Not much hype for the 2017 TaylorMade M2 drivers or fairways

Recommended Posts

My only comment thus far on these woods is this...

I really wish they would make an adjustable M2 fairway. That way I could buy the HL version and adjust it 2 degrees down to have an open face. I like to be able to hit a cut with the 3 wood as well as a soft draw, and having an open face really helps in this regard. I would just get the M1, but I really don't need the sliding weight and the feel is just not the same.

I think it's just a function of timing. The products were announced at the beginning of a pretty big lull in the golf calendar, there's no golf on tour where we can see pros playing the new gear, the pre-order window is still a couple of weeks away, and the product won't be in stock at retailers for another month. It's hard to build much hype when only a few reviewers have the product in their hands.

From what I've seen/read the 2017 M2 is kind of a re-skinned Taylormade version of a PING G LS or Cobra F6 which I like because that archetype has been good for me.

I'm pretty sure it will offer no performance gains over my PING, but I do prefer the look of the M2. If it sounds and feels good to me, I'd switch. I am looking forward to trying it out.

Once the PGA Tour gets up and running again on a consistent schedule you will see more hype. Honeymoon phase of the "jail break" tech needs to die down and then you will see the hype. I do think the M1 may be what the guys on tour use more this year for driver.

Has there been a time in the last 5-6 years where Callaway have dominated the driver market the way TM has?

No hence my point. The Callaway reference was referring to the GolfWRX community.

Just based on the reviews I've seen so far, it really doesn't offer anything new. Most people seem to think the new ones look a lot gaudier than the 2016 versions, and the new sound, while subjective, doesn't seem well-received.

You also see videos like Shiels doing his drive-offs and other head-to-head comparisons, and it just seems apparent that there's nothing new there.

Honestly, the 2016 M2 is a terrific driver, and I've never been more inclined to think that a company likely won't be able to outdo themselves.

wait...every new TM driver outdoes the former by 16+ yards.

Why hype the 2017 M2 when the M3 might be released the week after? Right now there is no revolutionary game changing conforming club from one cycle year to the next. Play what you like and what you hit well. If you like a club and want a new driver fairly frequently than get it.... just temper expectations and have fun playing.

M2 both years is a beautiful looking driver at address. What I don't like is how cheap the white paint is on the top front line along the face( at least on the current m2) 9 out of 10 demo's are chipped. If I bought one and it chipped it my sole focus and sight line would go to that mark. If the 2017 fixed that I'd be happier than gaining 4 yards.

Taylormade was smart to differentiate the M1 and M2 more in 2017. The 2016's were so ridiculously close in performance it was silly. Why would you pay $100 more for essentially the same performing driver.

It makes sense to make the M2 louder and spinnier considering the target golfer. Plus some nice little tweaks to the M1 that will make the better players who played M2 last year spend more money this year on the premium M1.

Taylormade knows what they're doing.

This makes a ton of sense to me. The 2016 M2 was too good considering the price point relative to the M1

There is an 80% chance grip it and rip it uses iron covers

Haha no iron covers just a small pet peeve in regards to the finish on that driver. I need all the help I can get. When I shank a drive and chip the face somewhere off center it isn't going to prove to be an effective alignment aid. Sorry I'm one of the few humans on here with swing speed slower than the speed of sound without 300 yard carry. I also like sight lines on my putter....crazy

Simply improving the current line, it will be a big improvement coming from the aero burner or sldr line but prob not enough to switch from the current.. that's their ide

I don't get the sldr hate. For me it was the best driver since the 510 df proto .

Agreed, but SLDR had a tendency for the low-left. Taylormade obviously listened to the feedback because the 2016 M family tended to go high-right. Could they have finally found neutral with the 2017 M family?

The buzz around M2 for Taylormade was no doubt great...but maybe hurt M1 sales, which considering was $100 more, it was not ideal (in a perfect world, M1 would've dominated). The M1/M2 family this time around seem more in line with the more expensive product being the superior product. With 2016, this just wasn't the case. M2 was King. Conscious effort by TM?

I'd for sure agree with this. I was playing the M2, but now I'm looking to switch to the m1 because it sounds like it's objectively going to be the better club.

Ive gamed both and I've found the M2 to find more fairways while the M1 (440) tends to be better sounding and feeling but a little bit wilder, i won't have a final say until i get a few more M1s in.....the one i had was 8.7 which was a bit too low ( and i dont have much luck in using adapters to mimic static loft changes ). The M2 i have is perfect at 10.2 and the 440cc i have on the way is 11.2 and 9.5. Ive only employed a few shafts but the clear winner in the shaft category is the Tensei Orange V2 and the Tensei white.

Disagree on your Aeroburner comment, IMO The ABTP line holds up to the M2 just fine. Especially in the 3 wood area, zero difference for me.

I agree the tp aeroburner fairways are fantastic. The tour issued yardbirds are even better just rockets and easy to hit.

well, I didn't think it'd happen but it did. I don't have all the numbers (I'm sorry I'm sorry, please don't stone me) -- but I got fitted last night into a 2017 M2 w/ HZRDUS yellow 65X OR my current gamer shaft - Kuro Kage XT 60TX (both gave almost identical numbers, really just personal preference and had to pick an additional shaft to go into the head since the kuro was out of my other driver).

I hit the epic, epic SZ, '17 460 M1 and 440 --

best feeling head in this order:

Epic

M2

440 M1

460 M1

Epic SZ

best performing in this order:

M2

460 M1 (not by much but got better feel out of the m2 - for me)

Epic (really, REALLY wanted to like this driver b/c it felt so good, but the dispersion was a bit much for me, as was the spin)

440 M1 (didn't spin ENOUGH -- lots of knuckleballs)

Epic SZ (head just felt dead to me and heavy. ended up counting it out after roughly 10 swings)

**I asked him after I was fit for this years to hit it against last years, same shaft. the new one was marginally better than last years but not by much. personally I think it felt a touch better. could've honestly went with either the 2016 or the 2017 but, I figured go with the newer one b/c the HZRDUS wasn't an upcharge and because new.

Regarding the M2 fairways. 3w. Hit the 16 and 17 versions. 17 has a bigger footprint, which I was interested in. But ended up preferring the 16 model - by the ball it just suited my eye better. Found no real performance difference in the two. Went with the 2016 M2 3w. Having a black tie installed. Im sure for some the new stuff will perform better.

The 2016 M2 driver was best for me compared to everything else I hit - until the Cobra LTD was hit. the Cobra kicked its butt. But the M2 3w beat the Cobra 3w.

I agree. It seems to me that they made the M1 so much better this year that it outshines the M2.

Some guy named Tiger was raving about his new M2 3-wood. Not sure if his opinion counts though... ;)

lol it counts -- if you swing like tiger or came from nike products?

it's an incredibly solid fairway - not taking anything away from it.
