Taylormade UDI question ...

BenjiHogan

Recommended Posts

I have Adams CMB Irons in play, but Im considering buying a udi to replace the 4 iron. I Hit the CMB 4 iron pretty good, but on a mishit it loses considerable yardage - not ideal if I'm teeing off with the 4 iron on a short par 4 for "safety" :fie:

My question is if the udi will offer a substantial amount more forgiveness over my current 4 iron? I have never had a udi in my hands so I'm not sure if its any smaller heel to toe, sole width etc.

Opinions? Thanks.

The UDI's are nice forgiving long irons that will launch the ball higher than a traditional long iron. I would also look at the Taylormade CB 2014 long irons. In my experience the CB irons are hotter than the UDI's. Ive played both for a considerable time and the CB's beat out the UDI. However the CB will have a lower flight than the UDI it just depends on the trajectory you are looking for.

I play the CMBs with the addition of a Titleist 712u 3 iron. The 712 suited my needs a bit better than the Udi. However; in my mind the UDI most likely will add a bit more confidence over the ball. Its blade is quite a bit longer then the CMB. It's also a bit more forgiving when struck at the toe if I remember correctly.

Cheers ... yeah its heel to toe that was my primary concern. I had a dhy in play for a few months & honestly it had such a small blade length I didn't have confidence in it.

Even the 1 iron is pretty easy to hit. I just can't find a consistent spot for it in the bag.

Carry the UDI 4 iron myself. If you're worried about it being too small don't be. Its borderline too big, but it looks really nice so I can play it. It performs great. Definitely hotter and more forgiving than a traditional 4 iron (I play MP-5s). Feel isn't as good as my irons but thats the sacrifice for a club that carries like it does. It can also be flighted down nicely, unlike a hybrid.

Loved this club, but had the same problem. I played it for 1 season instead of a three wood. Gave up a little with that setup. I actually sold it, and it is one club that I do regret giving up. Such a fun, great feeling, high performing club.

I have three of them, i use them to replace my 4 and 5 iron's. They are super forgiving, now they will not take any pass at them and make it fly long and straight. You need to make a decent pass to get the forgiveness.

Ugh when I tried the UDI 4 on GC2 I lost 10 yards due to it launching so high. Same loft and shaft as my 4 iron

Surprised to hear you say this. Bet you had a dud of a shaft in it, or balance was off or something. I can hit this thing into the wind and not even make adjustments and it won't balloon.

I went to the store yesterday just to try it again after reading this thread. They had one with PX 6.5 in it. Consistently 10 yards shorter than my own 4 iron

LOVE MY UDI I had one with a C-Taper and it was terrible. Got one with a Recoil 125, wrong flex but wanted to try it anyway. Really good, just a little loose. Picked up a Hzrdus for it, has become my safety blanket for tight tee shots. It's the 2 iron, and have even kicked around the idea of picking up a 4 and 5 because it's that solid of a club.

I was going to recommend the dhy until I read this. Kind of surprised you feel that way, I game mine with XTD Forged, came from CMBs previously and feel there isn't much difference between the two and have never felt the dhy was too small.

Its strange .. to my eye the bulge & roll on the face of the DHY just makes the hitting area look tiny. I wanted to love it but just couldn't, my 4 iron was a lot easier to hit for some reason.

It certainly can have a funky look to it, I certainly didn't like it at first, but once I hit it, it firmly had a place in my bag. Different strokes.

I have a UDI 3 iron, but really want a 2 iron. Why are they so expensive compared to the 3 irons? I got a TP RSI 20* for $75 new. The 2 irons are all at least double that.

Right when Golfsmith announced the BK, my local store had 3 of them. Each selling for $89.99 and $20 off. I should have grabbed all 3 and shared with wrx.

Try to find a 1 iron. I have seen them going for $200 on the bay.

Saw one on ebay FS at $500 once. Ridiculous. I have the 2 iron myself, its a keeper because its so easy to hit even with the stock C-Taper lite shaft.

$500 is stupid. I have had 2 UDI 2 irons and I had a 1 iron just to try it. I saw no benefit to the 1 iron over my 2. Almost identical results. Figure the 2 is easier for me off the tee so kept it. Plus I put money into the Hzrdus combo so was just going to ride with what it is. Considering selling it now as I am a Ho and always like trying new things and have a few items on my radar. Hitting the Hybrid pretty well as of late and considering bagging the 909H with the Speeder 904 HB. I hit it just as well off the tee and better off the deck than the UDI. Don't know if I can bring myself to let the UDI go but in order to continue ho'ing, I must feed the PayPal machine.
