2017 TaylorMade M1 440 in play

Recommended Posts

I have had the new TM M1 440 in play for over a week now and I have been able to work it against the '15 M1 430 and the '16 M2 460.

The past two clubs were real favorites. I ended up playing the M2 last year more because of the feel and consistency. I carried it further although the M1 did provide more roll. Over all distances were pretty similar and the feel of the M2 was great.

Now with the '17 M1, what have I found? The shaft choices were many (none of these are with stock shafts, thus I can't comment on them as I don't have them) . I originally heard that the adjustable tip would be different. Maybe so when the clubs come to market but mine came with the same that I have been using on the previous heads. So good for me because I have something like 8 or 9 different options in house. Feel is not just in the head, as different shafts have different feel even within one company. The 17 M1 with several shafts felt better than the '15 M1, but not as good as the M2 for the most part as you can feel slight misses more with the new M1. There were 2-3 shafts that I found were good with different adjustments for each (*note this*). When I put my M2 shaft into the new M1, I found better feel and greater performance. In several rounds of side by side (flipping the shafts back and forth), I have come away very excited with the new M1. I appear to be able to carry it about the same as the M2 but with a little more roll. So I have been to see a consistent 5-10 more yards, but on occasion (20%) I get a real jumper that is substantially longer. My control has been very good, in fact excellent!

Now let me point out that my M2 is a 10.5* set to 9.5 (opening up the face). In the '17 M1 I received a 9.5* and set it to 10.5* (Slightly adding draw). So my trajectories are the same now. So be aware that the M2 with a higher MOI has a higher trajectory than either of the M1s in the same settings. I think that these on-line testers (most from the England) may not be making equal tests for comparisons. By the way my 17 M1 is set more for low spin.

As in all club choices make sure you do thorough testing and get properly fit.

I'm interested in the same 2017 440 vs 2016 M2, awesome if you can post a crown/address pic of both showing the 440's footprint.

I'd love to see comparison between the 3 heads, 2016 M1 430, 460, and 2017 M1 440.

Call me crazy but after looking at these for the last hour, I much prefer the head shape the 440 compared to the 460. To me the 440 looks similar to the M2 DF fairway woods.

I was tied up all day, I will try to get a side by side on Thursday. it is tricky because the camera point of view really only gets one club correctly while the others can appear slightly askew. I will see what I can do.

It's like the club on the left always looked super closed. I noticed this when trying to get comprisoon pics of my SLDR 430 ad 917 D3. Maybe 2 pics then? One with 440 on the left, and one with the 430 on the left? If you get a chance that to that is.

Agree. I'm interested in seeing if the 440 is more pear shaped. I didn't like last year's shape of the 430. And the only other option is epic gbb

I like the slight angle change on the White top part but I have never really liked green on a golf club.

I also prefer a smaller head size like the M1 430, XR16 SZ or Superdeep so not sure how much I will get on with the new M series or Epic heads.

As ever, performance has a habit of changing minds;-)

Was recently fit on Trackman for the 2016 M2. We had to take a 9.5* head and turn it down to 8* or so. I have a +2-+3 AoA and fight a push with too much spin. The fitter told me I may want to wait on the new 440 as its supposedly as forgiving as the 2016 club, will help with my right miss and definitely get the spin down. Even so, he said optimally I would want to loft up again with these M1 440s to the 10.5* and back it down from there. He is a Taylormade fitter and he was told they definitely want people in higher lofts with the 440 because it kills spin more than any other driver. I am looking forward to hearing more comments from you on the forgiveness, launch and spin as compared to the M2.

Attaching comparative photos is not easy to get the proper perspective to compare as I thought. Here are some but shadows don't help. I will say this while I liked each one individually when in play. I do like the shape and look of the latest (M1 '17, 440) the best. Played at Silverado in Napa this afternoon and I must say I hit it very well in the cold and very soft conditions (cleaning mud off of every shot).

Maybe I can shoot them individually with proper perspective but it will be better in the sunlight probably.

440 is definitely lower spin than 460 m1 or m2 from last year. Launch angle isn't really any lower, but spin is lower for sure. I'll be doing a full review soon.

Awesome!!!!

Thanks for taking the time to do this. I'm sure many are thankful like me.

If you do decide to take individual pics outside, can I suggest doing it with a ball as a reference point. It's always nice to see clubs from address position but personally I think when a ball is shown in the pic it gives more perspective on size and shape.

Honestly I thought from the pics I had seen that the 2016 was a better looking club.....but man, I don't know anymore? Plus with Tollbros post above mine about the 2017 440 being lower spin than the 2016 M1 460 has thrown a rench in my thoughts on what to get. I was poitive I ws going to pick up a a 2016 M1 430 off fleabay, but now I'm going to wait and see what the reiews of the 440's (it sucks we only get M1 460's, M2, GBB, drivers at our DSG, they NEVER, EVER get the 430/440, Alpha, Sub Zero, TP models, you know the "player category" drivers. Just the 460 game improvement models of certain clubs, no Titleist at all, no PING, we have sorriest DSG store in existence, literally 3 driver driver racks one with TM M1 460, and M2 9.5,10.5, one with like 4 Cally GBB only, and a couple F6, heads, this place is completely bare). That's why I love reading these types of threads, Because I'm sure there's alot of members that live in podunk towns like mine with awful offerings, who rely on these types of threads as a starting point on what to try.

The last pic is 430, 440, 460 correct? I didn't think the new shape of the white crown would mke difference visually, but it does look better IMHO.

Really looking forward to your thoughts.

Lastly did you play the SLDR 430 at all? If so how's it compare the 2016/2017 M1 430/460 440?

Good Questions. The last pic is that from left to right as you list them. As much as liked the previous two, I like the new guy even more visually, surprised myself (don't get me wrong, I could still play the older models but I kinda like having them as back ups). On the SLDR it was my top performing previous driver to this set. The R15 was not a favorite performance wise, never stood up to the SLDR 430. The smaller heads have always suited me better on the new generation drivers over the past 5-6 yrs. I loved the R11 430, didn't like the R11S at all. I thought the R1 (smaller Tour head, don't remember the cc's) was a very good concept and it performed well although the disc was so-so making it more difficult to hit off of the deck. The M2 '16 is the only 460 head that has been good for me. But that said that is for me and my game. I still have all of them.

I think it is good to note that the feel of the new M1 is better than the original, more similar to the M2 which is as good as it gets and a reason so many tour players hav been able to switch over from other companies clubs.

The spin level at worst is similar to its predecessors, and on some perfectly struck shots it is clearly lower. As I had said earlier there are some extreme long shots with the new club and the accuracy for the '17 is superior to the '15 M1 and more workable than the M2 (which doesn't have many strays). I am excited to play every day! I didn't have my A game today through the bag but my the driver was good all day.

So tough to judge from the pics but really appreciate you taking the time to post for the benefit of the rest of us. I will have to evaluate in person. I have historically been an 8.5 guy. Even with the sldr 430. Hitting last year's 430 has changed my approach and I'm now going to look at 10.5 and dialing it down from there. Too little spin at 8.5.

Do we know what the new shaft options are at no upcharge?

Personally I don't know the shaft options, I just receive the head as I have numerous shaft options that I have a history with and some new stuff coming from Fujikura to test. So I am no help onths but I would think they should be posted one website by now in their custom dept.

Thanks! Very well thought write up.

You've got your lofts wrong. If your 10.5 is 2 notches down, it's is 9*. If your 9.5 is 2 notches up, it is 11*.

Well I should have been more clear. I am using TP tips from the Tour Dept which have an adjustability of only 1.5* each way and not the 2.0 tips. Each notch on these is 0.5* loft adjustment. So the lofts I was stating are basically correct. But please note not every head is measured exactly correct as the labeled lofts. My heads are measured, marked and also each tested for COR which you can tell if you look closely at the face because there is a slight mark left afterwards in the center of the clubface.

So tough to judge from the pics but really appreciate you taking the time to post for the benefit of the rest of us. I will have to evaluate in person. I have historically been an 8.5 guy. Do we know what the new shaft options are at no upcharge?

I have the shaft list but the file is too big to attach for some reason.

What's the difference between the the "Tour Adapter" vs the stock M1 style adapter? From your post I'm guessing the obvious answer is Tour Tip is 3* +/- 1.5* (3* total), and M1 stock is +/- 2* (4* total). Is the Tour Tip aluminum instead of plastic?

From what I've read the 2017 M1/M2 adapter is aluminum to help with easy removing, and helps from not getting messed up from the heat while removing it from a shaft (I don't do my I own club work so not sure how much of a problem that truely is I suppose).

Curious to hear the differences. I just picked up a TI M1 430 tonight that I believe has the stock the M1 adapter. Curious what the Tour Adapter vs. older M1 adapter vs new 2017 adapter offers.

Mcoz- any further updates with how the 440 is performing? Still really liking it, any changes in the setup, or shafts?

I have seen that the new 17s have a new adapter but mine came with the older 3* TP version that I have had in previous models. My clubs come from TaylorMade without shafts but with the adapters. My shafts almost always come from Fujikura. I do test others but Fujis seem to work with me. I have never used a non TP adapter. I continue to be impressed with the new 17 M1. But the weather here has kept me from using it the past three days.

You can find the shaft up charge/no up charge options here at https://taylormadegolf.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-tmag-custom-catalog-us/default/v1471767655288/pdf/Custom_Shafts.pdf

Take note PGA show is the week of their release date, 1/23-1/27, so these options may change. Hope this helps, it sure helped me decide what I am ordering the 27th of this month!

Can't imagine that list is accurate. It doesn't even have the stock shaft offerings on it?

Nothing is safe in my bag!
