If you are new to the game (as implied by you mentioning a high handicap) it's really good that you have a natural inside-out. For starters, may be a bit too far inside. Take a look at a Rory down the line video and check out where his hands and the club head are when the club is parallel to the ground.

When the hands are where they need to be (as opposed to too far in/out) the club becomes "light" = you are using more of the dead straight left arm and using right hand to just guide the club to the top. An on plane takeaway will also make it easier to create lag; when coming too far inside can get easy to start casting the club during a long range session.

You have a good swing by the look of it.

One main thing to work on (from my own swing experience) is with the camera directly behind (down the line view) during the takeaway when the club is parralel to the ground the club head should be (or appear to be on the camera) in line blocking the hands or slightly in front (outside) of the hands going back. This will put you in a much better position at the top and during transition, rather than have the clubhead behind the hands.

If you pause your video when club is parallel to the ground going back you will see where your clubhead is. Obviously the camera will need to be directly in line from behind or it will look a bit off.

As Ryan above said (beat me to it)

Looking back at the video the club head looks to be way behind me in the backswing like you guys are pointing out. What is a good drill to improve the takeaway on the backswing. Also do you think my knees are to bent at address? Any tips for aligiming my tripod better?

A good way of getting the club out in front of the hands is to feel as if the grip moves back at the same time if not before the clubhead going back. Rather than swinging the clubhead inside make sure your wrist are not initiating the backswing more of a one piece takeaway, shoulders and arms connected and no handsy movements. Keep butt of end of the club pointing at belt buckle during takaway.

Camera angle should be hand height and as best to directly behind hands as possible.

Just work on setting your wrists a little better and more vertically.

That doesn't look like a high handi swing. I wouldn't change it.

I just want a pill to improve and bring my handicap down. My current handicap is 18.6 and I would like to bring it down to an eight. My biggest issues are off the tee and hitting the wild hole with an ob or two.

I did some of your drills Monte they did wonders even thought to my eyes my swing still looks the same. The contact I was making using your drill was considerably better. I need to ingrain a feeling of that drill in so I can hopefully be more consistent. I notice my left arm breaks down on every swing. Is that a product of over swinging? Keeping it rigid straight does not feel comfortable to me. Should I work on keeping it straighter maybe shorten my swing?

One of the best high handicapper swings I've seen posted on here.

From what I can tell, you bring the club inside on the backswing pretty heavily. Since the club is pulled so far "behind" you, you have to adjust and end up coming over the top on the downswing to try and get back on plane.

AS a starting point, I would work on stopping the club from working so far behind you. To do that, maybe try and key on turning around your spine angle and setting the club earlier in the back swing. Look around and figure out a key position when your club would point at 9 o'clock, and get used to making a proper takeaway to that point.

I'm doing my best to quit bringing it inside. Monte's drill feels great and I feel like I do less redirecting. I do think that the club coming to inside is my Achilles heel. My misses are pull hooks and are the biggest contributors to shorting in the mid upper 90's. Thanks for your input I'll post a swing when I rid myself of the extreme inside takeaway.

What keeps the left arm straight is not left triceps, but it's actually your right arm. As you hinge the club up, right hand pushes against (away from the body) the grip end of the club, causing left arm to stay straight passively. Don't lose that pressure on your right thumb pad throughout the swing.

Taking the right thumb pad pressure from you and a left arm forearm rotation from Monte causes opposing forces - which is a solid and connected feeling in the hands. I often lose that connection causing a flying right elbow.

I went through my video from yesterday and my elbow looks to fly some maybe to much rotation. I'm going to go to the range today and shorten my swing and maybe try slow drills focusing more on mechanics.

swing is raw but you have a natural sense in how to use weight and generate speed. definitely a good foundation to build on.

i like the practice drill you are using (i assume it's faldo?) but instead turning the shaft full 90 degrees, just do 45 degrees. forearm doesn't rotate that much and by forcing 90 degrees you are pushing your hands out. it's also helpful to do this using left arm only. by pre-setting your forearm, all you have to focus is shoulder turn and left wrist hinge (thumb towards you, not knuckles towards you)

remember that forearm preset is just a drill. in regular swing, it's preferable that forearm rotation happens towards the end of the backswing.

I watched your swing many times to figure out what is going on. Very interesting. Your whole swing is an attempt is to rotate thru the ball. Everything fits together. Even the a cross the line position at the top is important for your downswing.

Problem is that the club head is lagging in the downswing behind the rotation of the body and this is why you are approaching the ball too far from the inside. You need in your swing a bit more up and down than around.

The combination with hands far away from the body and to move the hands in the Faldo drill away from the body will make your backswing even flatter. Start with standing closer to the ball (hands below the shoulders with iron) and without pushing the hands away from the body in the Faldo drill. This will help you to swing more upright to keep arms and body better in sync.

Your iron swings much better than woods - are you using 40 year old woods there?

You are rotating your forearms and hands too much in an attempt to set the wrists. Club face open and inside. I would work on keeping right arm straighter and club face pointed at ball longer. Weight looks too much toward toes at address. Bend hips more and get butt deeper at address.

TB07, after hearing your reviews for a while. Also, MikePGA and Monte's. It seems like there are some fundamentals we can all do a better job implementing. Such as keeping the right arm straighter in the backswing, proper weight distribution at address, deeper hip turn etc. The hard part is sticking with it. When us high cappers try these changes our swings gets worse and we go back to bad habits and the band aid swing. It's just about trusting the advice. Go backwards, to go forwards. Tanner

I can tell you how I improve my swing, but it's not a pill...usually I take copious amounts of aiming fluid, available in 12 oz cans, or 1.75 liter bottles

I got to the range yesterday day and was really unhappy with my session. It basically became a let me see how hard I can swing and watch the ball fly. Nevertheless it motivated me to try something different. After watching the video from yesterday I noticed how I was still bringing the club way inside. Today I went to the range with a different mind set. I started out with slow swings and focusing more on technique to try and feel a feeling of going more upright. I did that for a bucket and then and then decided to try and see what it would look like full speed. I'm in the process of editing today's session but here is yesterday's disaster.

Work on that takeaway, the club is to inside and across the line at the top.

That video was of yesterday. I agree with you and my main goal now is to change that. It is going to take some time since bringing the club inside and over the line feels so natural to me. I plan to keep working more upright until it displaces my old method

If you really want to change the BS, I suggest you learn it in front of one or better, two mirrors. Without hitting a ball! 70-100 times a day very slowly for one or two month.

I explain why: Your BS match your DS, this means, if you change the BS you have to learn a new DS sequence too. That's the reason why it's almost impossible to change the BS hitting balls (with a driver!). Granted that you could change your BS in a second, you would miss the ball. I've been there. You have to overwrite the old pattern first. And then start fresh with 3/4 wedges.
