Bethpage Black Vs. Jersey Shore

Thanks for all the info. I am leaning towards Ferry Point for twilight and sleeping over at Bethpage Black and playing in the morning and driving back in the early afternoon. Both rounds will be played during the week. Does anyone see any type of travel issue with that?

Mike

It's up to you ultimately. But know that it can be hot and humid in July. Advice: if you're gonna play the Black bring a good amount of drinking water with you. Mike, you're gonna be tired after playing the Black. I can't recommend that long drive afterwards especially if you get stuck in afternoon "rush-hour traffic."

Remember there being some water coolers on the Black. For Long Island its hilly but much less than a mtn course. There's not much shade and Tilly made a pretty unrelenting course.

You need to be rl mentally tough to play well. 30-40% of pga pros were mentally shot to win or to make the cut after the past practice rounds from 02/09 US Open and Barclays/Northern Trust playoffs. Carlin's 7 words were frequently heard. However most pros think its fair but make any mistake & the score will suffer.

When traffic is bad, stop off for a break on the way back from Black/Red. The Belt goes right by Coney Island, Nathan's and few other semi-cheap classics.

Totonno's if you want some of the best pizza NYC has to offer...just have to get past the gruff service.

Um, spumoni gardens. Dont f around and get the best.

eh, all depends on what you're looking for. yes, it's the best sicilian i've ever had, bar none, but their regular pizza is average at best.

for classic ny style pizza, still totonno's...OR why choose? can do both since they're only a few blocks away from each other.

I have a cousin that lives in Buffalo NY and I doubt he will be able to play with me when I go. My question is can he make a tee time for me 7 days in advance but not golf with me?

Think it would be ok. Your cousin would get the no show charge on his account though which is like $15.

OP, how long are you staying in Jersey? If you're staying more than 3 days, do one long day for Bethpage (I think just the black will give you as long a day as you can handle), and another day playing two S Jersey courses? Ballamor, Twisted Dunes, and ACCC are very close together so you could play 2 of them out back to back no prob.

As far as handling the greenheads and other predatory bugs at the shore (black flies, strawberry flies, mosquitoes, gnats), as a shore resident I don't know what the big deal is. Well, I do. Everyone wants to wear shorts. Don't do that. Long pants, light synthetic microfiber material, barely any warmer than shorts, air goes right through them. Also protects the legs from sun. Most of the predatory bugs tend to go for the legs and the head. So, add a hat, dab a little DEET on the arms and face, good to go.

Thanks for the great feedback but I am still torn between the two. I have done some crazy things to play golf so I'm not opposed to sleeping in my car to play Bethpage Black. I feel like it is part of the experience. If I do go to Bethpage it will for sure be an all day ordeal. Let me throw this question out there... Is it worth playing the Red course after the black course or should I hit something else on the way home?

Thanks again

Live in jersey and have played all courses mentioned multiple times.

top -Black

2nd ACCC and Ballyowen

3rd Red and Ferry Point -vg stop off

4th others courses

I would go play Ferry Point, eat @Peter Lugar's then sleep overnight @bethpage and do 36 Black then Red.

Go to bethpage @night well before returning beach traffic or bar crowd. Lots of PD out for bar scene on nj/ny highways.

Skip the LIE abd stay on the south shore to southern esp @night.

If you sleep over, you must be present typically when park employee signs you in & puts on bar tag 3:45 to 5am.

Unless you want to be endlessly driving from the top to bottom of the state, focus playing one area. There are many top10 courses south of seaside but not many near it.

Golfnow has some deals. ACCC, Ballmor and Scotland Run are owned by 1 owner, Ottinger Group. They offer discounts if you play multiples of their courses.

In the North, Crystal Springs group offers multiple deals including "stay & play" -Ballyowen #1or2, Wild Turkey #8to10 abd Crystal Springs -tough, bit tricked fairway mounding & rough mounding w& tall fescue. Played 4 courses for $ of 3 wģ discount on hotel.

I endorse Crystal Springs 10 fold. A bit a drive from the shore though.. about 2 hours.

Not really. You should be able to get a 7-8a tee time and be done by 1:30p at latest.

Rough is much less as Northern Trust being being held elsewhere this yr.

You'll be going mostly counter traffic into the city from Bethpage so most routes should be clear. Just google map it and you'll be fine.

Leaving the city is with traffic. However unless your leaving Manhattan or Staten Island after 3:30-4:30 you should be fine. You shouldn't get any major traffic as its only an hr from bethpage to bridge/tunnels leaving nyc.

GSP doesn't rl start to build until after 4-4:30p. If your past the Raritan tolls (after a big bridge) by then you should be ok.

Latest weather trends for june call for below avg temps. Not sure yet on july.

leave nyc via I-95 Geo Washington Bridge and be @Crystal Springs in another 50min from nyc or 1h 50min from Bethpage Black.
