Advice on moving from California to Dallas

Lots of these initiation fees listed above are full sticker. Most have young exec where you pay 25%-50% of full sticker then catch up as you turn 40 or 45.

 

I'm a YEX at a Club Corp in Dallas and enjoy it. However, if you made me pick a club within reason price wise and i lived nearby... I'd go with either Gleneagles (Club Corp), Stonebriar (solid), or the Sports Club (Four Seasons). All have 2 courses, great facilities, pools, tennis, etc...

 

I'm a member at a one course club and it is at times hard to get a tee time on peak hours and i've heard that around town since there are so many golfing days and people.

The initiation fees private/equity clubs (DCC, Brookhollow, Preston Trail, Royal Oaks, Northwood, Dallas National, etc.) are accurate. The Club Corp courses will have junior memberships that are heavily discounted, yes. You can make a deal with fully private clubs, but the ones that are making deals need members (are new or not as strong financially).

Agreed, should have clarified. Young exec and junior memberships are different... junior memberships you catch up as you get older. YEX are typically just Club Corp and you pay less initiation and dues increase as you get past age benchmarks

Don't sleep on tarrant county. Ft Worth is a gem and a complete different feel than Dallas

 

Mira Vista CC in ft Worth is a diamond too.

Tarrant Co./Ft Worth is a good point, but I think the original poster indicated he'd live/work more in Dallas/Plano, so FTW may be too far. Much better value on top end clubs than in Dallas.

Check out stonebridge ranch in McKinney. Great neighborhood and schools. The ranch has 27 holes and a great membership and very active. The yex is available there or you can do the dual membership and add the dye course down the street. It's one of the better clubcorp courses in the Dallas area but doesn't offer the yex. Message me if you have any questions, I've been out there a couple of years and love it.

IMO the weather in Dallas is solid. I used to live up north where I couldn't play golf 6 months a year. Also have lived out in N Carolina which is the east coast version of Cali, and I'll admit, that's almost impossible to beat, but the heat isn't that bad, the humidity isn't that bad, you can play 12 months a year, it's 80 degrees out today in February. Yeah, it gets hot, you play early when it gets hot. Done by 10 or 11 AM. The two things you will find is that it can be windy here and the bugs can be a son of a gun but I'll give the weather an 8/10 (Hawaii being a 10, Socal a 9.5, Carolinas an 8.5, Dallas an 8).

 

The areas of town you have to choose from in Dallas are really the Lakewood / White Rock area of East Dallas and Park Cities/(University/Highland) and Preston Hollow. You can also look at the Lake Highlands area. School-district wise there are a handful of I would say 3-4 elementary schools in all of DISD you would consider. Lakewood, White Rock, and a couple of the Lake Highlands ones. M streets area has a good one also that I am aware of. Other than that you are private schooling your kids. If you go the park cities route you are paying a premium but you won't have to private school that way. The next most popular decision would be some of the north Dallas suburbs. Good schools in many of these suburbs. If you are in East Dallas your choice for a club should probably be DAC, both of the courses are outstanding, two excellent 18s, great condition, the initiation is just under 20K right now. Lakewood is also nearby but is a parkland style course with an initiation of 80K.

 

The best places for north Dallas burb clubs that I have any experience with are Stonebriar Gleneagles and Brookhaven (all CC). All nice courses probably edge to Stonebriar. If you play tennis BH is a big tennis club as well, maybe moreso than with golf. 3 courses there but really 2 good courses and one short/beginner type of course. I do prefer DAC quite a bit to all of these though.

 

Park Cities area has DCC, which is 100K+ and impossible to join without connections, another landlocked parkland course. Never played there but driven by many times.

Sorry, but I got to say Brookhaven is not even close in the running if you are comparing to Stonebriar and Gleneagles like said above...especially if you are comparing the neighborhoods....

Moved from SF Bay Area to Huntsville, AL for a while for 2 yrs for work. Then moved back. There are only 4 weeks of CA quality weather...2 wks in the spring and 2 wks in the fall. You pay alot in CA, but you get what you pay for.

From what I understand, Zeverson is right. Went up to $80K and there is now a list at Lakewood. It has a very nice clubhouse, pool, and course. Course is pretty hard.

This is still on my radar, if I get a job offer that I can't turn down, Dallas in very high on my list to move to.

Every part of the country has its pros and cons. If the move didn't "feel" right it probably wasn't.........as future opportunities come up you'll know.
