Grip is twisting, after air compressor install

I've used air before and the grips moved. You still have to place an underlayer of tape down so they are no faster, or maybe slower, to install than using regular tape and solvent. No thanks.

I've fixed the bulge/bubble on a couple putter grip removes by using heat. I don't use air to install, just remove. Maybe on a grip that has a few removes/installs, heat will bring it back to shape...

Old post but still relative to my case.  I started using compressed air to install grips and absolutely love how quick, clean, and easy it is.  I use one layer of blue painters tape and a smidge of GW's HFE just at the end of the shaft to aid in getting the grip started.  I'm careful not to use excessive pressure and overexpand the grips.

 

No twisting or movement on the MMC midsize aligns (4-AW ZX5's, PING Glide 2.0, or G400 3 and 5w) except for my driver which, after a handful of rounds, starts to twist/rotate.  I first just removed and reinstalled it but the same twisting happened.  I then swapped for another (same type) grip and it lasted a dozen or so rounds before I noticed some twist.  I'm thinking it's just the torque/torsion of the long stick finding the limits of this method of grip install... and my driver swing speed is only ~96 mph.

 

I'm wondering if there is another tape, perhaps something with a rougher texture, that might help?  I may also try adding a second layer of tape ti increase the interference fit... might just be enough?

 

If anyone has other tricks that work, love to hear them.

Standard length on the driver or shortened?

 

I'd add another layer of tape and try again.   I use regular brown masking tape from Ace Hardware and a little solvent at the grip opening.  I've never had one spin

I find two layers of blue painter's tape is better. The two layers are closer in diameter to one layer of double-sided tape.

 

There is no need to use grip solvent to install with air. I understand your reasoning, but the solvent may be degrading the blue painter's tape a little, contributing to the twisting. I don't know this for sure, just a possibility to consider.

 

Some grips will balloon more easily than others during air installation. I generally keep my pressure at 80 psi which seems to help, but some will still balloon.

 

My grip of choice is GP TV 360 midsize which only comes in the white/black color scheme. Those are very easy to install and I have no issue with ballooning. However, when I install a standard black GP TV midsize they will balloon easily. I'm not sure why, but the white ones seem to be a little thicker and go on much easier.

I’ve been installing with air for 5 years or so, I love the convenience and not having to use solvent.  Unfortunately, it seems like eventually they end up twisting no matter what I try.  I’m regripping this week with Lamkin Sonar, and am going the traditional double sided tape route.  I think going forward the only club I’m comfortable using air on is putter.  Glad some don’t experience any twisting, but I have using painters tape and low PSI

Try Star grips. Designed for air install, don't need any tape under them and will not move. When you go to blow them off, they are actually "stuck" to the shaft a little.
They're also really good grips, very durable, and cheaper than most. Very underrated.

Standard length and adding another layer of tape will be my next attempt to resolve.

I have been blowing on grips for around ten years now. I never had a problem with grips slipping using quality grips until this spring with my driver. I noticed the last three inches of the grip were misaligned with the rest of the grip. I reinstalled the grip and it twisted at the end again. I removed the grip and the grip on my LW and switched them. Neither of them have slipped since the change. Since the swap took care of my issue I felt the inside diameter was a little off on the one grip and with it being on the driver the torque made it slip a little. I usually use a layer or two of masking tape but I have used blue painters tape before.

Haven't seen any tour trucks blowing on grips for the pros.  I only use air for testing.

A little contact cement should help prevent twisting and still allow them to be blown off.
