Byron Morgan Custom 006 Review

From Barsebäck GCC
I had the pleasure of playing two rounds at Barsebäck on friday and saturday. Played the Masters Course on friday (almost had a hole-in-one on the 4th hole :) ), and the Donald Steel course on saturday. This was a great opportunity to try out my new centershafted 006. Both courses were absolutely awesome, without a doubt the best courses I've ever played. The fairways were perfect, and the greens were fast and rolling really well, better than anything I've ever tried before. If you ever have a chance to play there, DO IT! And if any of you guys are members there...I'm always up for a round

Well, on to the putter. I played a centershafted putter a couple of years back, but only for a few rounds before I moved on. I wanted to try a centershafted putter again, so I had Byron Morgan make me a custom 006. Here are my thoughts on the putter after the 2 rounds.

Looks:

The putter is a real beauty, it really doesn't get any better than this. The face milling is just so cool, it's hard to stop looking at it. The putter itself is really clean, has some very nice lines, and is just all business. It's definitely a different feeling standing over a centershafted putter compared to a heel-shafted one, and it's going to take some time getting used to it. I really like the set-up though, and the square lines really helped me with alignment on Barsebäck's fast greens - this was something I was looking for when I decided to go with a centershafted putter, so I couldn't be happier with my choice.

Feel:

Before getting this Byron, I used to switch between a Scotty Cameron Newport Beach 1.5 and a TP Mills Softtail. Because the Byron is made in American Stainless Steel (yes, a** ;) ) and has a sound slot, the feel is definitely more similar to the Newport. It's still different though. It has a click at impact, but where the Newport can feel a little mushy at times, the Byron feels soft yet solid. The Mills has the same feeling, soft yet solid, but that feel is of course much more pronounced because it's carbon steel...and well, it's a Mills, known for it's solid and soft feel. I really like the feel of the Byron though, and it definitely lets you know where you hit it on the face. I had a tendency to hit it a little on the toe side because I had a little bit of trouble getting used to the new shaft position, and the head definitely let me know if I did that. It didn't feel bad, but it was very obvious where on the face you hit the ball...I really liked that.

Grip:

I've always played with rubber grips, my favorite being the Scotty Cameron Studio Design grip. For a while I've wanted to try a Gripmaster leather grip, especially the stitchback. So I had Byron put one of those on, and I'm really glad I did. It's bigger than the Studio Design, and not as soft, but it just feels really really good. When you first grab the putter, you'll notice the stiches on the back, but as soon as you stand over the ball, you'll forget about that. It has a pretty firm feel, definitely different from the rubber grips I've used before, but it feels really good in your hands. Now I know why so many people love their Gripmaster grips, it's just pure class.

Performance:

Well I guess this is really the most important part. A putter can be oh so pretty, but if it doesn't perform on the greens, who cares? Well this one definitely performs! The greens at Barsebäck are faster than the greens I'm used to, but the 006 performed really well right out of the gates. I definitely putted better on saturday, and holed some really nice putts, but friday also went better than I could have hoped for. I'm not that good of a putter IMO, but this has definitely made me better. I had no problems with the shorter putts, and I had a really good feeling standing over every putt, no matter how long they were. If I was on the green I had a feeling of "this one could go in" - something I haven't had in a long time, so that was a very nice change. The set-up is just really really confidence inspiring for me. I had brought the Cameron along on the trip, and had both putters in the bag for the first round (just in case :russian_roulette: )...the Cameron stayed in the bag during the whole round. On saturday I just left the Cameron in the car, it was just taking up space in the bag.

Overall:

The centershafted 006 is really all I wanted in a putter, so I just couldn't be happier. I really think it's going to be in the bag for a looong time. Big thanks to Byron Morgan for making me this putter, it was a real pleasure to work with him.

Great review, Michael :russian_roulette:

I knew you would like the Barsebäck courses - I don't think any course in Denmark best the Master Course and maybe not even the Donald Steel course. I will play up there in July/August - looking forward to it

How was the weather BTW ;) ...... :)

I sure did, I was extremely impressed with both courses. I can't wait to play there again.

The weather couldn't have been better actually. We tee'd off at 11 am on friday, I played in chinos and a polo and a short sleeved windbreaker, no need for anything else. It was a little windy on some holes, especially on the holes that run next to Öresund, but on some holes I was actually a little hot. On saturday it was supposed to pour down, but we didn't get a drop of water on us. It had rained most of the night though, but that didn't really do anything to the course. We tee'd off at 7:58 am, and it was a little cloudy but the sun was shining most of the time. After the round we decided to get something to drink, and as soon as we got into the restaurant, the rain just started pouring down...perfect timing ;)

Yup, we stayed at the hotel next to the course.
