Looking to rebuild my bag soon, perks of a 2 iron that is not offered by a hybrid? How are 2 irons off the deck? Any other info is much appreciated

This is all mostly personal preference, but for me, 2 irons are much more precise and consistent. It's much easier hitting precise yardages for me with a 2i. Trajectory is also much easier to control. For me, hybrids get up too high, making them very hard to control in the wind (they also tend to go left quite a bit). If you need help getting the ball up, go with a hybrid. I you have enough clubhead speed and hit the center of the face rather consistently, I would recommend the 2i/DI. Just my two cents...

This guy answers most of your questions. I was going to say it's slightly easier than a one iron. Learn what lies you can hit the 2i from and which ones you can't. Then work on hitting out of those lies too. I really appreciate the flatter trajectory and penetration into wind. Plus most people don't have them, but they do have some weak excuses for not having one, like my personal favorite "I can't hit one." They do love a quick confident swing, so just get used to going big instead of going home.

Thank you for the input! It is definitely something I will have to try out next time I am in the store because I'd love to bag one

I adore my T-MB with hzrdus black hybrid shaft in it. Off the tee or from the fairway. Very deep and it's a Pin seeker! I'd give you a review form the rough, but I'm never in it when teeing off with it! Lol. Jk

This is the build Im doing right now! I have been contacted for both UDI 2 and TMB 2 and getting pictures tonight. Will get one of them fitted for a hzrdus 6.5 graphite shaft. As I think it'll take the 2 iron to a next level having the stiffness but lighter shaft compared to the x100 steel shaft.

I've been leaning towards the T-MB as of today and might pull the trigger on that.

So which head did you end up going with, T-MB or UDI?

I believe tmb. Still waiting for the guy to send the UDI pics. If he sends them soon I'll consider but the tmb is in great shape.

I should note that except for my putter. My entire bag is Taylormade. I'll post pics once I get it in hand. Just received pictures on the TM udi so I'll pull the trigger today on one.

I have had a few 2 irons in the past couple of years, but this king Utility is a beast. It is a little chunky, but it just flat out flies. I get about 250 off the tee and I can hit it off the deck with consistency. I can also work it both says if I need to. Really a great club. My UDI is collecting dust.

Great points here. I've found the 2 iron off the tee eliminates the "big miss" that got me in trouble so much with the hybrid. With the hotter face on the hybrids and their tendency to go left, I found myself in trouble way too often after trying to be "conservative" off the tee.

My Srixon ZU45 has a pretty wide sole so off the tee and clean lies it's very easy to hit, but I leave it in the bag unless it is sitting up in the rough. A 2 iron with a narrower sole might fare better in the rough, but this is the one area where the hybrid definitely has an advantage. Otherwise, if you have the swing speed, bagging a 2 iron over a hybrid is a no brainer in my opinion. Wish I had figured this out years ago.

love me Srixon U45, Since I have put it in the bag the 3wood is a head cover holder. Low bullets off of the tee that run for days and if I need I can hit down on it and produce a fade to get a little more height when hitting into a green.

I pulled the trigger on the UDI 2 iron which will be shafted with the HZRDUS 6.5. They'll tip it to make it slightly stiffer. Pretty much the same as Roadking_6's lol

Looking forward to this experiment. If for some reason I don't like the lighter graphite and UDI combo. I may give a muscle back 2 iron of some sort with steel shaft a go. I have high hopes for this setup tho.

Flame suit on.......

I love my 03 Forged Nike Blade 2 iron......God I love that thing.... X100 and all....

But, reality also is a tough pill to swallow.... kinda like how the purist love their manual transmissions, but tip-tronic, dual clutch systems are now faster and more efficient....

Any ways, 2 irons are a chest thumping, maniac clubs that makes any person feel, Manly and that Tigeresque... feeling.....

But reality.... tech has moved along so well that now there are much more greater options to use other than your standard 2 iron.

So..... Here is my point....

1) You want an iron off a tee box, for lets say humans that hit it 220-230 safely.....

2) You want a boring low flight? Tiger stinger?

So thoughts to consider

1) Driving Irons are great..... but how often do you really use it? It takes up a space of the 14 clubs...do you really really really need it?

2) With Hybrid designs and so many shaft options now, you could get a much much much more forgiving 2iron(ish) club with similar launch characteristics.....

3) Do you have a 3 irons that you could beef up a little, As I will say this, I have a 2-PW Nike Blades vs 3-PW AP2, my 3 iron AP2 while having a 1 degree difference at most, launches higher and much much more forgiving than the 2 iron.......So a simple 3 iron from many current model clubs, AP2, AP1, TM RS1 or RS2, they are slightly beefier with strong lofts yet fit nicer as a 3 iron/old 2 iron so you don have a bulky hybrid, driving iron in your bag that is still usable off the deck for longer approach shots.

Other than that.... All above suggestions are great, TM UDI, T-MB are all great.... I just giving you another out look of options....

I mean if tiger got away from using his old 2 iron to now use the Older VR-S Forged 3iron bent 2 iron for more forgiveness....no point in making the game any harder than it is!

Time to step it up :stop:

This is exactly what I was thinking of when I started reading this topic - had the 1 and 2 iron since 2005, and have no intention of ever stopping using them. The 1 iron especially is a rocket launcher - 220 - 250 yards off the tee depending on run, further if it's summer and the fairway is bone dry.

Love 'em! I have pretty much the exact same stick as the OP. 690.MB, X-100. The best thing about them is the low ball flight. Hybrids and woods hit moon balls. It's a great option in the wind. When I went over to St. Andrews, I hit that thing off the tee more than half the time.

Nice! I actually really like the iron but I'm thinking the tree I bought it off of added length to the iron as I can't possibly see him using standard lengths on all irons. Might have to measure the length tonight to see.

I love all the roll out that iron gets you.

A lot of good option out there, but for the price the UDI's are hard to beat. Just installed the DI driving iron shaft in the 1 iron so Im looking forward to testing it. The 2 & 4 have di hybrid shafts installed.

I have been thinking about getting that driving iron shaft to put in mine. When yo get a chance to hit it, let us know how it compares to the hybrid shaft.

Finally had a chance to hit the 1 iron tonight. If you are considering the di driving iron shaft Just do it. Its very comparable to the much more expensive hybrid shaft in terms of feel and launch. I was only hitting it off a very low tee and the shaft produced a nice piercing ball flight. No ballooning whatsoever. I put a 95x straight in with no tipping. One thing to note is that they dont come raw as long as hybrid shafts. Not sure why. The shaft would be perfect if it came in a 100 or 105 gram weight.

Picked mine up from the homey Will Peoples.

I'm a 10 hdcp. At the moment, I bag the 2008 Mizuno MP Fli-Hi 18* 2 iron. I also own a MP 67 2 iron, Mizuno Comp EZ Forged 2 iron, Bridgestone J33 CB 2 iron, also a Ping i5 2 iron. I have DG S300's in all of them. I also have the Bridgestone Airmuscle with a graphite NV 85 shaft which feels the worst out of all of them. Also, I use a Comp Ez Forged 1 iron. Obviously, I struggle with woods/hybrids. For some reason, I hit 39.5" long 2 irons better than any woods. Out of all of them, I hit the J33 CB the furthest and the MP Fli-Hi the most accurate, plus it also feels the best. The Comp EZ is good, as well as the i5. Best thing about them is that they all cost about $40 off the Bay. From last July up until this month, I didn't have a wood/hybrid in my bag. My scores were waaaay better. Hardly any penalty strokes. I'm in play way more, plus I don't lose many balls. If this driver I'm trying now doesn't work out soon, the 1 iron is going back in the bag when the Am Tour season starts up. In dry and firm conditions, I have seen 260yds + with the roll out. When it's soft, avg around 225yds. Playing from 6500 yds, that is all I need.

Have to through the vapor fly pro 2 iron for discussion. Rick shiels even tested it against the Callaway and it beat it out.

+1 for the Nike vfp 2 iron, that thing is long.

But I do have a VPC 2 iron in the bag. Haven't hit it yet. Will have to find room for it somewhere if it works for me.
