Let's talk 2 irons

I recently gamed a Titleist 690 MB 2i w/ x100 and since then I haven't looked back. I primarily use this out of the box on short par 4's or a tight par 5. I have been looking at buying a more updated one. I see the T-MB is pretty popular and is something I'm leaving towards.

 

What is your experience with 2 irons and any 2i I should consider?

I have tried and demoed and few 2 irons (or driving irons if you want to call them that), but nothing has made me go away from my Ping Rapture 2i. I switched the graphite shaft for a DG X100 and it's been giving me the perfect flight/distance combination I want to fill that gap.

 

I also use it mostly of the tee or on par fives to get to the green in two. I did really like the Srixon Z U65 I tried recently, but it didn't bring anything more to the table than what I already play. Titleist T-MB was also very good. Didn't care much for the Callaway Apex UT.

Put up a WTB looking for one. I had 3 offers within the hour. They can be had under $100. I was looking for head only as I knew what I was doing with it. Had them ship to my builder in Arizona and he shipped back to in a couple days. 2 range sessions and 1 round and my backup was out the door. Paired with the right shaft, the UDI is really really tough to beat. I almost picked up a 4 and 5 UDI and matched them to my set because it's that easy to hit. I opted for graphite jsut for the added distance and feel. I use it exclusively off the tee FWIW.

Can't go wrong with the T-MB. I have never felt confident with 4 iron in my hand before I picked up the T-MB. I have a 3 inbound to replace my hybrid and have a buddy who hits the 2.

I hit the crossover and the feel was meh, but it launched super easy from the deck or tee. Awesome club for performance, looks and feel were kind of off for me. UDI has both performance and looks IMO.

Are we talking the RSI UDI or the TP UDI?

That does look a bit nicer than the T-MB. Do you have a preference between the two you stated?

UDI is going to be more forgiving based on my experience. 712U looks a little better at address, and is more of a players driving iron. You can shape shots if need be w/ the 712U. The Taylormade UDI is more of a point-and-shoot club that goes long and straight.

Honestly had graphite in both udi. One had a recoil 125 Stiff. Got better control going to the hzrdus but it was longer so helped with lie angle being too flat. Recoil was good. Just too whippy in a stiff and too flat. Hit the occasional snap hook. Really rare now. Just straight bullets. When I mishit now, it's still on line just not getting the same distance. I was willing to pay more for the hzrdus bc my driver acts up regularly and that Club is my safety net. If I need to find fairway, I pull the udi no questions asked

But, reality also is a tough pill to swallow.... kinda like how the purist love their manual transmissions, but tip-tronic, dual clutch systems are now faster and more efficient....

 

 

Any ways, 2 irons are a chest thumping, maniac clubs that makes any person feel, Manly and that Tigeresque... feeling.....

 

But reality.... tech has moved along so well that now there are much more greater options to use other than your standard 2 iron.

 

 

So..... Here is my point....

 

1) You want an iron off a tee box, for lets say humans that hit it 220-230 safely.....

2) You want a boring low flight? Tiger stinger?

 

 

So thoughts to consider

 

1) Driving Irons are great..... but how often do you really use it? It takes up a space of the 14 clubs...do you really really really need it?

2) With Hybrid designs and so many shaft options now, you could get a much much much more forgiving 2iron(ish) club with similar launch characteristics.....

3) Do you have a 3 irons that you could beef up a little, As I will say this, I have a 2-PW Nike Blades vs 3-PW AP2, my 3 iron AP2 while having a 1 degree difference at most, launches higher and much much more forgiving than the 2 iron.......So a simple 3 iron from many current model clubs, AP2, AP1, TM RS1 or RS2, they are slightly beefier with strong lofts yet fit nicer as a 3 iron/old 2 iron so you don have a bulky hybrid, driving iron in your bag that is still usable off the deck for longer approach shots.

 

 

Other than that.... All above suggestions are great, TM UDI, T-MB are all great.... I just giving you another out look of options....

 

I mean if tiger got away from using his old 2 iron to now use the Older VR-S Forged 3iron bent 2 iron for more forgiveness....no point in making the game any harder than it is!

The thing I have learned is that it is all about the shaft and perceived lie angle. At 6'4", I prefer a flatter lie angle (which may be weird). I feel as though I get that from my latest cally 2 iron.

 

Nothing is better than pounding a two iron just off the edge a bunker. Although, I feel like a stud when I hit one off the handle and nearly kill a beverage cart girl.... good conversation starter though.

I have the Mizuno mp fli hi 2 iron. The one that looks like the mp 30. Absolute bullet off the tee, I hit it 250 off the tee with really not much effort. Sits in my garage since I wanted a 5 wood for seconds into par 5's.

Gorgeous looking 2 iron! I will say from my experience from transitioning from my rescue/hybrid to a 2 iron is I feel a lot more comfortable with the distance control. Too often I'd juice that rescue over greens.

I always end my warm up routine with hitting a few 2 iron shots. Good indication of what my iron game is like that day. Besides, I often use it off the tee on the first hole which is a short-ish 300 meter par 4 with OB on the right and waist-high wispy rough (where you might stumble upon a ball... just not necessarily your own) on the left.

 

 

Mizuno MP-33 2 iron is still in the bag simply because I haven't found a 5 wood that can outperform it. Bent 1 degree strong (sits at 18 degrees) to blend in with my 37's.

I like the 2 or even 1 irons from the MP33 and Maxfli DP40. Similar to the 690MB but slightly smaller blades. Also had great success with these irons in the Maxfli Rev Black Dots.

Mizuno MP H4 and H5 are very good, and one of the more forgiving options. The H4 is more "clunky" to look down on, but still performs.
