North Atlanta golf membership

Wow, it's been a while since I visited my thread and a lot of great new info here. What has become clear is that traffic is the starting point in determining where we would like to live. I'll get in touch with a real estate agent once we get there, find the right spot and look for a close country club after that.

Luckily I have flexible office hours and can work some from home. I would love to live a bit more out of the city, have some space and peace with our home and great schools. But all the messages about traffic almost makes me reconsider that.

Once we have found our place I think I'll be looking for a club which is somewhere in between work and home. I'll be visiting some of the clubs here when I am around and make a decision afterwards.

With regards to initiation fee, clearly the "system" is different in the Netherlands as it is over in Atlanta. Initiation fees for most clubs have become a relic from the past. And monthly dues are close to $100 a month. That gives unlimited golf. Prices around Atlanta are quite a different matter but I guess the service you get in return is different as well.

thanks again for the great info!

You're very fortunate to have a flexible schedule. Atlanta is quite the grind if you work banker's hours.

St. Ives sounds like they have a great thing going and the it surprises me to hear the pricing is that reasonable. You have a few choices for how to get to Lenox from Johns Creek, too. Commute without traffic is probably no more than a half hour. I'm sure folks check the traffic report on the radio or their phones carefully before leaving the house and choosing 400 or 141.

Best of luck Jimi Thing!

I would say the best thing to do is find a good real estate agent that along with knowing the market and schools, knows the area country clubs. They will know using your criteria, which clubs best fit your needs and can show you homes near the clubs. I would think they also would be able to arrange for you to see the facilities and maybe get a round or two in to see which club is one you would enjoy joining.

We belong to Country Club of Roswell...great club, awesome people and fits your price criteria.

CCR has an initiation under 5k?

CCR is $4500 for full golf if your are over 40 and $3500 if you are under 40. There is a special opportunity right now to join for the next 10 full golf members where they will take $2000 off of that.

The problem is if you are over 40 the dues are almost 650 per month. Compared to other courses, amenities, and everything CCR is putting it's monthly dues not too far from the Standard Club and Cherokee. Yes I know both Cherokee and Standard are much higher initiation, Cherokee has a two year waiting list. However both 18's at Cherokee are better than CCR and roughly 50 bucks difference per month? Standard is about the same per month as Cherokee and has indoor tennis courts, and a much better course as well. CCR is just way off on their pricing. Settindown is only a little higher initiation and much cheaper per month for an amazing practice facility and a course that is much better than CCR, ATL National is cheaper and better as well.

I don't diaagree with anything in your post, but for us the low initiation fee was a huge deal. The other selling point to CCR was the complete lack of pretentiousness. The people (members and staff) are awesome and it is a very laid back, welcoming, social club. The pool/aquatic center kills it in the summer. Is it the nicest course in town? Of course not...but I dont have to wear a blazer to dinner and everyone is really friendly and welcoming. That is what sold it for us along with the awesome initiation fee deal...

Dear Golfwrx'rs

It is going to happen, Contract has been signed, E2 visa is applied. The plan is that we'll arrive in the area end of February next year. I think we will find a place to live in either Johns Creek, Suwanee or Alpharetta. Once we have settled in I'll go and find a suitable country club.

thanks very much for all the information shared here, it has been of great help.

As a member, I'm admittedly biased.......... that said, I would check out Berkeley Hills CC. 39 players under a 3 hdcp in this years club championship. Not an overly long course at 6800 yards max, but its well suited to players of all ages and abilities. Don't let the scorecard fool you though as it's a tough track. We were one of the first clubs in the area to put in Champion Bermuda greens and they regularly run 11-12 on the stimp.

11-12 is a lie!!! They play more like a 15 on the stimp!!!! Truly tough (but fair) greens. I am not a member and only had the chance to play it once but I love Berkeley Hills CC!!!!

Haha, yea, back in 2011 when the PGA Championship was being played at AAC and all the pros were complaining about the green speeds at 13 stimp.......... we played our Club Championship a week later and they were running 13.7 on day 1 and over 14 the other two days. It was stupid. That said, they don't run quite that quick anymore. I'd say the fastest they were this year was about 12.5.

Maybe I'll get lucky and get back out there to play them at 12.5. That should take my 3-putt number down quite a bit. LOL!

Reviving this topic. Visa is in, we are arriving in Atlanta the 25th of February. Its been an intense couple of weeks but we are moving to the US, could not be more excited. In the mean time we have been working with a real estate agent and it seems like we'll end up in East Cobb. Now besides Indian Hills and PineTree CC I noticed there were little to no clubs around there or am I missing something here?

Also would like your experience in negotiating a proper deal with a golf club. The initiation fee is on the low end, the monthly dues are a bit over what I want to afford for private golf. How would you go about negotiating a better deal. Simply ask for a better one without any reason or... I have no US experience when it comes to this.

thanks for your help!
