Does putter ball position effect address aim

Curious if anyone has come across a case where we have average aiming tendencies if the ball is played too forward in stance, back of front, front of middle, and middle of stance.

 

Finding we have a minor closed face at address bias with ball played forward. Curious if ball position moving forward and back how that would effect it. Anyone study that?

 

Also curious if anyone study if the ball is below the eyes, outside the eyes, or inside the eyes for right eye dominant putter if that had any effect on address aim.

Had time today for a short test. Left hand low and right hand is the aim hand. I take my right hand position first then step into the ball then align with right hand then place left hand on the grip once aligned. When ball position is more forward with the right hand aiming the tendency is for the face to close a little until I counter it with aim adjustment. As I move the ball more centered or half a ball in front of center the face is more square to start.

If you assume that your stroke has some arc, then the earlier you contact the ball further back in your stance the more likely you are to push it and the later, more forward the ball is at address, pull it.

 

As far as where your dominant eye is in relation to the ball, I wouldn't say that necessarily directly correlate to the position the ball is in your stance.

 

Drop a ball from your dominant eye and see. The conventional wisdom is that it should be over the ball or slightly inside the ball, but not outside.

 

I think there's typically some trial and error for where we each see the closest to the "true" line when above the ball. Good luck.

I am a right handed putter and right eye dominant. Perhaps by moving the ball more toward center it is closer to my dominant eye.

 

I am learning more about dominant eye and I am starting to believe it does have an impact on aiming along with putter squareness at address. I use a line on my ball. I did a test from 10 feet from the target with one set of balls aiming the line with both eyes and another set aiming with only my dominant eye open. With the dominant only eye the view is smaller and need to get used to but the first few tests I did it seems like the line is more accurate more often. I never really heard of anyone aiming the line with just their dominant eye but other aiming activities like aiming an arrow or gun I think they use one eye.

Yes, righty that's right eye dominant usually benefits from ball in the center of stance.

A little forward then centered. Hit it slightly on the up. But I'm straight back, straight forward guy.

I play it little back from center on the fringe so it hops up/skids a little on top of the fringe then once on the green it rolls straight.

I tend to aim left, get shoulders open if I play it too forward.

Great vid. That's what I've recently started doing without realizing it. My eyes are now inside the target line. This helped me understand why I started seeing the line better. Cheers.

Ball position in your stance affects (or effects, never quite sure which to use) putting, iron, and driver play. Having a repeatable setup is very important and makes a checklist of ball position, stance, etc, more easily detectable of change and correction.

 

Example is that if my ball position gets to far forward in my iron play I start a severe draw, if I correct that and move the ball back and inch or so the ball curvature is less pronounced. I assume that the position while putting would also be changed.

just got my laser and mirror for putter. looking forward to testing different ball positions and eye positions and if they improve my aim at address.
