Wilson Duo Urethane

I was looking for a ball softer than the Chrome Soft (the 2017 model is a bit firmer and I liked the 2016 feel better) but had decent spin and was told about the new Duo U. I have never played a Wilson product of any kind. Tried it for the first time yesterday. I have to say that my first impression is very positive. It is definitely soft!!! I played it on a course I have never played before so I can't speak to comparisons yet. I will be taking it on my home course later in the week. Off the driver it does not seem to go as far as the CS or the Supersoft(I have been messing with the SS a bit and loved the distance but did not like the lack of green side spin). That was based solely on comparison to my partners drives as I typically can outdrive him by 10-20 yards but he got me on a few holes when I felt like I hit it solid. He is also playing a new ball (TP5X) and says he is hitting it longer so I may be hitting the Duo U just as long as the CS or SS. Once I get on my home course I'll know. As far as irons the distance was pretty much spot on to the SS but the ball checked up nicely as I would expect a urethane ball to where the SS would roll out. Touch shots of 50-80 yards seemed to fly a bit further. Putting felt very similar to the CS which is very nice. As I said my first impression is pretty positive. If your looking for a very soft ball with decent spin this may be one to look at. I'll update my thoughts after I play a few more home course rounds.

I played my first round with one last week and it performed well. I normally play Chrome Soft balls but I have been spinning the irons too much losing distance. These seem to be a good compromise of feel and spin. These had a little more roll out than the others, but distance was good. I need a few more rounds to make a decision but so far they have left me with a good impression.

I'm not a Chrome Soft fan so wanted another option for a winter tour ball. I bought some Duo-urethanes. They are OK, but not any better than CS to me, and not really that much better than the regular Duo either (at least to me). I really wanted to like them, and I like them fine...just not at the $40+ price point. I'll get the Duos for $20 thank you. There is also a Duo elite or something like that. I want to try that one next.

I think the Duo Urethane's are too soft as a somewhat higher speed player, but they have become my winter ball of choice when playing below 45F. They perform very well and spin great, but the low compression really helps when the temperature drops.

Edit: let me add that I got them for $30/dozen which is nice.

I played another round with the Duo U on my home course and was very impressed. The ball is performing wonderfully for me. I am playing pretty good golf right now and the ball is doing exactly as I need it to. Distance is definitely on par with the Supersoft and Chromesoft for me. I had no problems hitting it past my playing partners today!!! Approaches into the greens had vey nice spin. Ball checked quickly and distances were true with my irons as I experienced in the previous round. Chipping and putting were predictable and I had several half to 3/4 shots that flew as expected. I believe I have found my ball for this season!!!

Sirparalot, this is a great ball for sure. Totally underrated, I have always been a Wilson Staff guy and picked up a sleeve to play at Dubsdread one afternoon and was very statisfied with the purchase. Great response off irons, awesome feel around the greens and the ball plays through the wind very nicely. Can't reccomend it enough. Glad to see my fellow Seminole had a similar reaction to it.

I've been using this ball here in Florida for about 3 months now. For my moderate swing speed ( 90-93) it was noticeably longer,,about 15 yards than the ProV1 I had been using. Green side spin is a little,,I mean just a little less than the ProV,,other than that I see no difference. The DuoU is my ball for the forseeable future.

One other thing,,I get more roll out due to less spin off the driver, but iron spin is great.

Great ball for $38/DZ. I played them until I was able to get the TPx for $40/DZ. I loved the regular DUO, at $20/DZ I still think it's the best deal around and I find the DUO U to perform really well off every club. I do agree, my wedges from 100 and in seem to go further than expected but hitting these into greens with irons feels like pure fun. I would say they perform as well as prior gen PV1 with a softer feel. They seem to tear up a little quicker than I would like but nothing too terrible. Very good performing ball.

Good ball. My swing speed is about 105 with a driver and the Duo U was as long as any ball I've ever played. At first it felt mushy soft, but I've gotten used to it and now like it. I'm using spring face irons which sound sort of clunky on mishits but the softer ball helps mitigate the negativity of that situation. If anyone finds a good sale on them I'll throw down for some more. I'm just cheap.

Prolly going to try these at some point. I love the 50 elite for some non serious rounds on muni courses. I love the soft feel, especially not losing distance. I have 3 doz kirklands and was about to place an order for some Snell but if I can snag these cheap somewhere I would, but not for the $37 at the chain stores.

I can't remember, didn't the duo urethane get a gold in 2016 golf digest and Snell get a silver?

Why was that again?

  • 2 weeks later...

I picked up 3 dozen of them from golfballs.com (logo overruns) for $25.95 a dozen and had a coupon to knock $10 off. I definitely think they are worth that.

This is definitely my ball for the season. I am playing some of my most consistent golf ever and this ball is definitely part of that equation!! Went on golfballs.com and was able to order 2 boxes of over runs and use the $10 off coupon. Definitely worth $40 for 2 doz.!!!

So I received my "logo overruns" today. Not a single logo on any of them, that was a pleasant surprise :D

I did the same thing bought 3 dozen from golfballs.com and the logo over runs had nothing on them ?? I checked each ball out and they all where just like a the regular ones from the Wilson box idk but I was pleasantly suprised

OP Nice write-up and follow up. I have two 2 ball sleeves of these in the bottom of my golf bag and need to try them. I am currently playing the W/S Duo Spin which I switched to last year from the Duo to try and get a bit more spin and control around the green (short approach shots, chipping and putting). I am just worried about the Duo U spinning too much as I am a high ball, high spin player as I could stop a regular Duo on the green on approach with a 4 iron. I would stay with that great $20 ball but I don't like the way it plays around the green...too little spin for me. But I need to give the Duo U a try???

There is a 2017 CS? How do you tell the difference? Boxes from last year look the same.

Got to put the Duo U in play and liked the feel and how it performed with the irons. One thing that was odd is the sound it made off the driver was very odd. So much that I thought maybe my driver had a crack or something loose. My partner also noticed a significant difference in the sound, maybe the super low compression is just different than my normal firmer tour balls.

Switched back to a firmer ball and the driver sounded normal again. Overall I liked the ball but not a keeper for me. Got 3 sleeves left I will slowly dwindle at some point.

Maybe that sound from the Duo is the new "normal" :)
