Richmond, VA Golf

Hey guys, coming to the Golf WRX community for help. I'm the best man in a wedding in Richmond in mid-late May, and the groom is hoping to play golf the morning before somewhere in the area. I'm looking for recommendations of courses to play in the area. We'll probably have between 4 and 8 guys playing, with a range of skill levels. He's looked at a few courses, and sent me Mill Quarter Plantation as one suggestion - I don't know anything about these courses as none of us are from the area. Any suggestions?

1) Public golf in Richmond kind of sucks

 

2) Depends what you are looking for.

 

Mill Quarter is a nice little country course. Pros: cheap, probably won't be crowded, having beginners/slower golfers shouldn't be much of an issue. Cons: Its 30-40 min from downtown (not sure where you guys are staying), the conditions won't be the best (but should be decent value for the price).

 

Independence GC is probably the best public in town - but it will be more expensive, more crowded, and less forgiving of beginners/hackers.

 

On the other side of town, Brickshire and Viniterra, and Royal New Kent all possibilities.

 

Sycamore Creek or The Crossings are other options.

 

 

Good news is that in late May, course conditions everywhere should be at (relative) peak, even the lower budget places.

 

 

If price and golfer skill level not an issue - go with Independence or Viniterra.

Viniterra is awesome. It's a visually impressive layout, but I don't recall it being particularly unforgiving, so all players should enjoy.

Interested to see where you decided to play? Don't know where in Richmond the wedding is but Magnolia Green would be a good choice to. PM me if you still need some help

Royal New Kent is my favourite in the Richmond area. Brickshire and Stonehouse are good too. Played those 3 courses many times over the years. They are part of the Traditions group, but give a call.

As folks have said, depends on what you are looking for / what side of town you are willing to travel to...

 

My overall assessment of RIC public golf is that there are good courses but they are often pricier than you would find in other areas.

 

Anyway, on the Southside, you have Birkdale, Magnolia Green, Independence and Providence. Magnolia Green is likely the best of those but also the priciest.

 

The eastern side / Williamsburg has a lot of good courses...Brickshire, Viniterra, Stonehouse

 

On the West End and slightly north you have the Crossings, the Hollows (not great), Sycamore Creek, and The Federal Club may still be semi-private, Hunting Hawk. If Federal Club is still semi private it is by far the best of these but also expensive. Further west, almost in Charlottesville, is Spring Creek which may still be semi-private and is a great track.

I know the wedding is long since over, but just in case someone stumbles on this thread... do call The Crossings before playing. It's my daughter's HS home course, and the front nine is under construction (as is one hole on the back and the putting green). She plays it because she has to, not willingly.
