that's a fine thing. And, like you, some people get into soccer/turned off by American sports. Like my brother in law, After all these years, he decided he is a soccer guy and hates our sports.

But, football isn't going anywhere anytime soon ; )

This is NOT a thread to discuss the world audience of Soccer. It not a thread to discuss how much better Soccer is than American or NFL

football. Can we just look at the title gentlemen?

I have asked nicely twice in above posts. Please scram to a Soccer blog and wave your protest sign there. Thanks and I hope we can carry on

with what I thought was a great idea for a tread. I have received two PM's stating just that already.

Look at this great guy!!! ^^

He has no answers for the NHL part of the question ( because maybe he has no interest in it?), so he just throws in a couple of his favorite's in Nascar!

He too did not need to get into a big discussion about it either.

To me that was Witty, Clever, Humorous, and NICE!
