Came across this great video today. Its a series done by Green Jacket Golf Auctions, its Awesome ! Check out Al. G 59 set at the end of the video ! This is all the stuff we have been talking about for years ! :) Enjoy

Seems all the clubs we go gaga over the big collectors don't care about unless it's probably something played by one of the greats. Hickory big among the real collectors for good reason...

Ditto! It would appear that there are bargains in golf collectibles too where actual vintage pieces are cheaper to acquire than more modern day memorabilia.

 

Does anyone have a set of those bird on ball Spaldings from '77 when Gieberger shot his 59?

Met Phil Gibbs at the AZ Desert Hickory event back in 2013 ... bought one of my best hickory clubs off him. Nice bloke :)

Maybe it's time to unload. Collectibles go through cycles. I can remember ridiculous prices being paid for hockey cards 15 years ago; today, unless you have a Gretzky rookie card, they aren't worth much. I have a selection of fine bone china tea cups that belonged to my mother. When we dispersed her house contents twenty years ago we kept them despite the protests of the auctioneer. Big mistake; today, they are worthless.

Classic !! Phil has a couple clubs that I sold him in his collection. Fun to watch, and always nice to see others who have the collecting sickness worse than you do :)

I was shocked by the price paid for the MacGregor split sole irons, despite the fact that Jack Nicklaus said he never played them!

 

There is often a major problem with club authenticity at these auctions. I've had issues with them previously - in one case I demanded a letter of authenticity. In another recent auction I passed on a driver claimed to have been played by Arnold Palmer because I just didn't believe the claim - even though I wanted that driver so bad I could taste it!

Thanks Fred for sharing that observation.

 

I never even saw a steel shafted persimmon wood. Maybe age has something to do with his(Mr. Gibbs) collecting preferences.

Your welcome Blair. I think we are a different class of "collectors". Like most, I like to collect clubs that I played and can play today when I want too, rare clubs, pga played always a plus of course, but beautiful persimmons and irons I consider works of art between 1949 and 1996. I don't think they hold the real huge values of clubs shown on the videos, but beautiful keepers most of them... Hickory collectors are a different breed all together. As are the trophy and memorabilia collectors. I was surprised after looking at a good number of those videos myself I didn't see any evidence of those guys owing a great old Mac or an Arnie driver.... They need to head to Texsports place I guess... ;)

Personally I never understood why anyone would want to collect someone else's trophies ... displaying your own fair enough ... but someone else's ? And for SIX figure sums ? Thanks, but I'll pass !

Yes freddiec, we both know that feeling!!

 

But searching, finding, and being able to secure treasures remains a great part of the enjoyment for all us club HO's.

 

I'll freely admit, that with some of my collections, I almost feel required to bid aggressively on items I don't have.

 

So many clubs - so little time!

Some prices and values seem "aggressive" to say the least. Certainly a different market to that I deal in!!

 

I'd take a £150 WB persimmon I can actually use over a $500 old golf tin to put on a shelf... each to their own of course :swoon:
