Benefits of switching out set PW for a blade wedge?

mooks3113

Hey all,

I game a set of Cg7 tours, which by definition are a cavity back players iron. Just wanted to see if anyone sees any advantages to switching out the traditional PW for a "blade style" ( I.e. Cleveland 588 rtx) in the same loft. Just curious as inseenalot of people with that setup and I was considering it for winter tinkering purposes.

Thanks in advance for any input.

And sorry if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find the topic in a search.

How often do you make less than a full swing with a pw, and how many wedges do you carry?

I'd say most of the time I'm a 1/2 to 3/4 swing with my PW. And carry a setup of two wedges 52 and 58

So, I think the more your pw plays into your short game, the more you might benefit from a blade wedge. If it's just a 10iron, keep your set pw.

I switched from the stock PW to a matching wedge because I was not a fan of a 45* PW. I didn't want to bend it, so I opted for 48* wedge and it has worked out very well as my wedge gaps are 6* anyway and my 9 iron is 42*.

I like this line of thinking. For the same reason I often wonder if I should get a U wedge instead of 50/52* forged

For me, the PW is my go to club for all running shots around the green from 0-10ish yards off. I play it much like a strong, short stroked putter motion, so feel is paramount. When I had my G25s I had to switch that shovel out for a smaller i20. I still hit plenty of full shots with it too, so I still wanted that forgiveness as well.

It's a balancing act, and my suggestion is to at least go to a players iron for your PW. A blade isn't always necessary unless you are knocking shots within ten feet from 0-100 yards, or you are close to scratch and NEED that extra feel.

I play G20s 4-PW and opted for the i20 UW for the same reason. Versatility but still had that forgiveness for full shots.

I think PW is so important I carry two!

Ala Jason Day, I have my set PW bent strong for slightly lower flight + more yardage. Then a Vokey 48 that I can use for more tucked pins / or when spin is needed. I'm also more comfortable hitting chips with the Vokey.

These two PW's can cover 100-150 depending on wind.

Better feel on short game shots if you use a PW for that. This can be pretty subjective I think, but to some a true wedge might feel less "jumpy" than a set PW.

Like your set up. Have you posted in the WITB forum? It'd be cool to see pictures of your gear.

But where's the evidence that a blade wedge is superior for PW or GW?

Plenty of guys including me play Ping wedges which are pretty much cavity back. Great wedges.

With a blade wedge you can control the trajectory more. If you stick to one shot it's not that big of a deal but if you are manipulating the flight to get the right yardage you might find more control in a blade.

Note, I did say 'might'. My short game got better when I got the sw for my set (X2 Hot) and put the blade wedge away (I'd love to find the lw). For me, there was an advantage in having more of the same feel as my irons, plus, having arguably less versatility keeps me from going off the deep end with delusional 'creativity'.

Thanks for the props! Only have my old setup posted there right now, when it's all built up, I'll update it.

I thought I was the only one who did this!

I play a tmb pw bent one strong (44) to keep the flight down. Then I play a 47* vokey with a heavier shaft than my irons.

It works great for me. I joke with people that I play two pitching wedges, but in reality, the vokey is my "gap" wedge.

Probably isn't evidence of, just what leading edge you prefer. My set pw has a straight leading edge and it's a little easier to align... but those are just preferences (I also use my pw just as a 10 iron so full shots only) to each his own though
