3 club scramble

Have a 3 club scramble coming up for the first time. Anybody with experience on this and recommended 3 clubs to bag?

 

Thoughts running through my head.

 

1 - putter?

2 - Hybrid versus driver

3 - I am thinking 9 iron.

 

 

The other is the club make up of the team overall?

This is a decent selection. Practice blading a wedge for your putter.

 

Since it is a scramble, coordinate with the other player(s). The best driver of the ball might take a driver as one of his/her 3 clubs while the rest take 3-wood or hybrid for tee shots and long approaches. The best chipper/pitcher 2 wedges. The best putter takes a putter while the rest of the team blades their wedges.

First decide what you're going to use off the tee. Calculate the average distance you expect to have on approach shots, and choose something you're comfortable getting up and down with. Any choice can be anything. Putting with a fairway wood is obviously not like a putter, but it's not bad, especially if it's a shallow faced wood.

Having this be a scramble makes it much simpler than the thought process I just described.

 

Coordinate with your group. Best driver brings his driver, best putter brings his putter, best wedge player brings his wedge, etc.

I think you have to have a putter since it would be used the most. Hybrid, 8 iron, putter.

i went 4h, pw, putter

 

people who win these things always carry a putter. really depends on course length.

 

I shot an 80, in a 4 club, own ball tournament. would have been 90 without a putter.

 

can you use other peoples clubs?

 

I like the idea of a 200 club/150-130 club(wedge)/ and a putter

 

i guess id pick the longest clubs you feel accurate with.

I have played this more than a few times. I used a 4 wood (which also served as a chipper/putter very well) a hybrid, and a PW. People who don't use a putter don't always lose this thing. Since this is a scramble I assume one of the group will have a putter. How many in the group? Twosomes or foursomes.

- each player can choose their own 3

- course will be about 6500 yards.

- 2 hcp, 10 hcp, 20 hcp, 4th likely 20 also

 

On my own ball I am thinking.

 

Hybrid - 170 - 225 - I think I can manage this decent.

9 iron - 50 - 150

Putter

 

As a team I think

- at least 1 Driver maybe 2.

- at least 1 putter maybe 2.

I would get with the group you are playing with and see what clubs they are using. I would consider the person who hits the best drives to take a driver, best putter to take a putter. The based on skills select the other clubs for each player.

Gotta say does sound fun....gotta find one of these where everyones carrying different clubs and you gotta do your part to help team or ya suck...boom good times!

4 man scramble? Everyone HAS to have a putter IMO.

 

After that, it depends on the ability of everyone and the length of the course. If you have one or two guys who are long hitters, they should have a driver and maybe 7 iron.

 

Interesting format. I'm not a fan of 4 man scrambles, but this one sounds like it would be fun.

I played in one and won. I had driver, 54 and putter. Partner had drive, 7, and 56. It was a shorter course. Two drivers was really nice. 7 iron would have helped but he hit it bad. I was worried about him not taking putter but didn't cost us

Depends on the nature of the course really.

 

If it's on the short side, I'd go 19deg Hybrid, PW and putter.

 

If it's long I'd go 3w, 8i, putter.

Interesting that this thread came up. I was just playing around with blading a 52 yesterday.

 

Mini 14°, 7i, 52°.

 

How comes nobody ever does the mini?

I've never played in this type of scramble, but i'd say a few guys hit the nail on the head, just have to coordinate with teammates and play to strengths.

 

I have played in a 3 club individually on a 6500 yard track, went Driver, 52* wedge, putter and placed 2nd out of 16, and didn't shoot much off my normal score honestly, in my experience a lot of people were hindered by not carrying a putter. Also don't think driver is the right play for everyone, but at our course i am long enough to play driver, wedge on a large majority of the holes so i wanted to keep that advantage. Did make par 3's a little tricky though.

I think I would go with the following clubs regardless.

 

4iron - 200 yards full swing, punch outs. Partial swing/choking down on approaches.

 

50* wedge - 130 yards and in.

 

Putter

 

The only other option I would consider would be for courses with lots of forced carries. I'd have to spend some time putting with the hybrid though.

 

Hybrid - long game and putting

 

7 iron - approaches

 

58* wedge
