Talk to me about the left knee's action in the swing

Hey all,

 

It's come to my attention (I've known it forever, really) that my pivot it a mess, and that a contributing factor (or symptom) might be my left knee collapsing toward my right during my backswing. Sometimes my heel might even comes up some. Whatever the case, this appears to be associated with an attempt to really turn my hips back and to shift pressure into my right side -- but, in reality, I think I'm getting all of my weight back on my right side, probably with some slide, and I inevitably end up hitting half my shot with at least some (often a lot) of my weight on my back foot. As a 6.2 right now, I still get around ok, but it's something I really want to correct..

 

Last night I experimented with what felt like a reduced hip turn (in reality, my pressure did shift -- but there was resistance with my upper body turn), and I also focused on not letting that left knee go toward my right. If anything, I made sure that it went out in front of me. In these cases, my hip turn felt more controlled, and I felt like I didn't have a lot of extra movement in my swing.

 

I know that plenty of folks "back in the day" let the left knee go directly to their right, and plenty did so such that their heel came up. And I know that Bubba does that currently. But instead of just observing who does what, I was hoping to learn more about why the left knee might move the way it does in the BS, and how it could be helpful and harmful. (It was interesting timing for me to read a post yesterday where Monte replied to the OP that his knee was going too much toward his right -- and then I had the same thing pointed out to me on the range last night.)

 

Please share the prevailing wisdom about how the left knee should (?) act in the back swing. Thanks in advance.
