Blades to Semi Blades

I have been playing nike VRpro's for 4 years, I shoot in the 80's, and I believe the blades helped me get there, since I can feel everything.

My problem is, I just got some news irons, Callaway apex pro w KBS Tour-V shafts, and they felt great when i was fitting them, but now i'm not so sure after a day at the range. I'm getting a bit more distance but, I feel like I can't feel anything, and can't tell how i'm hitting the ball.

My main question is: has anyone went from blades to blade/cavity type iron and liked it? Does it just take a little to get used to?? I'm ready to just get my blades tuned up or trade the callaways in for another type of blade similar to nikes.. they feel great, mainly because you can really feel your shots, good or bad... I would argue that hitting it perfect is 2nd to sex.... lol

What do you think? should I keep at it with the Callaway Apex Pros?

Also, can anyone recommend a blade that is similar to the nike VR pros in size and feel?

I made the switch from VR Pro Blades to Ap2 716s. I am generally happy with the Ap2 as there is some feedback on mishits. I still keep my blades as a backup and I do miss them sometimes. I do like having the extra distance and spin. That being said, I could easily go back to the Nikes. If the Apex is hurting your game then by all means go with what works. Blades similar to the VRpro's are the New Callaway Apex MB. The Titleist 714MB is virtually the same club as the VRpro. The 716MB is also a fine muscleback. The Mizuno, Cobra, Bridgestone and Srixon. Are a little less traditional but may be a happy median between the Apex and the Vr.

I personally would not consider the Apex pro to be blade like. I tried them when I was getting fitted and didn't like the feel at all. I am coming from Titleist 690mb and love the feel but wanted something with a little more forgiveness without sacrificing feel. After trying many different sets I am getting a 716 cb/mb combo set. Part of the reason I went with this set was the traditional lofts because my wedges and wood setup is based off the 690mb lofts which are only 1* weaker than the 716 cb/mb. I'm sure you will get all the usual recommendations (Mizuno, srixon, etc) but you should certainly look into the Wilson V6. They are a traditionally lofted cavity back club that feels amazing and have a good amount of forgiveness for a better players iron due the addition of tungsten plus they are cheaper than pretty much everything. I chose the Titleist over the Wilson simply because I had a big credit at my local golf galaxy and they don't offer the Wilson V6. Otherwise I would likely have picked the V6 as the performance between the 2 was almost identical and the V6 is at least a few hundred cheaper. Look up Rick Shiels recent review of the V6. He said he might put them in the bag.

Thanks for the feedback guys... I'm gonna have a look @ Titleist, Apex, Wilson blades....

I think overall my fitting wasn't good, tried someone in the golf digest top 100.... it was more of a club pushing session, and I thought I liked the Apex Pros... we didn't even hit titleist AP's, or any blades beside PXG.

pretty annoyed about that whole situation, (for another forum section , HAHA) now that i think about it, but i'm in my 30's and I guess you live an learn...

What shaft did you have in the VR Pro's? I say this because I switched from the MP-68's to the Apex Pros 16's with the KBS Tour V's and HATED them. Once I put the Project X in the difference was night and day. I got my feel back and now I'm in love.

I thought the Apex Pro and KBS Tour V was the best thing at the fitting, not so much in the real world.

I was the same way! I wanted that feel I had during the fitting back, but that only came as soon as I got rid of the KBS Tour V's. Maybe try replacing the 6 or 7 iron with the s300's and see if that helps.

Thanks for the great advice, it is something I will look into if I decide to keep the Callaways. Can a shaft really make that much of a difference? I mean with the Apex pros it feels like I'm hitting wood blocks no clipping sound, no compression feeling etc.... really surprised with how different they really feel from the fitting... With my Nikes, it's like I'm actually hitting the ball with my hand itself, which I really have grown to like, feels like your really playing golf, and can perfect your swing.... not just knocking a ball around with no rhyme or reason how...

maybe the fitter rigged the system to get me to buy something??? I was hitting the callaways up to 20 yards further than my blades at fitting (in simulator) but testing side by side this weekend on the range with the new set it was a whole other story. yes I got a couple yards extra on the shorter clubs, but not 15-20 on all clubs like it was in fitting (simulator), and there is control loss...bummer ...

I'll be making a post about my recent fitting, that took 1.5 months to actually get the clubs... as bad as the taste is in my mouth, there are some comedic takes on what happened for my fitting...

In my opinion the shaft plays that big of a difference. The Tour V's to me is a funny feeling shaft, but that could be my swing as other people I know love them. I was going to return my Pro16's until I tried them with different shafts. Now I feel that compression and softness I had with my MP-68's.

To say the fitting was rigged is a possibility, but what are the lofts on blades to the pro 16's? I saw small gain in distance, big nothing like you're talking about. With the cf 16's I saw 20 yard gains.

I'm guessing the simulator shots were hit off a mat? I played MP32s for about 10 years before moving to my 716CBs. I don't think the blades made me a better ball striker. I think that narrative is rubbish actually. Lessons make you better, not clubs.

Yes they were off a mat, but the driving range i go to is also on a mat.

and it isn't rubbish for me, I got them for that purpose i knowing what i'm doing, and I've become a better ball striker. Of course lessons will help you understand, but it's really putting in the work/time and not getting discouraged... sure you can get lessons, but if you don't practice practice practice, it's like anything else, just a lesson, no skill building...

Anyways this post wasn't about being better because of clubs, it's about the crappy feel or no feel my new clubs have when i'm really hitting them compared to when i got fitted...

I switched from the Titleist 735 CM's to the Apex Pro 16 and i hit every shaft under the sun. The DG is still in a lot of pros bags for a reason, I just went up to a X100 to knock a little spin off of the ball.

The short irons in the CM735s were pretty much blades and I can't tell you how much more i like the Apexes after a full season. Get the shafts figured out and I would imagine you find the same.

So I spent some more time at the range, and I just think the center of gravity on the Nike blades is in the heal, and for the Apex it's more towards the center, even feels like maybe in the toe? Very very easy to draw with the apex for me, but I'm having a hard time fading my shot with them( I keep thinking of a few holes in my area that are par 3 with slight doglegs right, are gonna be a problem). With my Nikes I setup with a closed face and they go slight draw or straight, with a square face/slightly open at setup it would fade.

I do like the feel of the apex after hitting it some more, but like the previous post, I think i'll just need to get used to setting up with more open club face, just feels weird at the moment.

So I solved the problem and wanted to give the update. I went to the fitter I've always had lie adjustments with, not sure why i didn't go to him in the first place, but i would say my initial intention was to go to one of these accredited "golf digest top 100" club fitters....

anyways, the lie angles were not set properly, I'm 5 8', they were too upright for my swing, he said, and were far off from were I needed it. Because they weren't as flat as I need my lie, he said it causes the toe to close up during impact, thus was causing the massive draw/hook and wasn't able to move the ball flight left to right at all. Made sense to me, since it felt like the club was toe heavy on release.

So he adjusted my lie angles properly and now my shot trajectory is back to normal, similar to what I've known on the nikes. Loving it, must have hit 600 balls this morning. Straight, the draw is easy and soft, no hooking, and the fade works again if I want it.

Great advice. Lie angle off by 1 degree, no big deal. But more than that and it is noticeable. Makes shots feel clunky, just off.

For those still looking, I will also throw in a shout-out to the Wilson Staff V6. For anyone moving from blades to more forgiveness, these are worth a demo. The 37g weigjht they put behind the impact area gives it a better feel than most CB designs. I was about to buy either Mizuno JPX 900 or Ping i200. Now am leaning toward Wilson V6, which finally showed up in a local store.

I'm glad you found your issue. I wish mine was the lie instead of the shaft as I could have saved myself some money.
