W H Ultradyne II Irons

Walter Hagen golf clubs have been made under the Wilson umbrella since Walter Hagen himself sold the company to them in the 1940s.

Golf Club Price and ID Guide states 1975 was the first year for the Ultradyne II irons to appear.

Ultradyne II irons were cast instead of forged, with shaft over hosel design, and countertorque twist shafts (which did appear in Wilson clubs as well.)

Made in both RH and LH models, the Ultradyne II irons had the drill thru hosel, but like most cast clubs of this period, had issues with bending...

Your set appears to be in good condition. An Ultradyne II SAND IRON model was also available.

The shaft over hosel movement had it's day. I've hit some by various manufacturers, but some of the best feeling and truest that I ever hit were those butt-ugly Spalding Executive cast irons. I don't know how much of the feel was the club's and how much can be attributed to the Spalding Jet Step shaft, which was a good one in it's day. I worked with them in practice, almost put them in my bag, but opted for some Apex PCs instead.

I kinda like the look of these. But I will agree that they are nice irons. I play with them from time to time and I really enjoy them. I think about keeping them as my main clubs, but for some reason I don't. But I really should because they are that good.

They could be, I acquired them in a literal pick up truck load of golf stuff I bought. I had to leave behind a push cart and 1 bag because I couldn't get them in. I moved nearly all the modern clubs. Pulled out a hand full for my personal collection.

It's still overwhelming to look at what is left. I know many will frown upon it, but quite a few of them are going to become wine and coat racks. I look in here regularly to see what might be worth saving .. I also host a wiffle golf tournament in my yard, and I provide clubs for all.

On the topic of Walter Hagen Ultradyne II irons (at the time owned by Wilson Staff), I have questions, as I seem to notice a discrepancy where WH came out with two types of Ultradyne II’s in the 70’s... Circa 1973-75 (attached) and then a redesigned version in ‘76 (attached)... Now, stay with me because there are two parts and both related but it brings me to a few questions for anyone with knowledge on the topic.

1.) Why do the circa 1973-75 Ultradyne II’s share the same name with the differently designed 1976 models? and; 2.) Why do the 1976 Ultradyne II and 1977 Ultradyne III share the exact same club head design but different name?

I do know, that the 1976 version had a shaft over-hosel design (using the now obsolete .395 True Temper shafts) and in 1977 they switched to a shaft in-hosel design (traditional .355 steel shafts). However, it seems like the 1976 redesigned versions never should have beared/carried the Ultradyne II name at all as the redesign alone warranted the name change to Ultradyne III, no?

My suspicion is that there was a mistake that someone here can explain at some point and hopefully, maybe a great story to go with it! Cheers!

For two years, 1978-79, the Executive was the world's best selling set of irons.  Amazingly easy to hit.

bumping an old thread -

Wonder if anyone has info regarding the conventional .355 shafts used in the Ultradyne III's ?

I'm looking at set that has no shaft labels and trying to figure out the difference between R and S.

also, were they parallel or tapered..

many thanks for your help.

Hi.  I have my Dad’s set of IIIs in the basement.  They have a label with black lettering and say “Pro Flex S.”  There’s also a small red paint or something like that where the first step begins. Distance from top of silver ferrule to red line on 5-iron is 6.25”.

BTW - the twisted steel on the IIs were called “countertorque” shafts.  He had the irons and woods and the irons sheered.  They sent him a III set as a replacement but kept the woods.  When I started in 1991, I used the woods.  The 3W was a monster.  A shame when the 4W insert cracked and basically obliterated the head.
