How to get away from it all

So I packed up 2 flyrods and stuff, warm winter woollies and waders and headed down south into the tablelands for R & R and a bit of trout fishing. The cabins were located well off the beaten track, almost 4WD access. No internet, no TV, no phone - heaven.

As we drove up to our allotted accoms for the week, we passed one of the other cabins where the man of the house (or cabin) was hefting a wedge and hitting balls into the nearby paddock, not a good sign and even worse - he wasn't a fisherman. Next morning I went down to the river and got stuck into a 3.5kg rainbow, which after obligatory photos, went back in to scare the pants off future fishermen. Coming back from the river I ran into the cabin's owner Russell, who was hefting a 9 iron and complaining that he had work to do, cleaning, wood chopping etc, and also had a tee off time of 2:30pm at a golf course 80km away. Resigned to the fact that I was never going to escape golf (maybe at the top of Everest?) I took my #7 iron from the boot of the SUV and started hitting balls into the paddock.

I guess I'm just as bad, Nomad. I can recall going on a family vacation and hitting sand irons on the beach in the early morning hours along side the Madawaska River. There was a cool little nine hole course cut out of the bush about 20 minutes from our camping site in Barry's Bay.

We went there a couple of years in a row and I would play that course a couple of times over the course of the week we were there. Cheap and challenging. I would bring about 2 dozen balls with me and hope that I didn't run out!

My bride and I went golfing after the wedding ceremony in the morning that afternoon. It was a much better course played later that night. That was 17 yrs ago and she hasn't been to a golf course since but we still play the night course.

Driver also, it's a classic club. My course management is better though.

Driver also, it's a classic club. My course management is better though.

As you get older, you will find that course gets more and more difficult. you sometimes lose interest and forget what you are doing in the middle of a round and it may be a problem getting it in the hole.
