Lightest x flex graphite shaft with torque less than 4.0?

rwegolfing

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am looking to go as light as possible this year with the driver shaft. Trying to keep the launch high and spin low with the torque. Anyone have any suggestions out there? Haven't been able to shaft my Fujikura 53K up yet either. Was playing a TP Phenom 55 with good results.

Thanks

Kenny

X-Flex is only a label to show where the shaft belong in its own family, so dont expect all shafts with this label top be in the stiffer end of flex

In one of my drivers im using Grafalloy Booyah X flex who is officially 51 grams uncut, with a TQ of 4.0

Its discontinued and might be fond for silly low prices.

Depending on swing characteristics, Club speed between 95 to 105 seems to be right for this shaft

ive used it for a few LPGA players in the high 90 to 100, but non of them has more than a moderate swing tempo and aggressiveness in transition and down swing to add some info for the OP to judge if this might be used.

This is one of the LPGA players ive fit into that shaft, so try to judge your own use of power compared to that.

There is a few strokes with that driver on the last half of this short video, her CS is 98-100

It's expensive and a little tough to find, but the Fujikura Platinum Speeder 50 X. Another is the Diamana W-Series 50 X. Still a third option is the Diamana X-Series 50X.

Project X had the Pxv Tour 52 a few years ago, 52gr model in their typical 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, etc. These still had tip torques under 3.0 and were surprisingly very low flight / low spin still. I tried the 6.0 for a bit but changed it out for something with more feel. With the right swing though I'd say it'd be worth looking into.

Aldila NV Magnum 44 X has a torque right at 4.0, the TX has a torque of 3.4. (weight 48 and 49 gms)

Aftermarket Phenom 50 is similar (4.0 for X, 3.8 for TX) but a few grams heavier (54 gm).

But torque has nothing directly to do with launch or spin. Only feel.

Does torque indirectly affect launch or spin?

Well, to be honest as I understand it (for full disclosure) there are very rare cases with very high swing speed (even higher than WRX standard) and very late release where the effect might become a bit more direct. e.g. Long drive players may have to worry about it but not most mortals. But that's not going to be the case for the OP if he really does fit into that light weight shaft. And the effect is more about consistency and dispersion than a specific influence on launch/spin.

As far as indirect influences go, only if the change in feel from the different torque results in a change to your swing. It's possible but not as well understood as it is for the bend profile. For most torque effects the feel at impact more so than the feel pre-impact so the potential for influencing the swing would seem to be less. But it's not unheard of by any means and depends a lot on the sensitivity of the individual and the specific mechanics. I don't know but suspect it may be a bit more prominent pre-impact for those with higher swing speeds and higher face closer rates through the release. Most of the evidence is annectotal and not a lot of data to go on. Largely because it's not very common to find shafts where we can test a change in torque without also having a change in the longitudinal bend profile. UST tried this not too long ago with the VTS line but they seem to have abandoned all but the silver versions. Don't really know why though.

Fujikura Platinum Speeder with the T1100G and 90t carbon is touted

as being an active tip profile but able to minimize the amount of

dynamic loft added at impact. Thus lowering spin. Feels alot like

the UST Attas 4U ( stiff butt/firm mid/active tip)

Still early in the testing phase, but I'm getting very good results

with mine paired with a head that spun too much for the Attas 4U

Edit: Platinum Speeder 50 torque 3.3 in X flex / 3.5 in SR flex

Thanks guys for all the recommendations. Here are my numbers from my last 100 or so drivers on the trackman. These have been a mix of Phenom 55 on 661, so take that into it.

106.7 158.7 11.4 2580

I have found that my ballspeed is probably 2mph faster with Phenom but my on course swings are better with the 661. Just looking for the perfect combo!

Just tee it up a little higher, and address it more toe side....

Then you get more ball speed, higher launch and lower spin.

Get a whiteboard pen (dry erase marker) and make a DOT in the ball you align against sweetspot at address and try to dial in the smiley on this photo.

Platinum 50X's raw weight is about 61 grams... but they do come in 40X, although I have not put the 40X on a weight scale myself.

UST is rereleasing the VTS line this year through the TSPX network.

I just got a Fubuki ZT50 X in my driver. 59 gm and 4.5 torque, and it feels really nice. I had been using a 565 Speeder R, but I like the Fubuki a bit better so far. A little better feel (even with an X v. R) and a little flatter ball flight.

To me, there are a lot of better 50X shafts offering from Fuji and MRC especially if you need to lower your spin a bit more. The new Fubuki V 50X is good, the BF 50X and the new 2017 Diamana X 50X is outstanding in my book. Fujikura has a few 50X, their JDM Speeder Platinum 50X is a great shaft.
