Paired With Randoms

This topic brings up another another dilemma that I often face as a single paired with strangers. I play probably 80-90% percent of my rounds as a single. A lot of times I try to get the first time by my lonesome so I can finish in under 3 hrs. That doesn't always work out so I do get paired with strangers quite frequently. My question is for those that play from the tips. Do you feel pressured to play from the White tees with your playing partners? I'm a decent player and at 45, I still hit the ball far enough to handle to tips. In fact, most courses in the area are shorter than 7000 yards from the tips. From the White tees I say the average length is probably in the low 6000s. I typically stick to my guns and play the tees that I want. It seems rare, even among the young flat bellies to be paired up with anyone that plays all the way back.

interesting wrinkle, yeah...

now that I think about it, if I am paired or join a twosome or threesome, I tend to immediately offer to go last and see where they hit from. I use a golf app on my phone for GPS and scoring, so if they go to the whites, I'll key that into the app. I have no problem playing either, but if they ask or state they split their tees, I usually go with the odd man out...

to answer your question, I tend to go where they go. the game is still a challenge even if yer averaging less 20 yards a hole to start,

I'd say play where you want if you were randomly paired up, but , for me, when I get paired up with people playing the whites I have no problem joining them. IMO one of the best things you can do for your game is play "up" once a week and just try to go as low as you can. I'll literally play any set of tees and just adjust my expectations, if it's the whites I know I should break 70. Making birdies is fun :D also logistically, teeing off is a little easier too.

As a golfer who plays from the white tees it would only bother me when a golfer plays from the back tees and does not really play well enough to be back there. I see this often times enough people playing the back tees when they should be playing the white tees. Hey if you have the game for the back tees that is just fine with me!

As I finish the end of my first year, I play from the whites. I have played from the front tees and even had times where I tried the back tees with groups.

I just get more enjoyment shooting from the whites. It keeps the game challenging while allowing me to progress towards the back tees in years to come.

Most times I get to the green areas within regulation, but courses over 6500 become a challenge for me.

It just seems like some groups choose to play from the back tees to extend the length of the game rather than considering their level of skill.

Either way is fine for me, just be aware of the pace of play. Pace of play is always in my mindset along with everything else. Josh

Don't really want to turn this into a front tee back tee debate. Obviously you shouldn't play the tips if if severely effects pace of play. I was down to a 7 the last time I kept a handicap. Probably slightly better now, just need to get the short game going to shave off a little more.

I got paired with two older gentlemen two weeks ago. One of the most enjoyable rounds I have played in a long time. Seems most of my old golf buddies have either moved away or quit the game all together. This brings up another question. What are ways that those that do not belong to a private club have found new regular golfing partners?

It's hard to find golf partners that want lasting golf relationships. Maybe join a 9-hole league or something where you are forced to see people on a weekly basis and then golf friendships can break out from that. Oddly enough events that are not golf-related can sometimes present opportunities through casual conversation. Hope you find someone.

Well, I totaled my car a few days ago swerving to avoid hitting a wild dog, and the guy who came to my aid and was my chief witness was on his way to a tournament (as I also was on my way to play a two round club tourney as well...)

we exchanged numbers and he wants to host me at a very elite club he's a member at here...

so, answer? wreck yer car beyond fantastical belief.

Ask the pro behind the counter at the local municipal course. If you are posting your scores, he'll have a rough idea which group you would fit in with for playing. I did this a couple years ago and have been rewarded several times over now with introductions into multiple groups with standing tee times. You just have to be pleasant and get around the course without to much drama or quirky behavior.

I've never had an issue with tee box selection. The reason why is that I'm comfortable playing from all of them. So, I just go with the flow and play from whatever set the others are playing from.

Occasionally, I have played forward or back one set from the rest of the group, but that is the exception and usually only happens if the group is playing from 6800+ or 5800- and I'm feeling good or bad about my game that day.

I only rarely run into a group that plays from 6800+. 6600 seems to about the maximum for most and that is only for the guys with some distance off the tee. I suspect tees in the 6000-6400 yd range are the most popular.

So now I'm the rando stranger paired up with ALL KINDSA PEOPLE... sex-pats, rich nationalists, fellow vacationers, a lot of Aussies.

If you are a random stranger joining a threesome for an afternoon, I think you should expect a few sex-pats.

or others expect me to be the sexpat...

The sexpats I do know start talking up bar fining girls and I had to ask what that was... I play in an area of the Philippines NOTORIOUS for the sex trade, and when I meet these guys there, they assume I'm retired (as well, just like them)... It's hard to convince them that I'm there just for the golf.

I've only had the opportunity to play Mimosa in Angeles. This was back in 99'ish, that was one of the nicest courses I've ever played. My Dad retired, re-married and lived out there until he passed. I used to visit once a month through HS to get my braces adjusted as my dentist was there. I don't live too far away, 2-3 hours by plane. Looking forward to playing some golf out there next year hopefully!

that's the place...

there's four really decent courses all within 20 sq. km there, in Clark, Pampanga. And Angeles, back in the early 90s was the Red Light District of the entire South Pacific. It's better now, cleaner and with a lot more industry... but the sexpats still find their vice well tended to...

Yeah I haven't been there since 2003 I think, it's been so long. Glad it's cleaned up, it was still a little 'rough' then. And sexpats will always find a way ;)

Nothing makes a statement like a birdie / birdie start. My last big tournament I started the practice round with two birds and my partners were exactly like that... stand-offish to "hey, do you know so and so." Eventually I told them, "I'm not that good, just a lucky start." And of course the wheels came off. That should be the goal every round, start birdie / birdie.

The last time I didn't play with my regular group and walked on, I got paired with 2 randoms. I could tell on the 1st tee box one of the randoms was a psycho. He was already spitting fumes by the 2nd hole because he was convinced the group in front of us was playing too slow. The other random and I tried to explain that they really weren't, but he would have none of it. By the 4th hole and with his furor continuing to boil, he yelled at the group. Two guys in 1 of the cart came back to ask him what the problem was. He immediately reached in his bag, pulled out a knife. No more random golf for me.

Side note: I've played with randoms many times over the years. That was the first and only psycho.

paired with a trio of Korean tourists this last time out, so I put the situation to good use and asked them -- through the language barrier, over several holes -- where the best Korean BBQ place was here, on this 'new' island place where I am working for the next 8 months...

they invited me out after the round, and we had a great time, at this new AMAZING KBBQ place...

we were all hacks anyway which made the drinking later all the more fun.

I don't mind being paired up with randoms for the most part. I just can't stand being paired up with really awful players who decide to play every shot and don't pick up at some point.

I also get a little pissy when I go to the course and it's wide open and I'm really hoping to go off as a single (better focus for me and lightning fast round) and they end up pairing me up with somebody or 3some
