Since the moment I heard that phrase, it made sense to me. Years later, it still does, most likely because I've never gone past the phrase, itself. This morning, I read a sample on my Kindle app and was so annoyed, I decided to just go off on my own idea in what it means.

One of the problems with our society in the Information Age is that people tend to read something to find their own biased answers instead of reading to find the authors answers.

Confirmation bias is a problem in many topics.

So you rejected Eddie Merrins because he didn't confirm your misconceptions about what he was teaching. Probably not a good idea.

What did you think it meant?

Do you know if it is similar to what your teacher Manual DeLaTorre taught? It seems it would be. Semantics?

After watching that video where Eddie Merrins says to swing the handle like a 2 handed backhand.....I completely agree with the OP. His misconception almost has to be better than the actual conception.

No, I never even got that far. I just heard 'swing the handle' and I was down the rabbit hole in a flash.

I recently did get Merrins' book and have been enjoying it. His idea of swinging the handle is very different from my psychotic manipulations of the handle. Nice to have both options.

Soon it might just been swinging your hands, or just your arms. Simpler the better.

Considering only the video that's been posted, I think Manny would have said that Merrins is teaching what it feels like to Merrins to swing a golf club. Manny was opposed to teaching feels since they vary from golfer to golfer. He would deny that Merrins is teaching what really happens.

Marrins says he is swinging the handle. Manny would disagree and point out that Marrins is swinging the whole club, not just the handle. Manny favored swinging the whole club and would probably agree that for some golfers who had been focused on swinging the club head swinging the whole club might feel like swinging the handle but he wouldn't teach that. He taught swinging the whole club because that is correct, not swinging the handle because that is wrong.

As an aside, what would it look like if we were to swing just the handle. Club head behind the ball at address, club heads never moves but we swing the handle back and forth with the club head acting as the fulcrum in an inverted pendulum. Handle is swinging but the ball never moves. That's swinging the handle.

Merrins also says that he is swinging the handle with his forearms. Manny would point out that he is doing nothing of the kind. He would point out that on their own the forearms can rotate but not swing back and forth. On the video Marrins is moving his forearms back and forth with a combination of upper arm activity and rotation of the trunk. If you doubt that he would ask you to test it. Swing the club back until its over your right shoulder, and then using only your forearms, no upper arms allowed, get the club back to the ball. You can't do it. In fact the only way you can return the club to the ball is through the use of the upper arms, elbow to shoulder. Without the upper arms the forearms can't do it, and neither can the legs, hips, shoulders, hands or feet. You need your upper arms to get back to the ball. That's why he taught the upper arms.

You should write a book called: "And then Manny said to Merrins..."
