Founders Club Platinum Series Wedges

Hi,

 

Does anybody have any information on the Founder Clubs wedges, specifically the 'platinum series' era?

 

They look to be pretty nice looking wedges and Founders Club obviously have a interesting history involving Miura, Vokey, Harry Taylor etc but I can't seem to find much info on these clubs. Are they forged? Material? Who designed them? Interesting grind/shape? Bounce angles? I noticed there is also a 'forged series' with a chrome finish. Does this mean the platinum series are cast? Different material? Were these clubs lower quality as Founders Club started their decline or are they still quality clubs?

 

Any other Founders Club anecdotes/info would be appreciated and I'm sure interesting.

Don't know much about the Platinum series. From what you can find on the Internets anything pre-2000 from Founders is probably a good club and anything after is not as good. Founders was owned by Asics in the beginning and they let it die off sometime around 2000. It was revived by Paradise Golf and is still around today.

 

The Defense wedges are sought after due to the Vokey tie in and the 200 series clubs from the Miura tie in. The Judge Tour CB and some Fresh Metal irons are pretty well sought after also. Founders is interesting due to all the names associated with the company and it's clubs. The 200 series is a delight to hit.

Platinum Series is definitely from the more recent Founder's Club era, post decline and the big name people leaving. From what I recall it was one of a couple different series they came out with after the re-boot the other being an Oil Can model where they tried to mimic the older designs, but without the quality of craftsmanship or materials.

 

In terms of their classic the 200 series irons and the Defense wedges were mentioned, and they also had a couple of forged CB models that were well regarded as well specifically the Judge Tour CB, which later was called Tour CB II when they went away from the defense idea. Really though what they were most well known for and what got the biggest buzz during their heyday was the Fresh Metal line of woods. You have to remember that Founders was started by Gary Adams the founder of Taylor Made, who people thought of as THE guy for metal wood design back then. The Fresh Metals with their dual rail sole remained popular for years among better players and there were guys on tour carrying them as utility woods for years even after Founders had shut down. At one point in the early 2000s, Titleist made a tour only wood for Davis Love and a few other guys called the Special Cleek that was pretty much an exact knock off of the Fresh Metal wood that those guys had been using in the early 1990s.

I have a two sets of the 200 series. Craftsmanship on them is something else. Just picked up some Defense wedges a few days ago as they were a couple bucks each. Classics.
