Gary Player on drugs in golf

Recommended Posts

Since Gary Player publicly insists he is such a super Christian it is only natural for him to look down on nearly everythig and everyone but himself. In fact,,he reminds me of many others including political leaders who think they have some sort of license to be moral leaders because of their religious affilation.

This is the saddest and most stupid kind of mistake.

That's hilarious. Lionstar, I grew up in Dr. Phillips and will be back down in a couple weeks, we should play golf....

P.S. The only person on roids is Annika. From small and cute to butch and pimply with arms bigger than VJ's caddy. Funny how when the LPGA starts testing for juice she comes up with an injury that keeps her out for a couple months. Then when she finally cleans up and is off the roids for awhile she looks normal. At least her roid episode was discreet lol. I'm sure the LPGA testing had nothing to do with their best player being blatantly on juice.......

Player is an idiot, a good golfer but nevertheless a very unintelligent person.

I'm getting tired of the 'old brigade' (most notably Player and Nicklaus), tarnishing modern golfers.

Technology improves, physicality improves, skill improves - it's called human evolution and i wish they'd just get over it a start dishing out some praise for a change.

OK Steve,,I'll be back in Windermere in late September for the winter and would enjoy a round at OCN with you.

As much as I respect Annika I think you are probably right.I'm sure she isn't the only LPGA [or PGA ] player who has used them,,but I don't think roids are a substantial problem on either tour.If it were, you would see players slinging clubs, decking caddies and flipping off the gallery EVERY TOURNAMENT!

Could it be that some of these "old-timers", like Player, Nicklaus and Palmer are just trying to protect the integrity of the game? I know Palmer recently said that he felt an obligation to help protect it.

Are there players on the Tour using performance enhancing drugs? Personally it would not surprise me. Testing can either prove it is not a problem or help clear the problem up. If they do test it should be everybody. Well maybe not John Daly or Tim Herron.

Didn't Palmer endorse the non-conforming ERC driver a few years ago..... Golf is one sport where you call out cheaters by name. I'm with Goosen, if Player knows for a fact that people are on steroids then he is obligated to name them because the game is more important than the individual.

Is it just me, or does Gary Player seen intent on courting controversy at every turn?

If he's not busy attributing Tom Watson's success to the illegal grooves on his clubs he's whinging on about this latest 'revelation.' No doubt he spent a large part of the press conference telling everyone how he still does five thousand situps before breakfast every day and that he can still play as well as he ever could...

'I shot 85, but that was only due to two bad shots. I played magnificently today....'

Gary. We all know you're fit for your age; but stop going on and on about it. And how you've flown more miles than any other professional golfer. And how you've got the best horse in the world at your ranch and you can still wear a pair of trousers from the 1970s.... It's just really, really boring Gary.

Anyone who looks like being a comparably good bunker player is immediately shot down by Mr Player who will tell us all that it's all due to 60-degree wedges and square grooves... 'I never had that technology when I was playing' etc. etc.

There's another, similar post on this subject, where I (and a few others) have had a mini-rant. A Gary Player soundbite is more of a concern to me than some unknown golfer using creatine or something similar.

I would go on, but I'm nodding off just talking about him.

You just summed up Player perfectly. :cheesy: Thanks for the very entertaining post.

Just test for it and be done with it. Personally, I'm fine with the athletes I watch being on roids. Realistically, athletes are looking for ways to enhance themselves physically. However, after what has happened with baseball it seems people have a problem with roids. So just go ahead and test for what you can, because golf doesn't need to get into the position where baseball is and everybody is accused of being on roids without anything concrete backing it up.

baseball's situation is entirely different than golf's.

they'll never be similar at all, regardless of what Player thinks.

honestly, the effects of steroids vary from sport to sport, so i'd be interested to hear what the real advantage taking steroids would have with regards to playing golf.

Two people admitted to Gary under an oath of secrecy that they were juiced??? I don't think there are any players on the tour that are that dumb, given his record for grandstanding.

Plus how does that conversation go down in a quiet corner of the locker room..... Well Gary I have something to tell you... But first you must sign this affidavit and let some blood in a sacred ceremony involving animal sacrifice.....

First of all, despite the fact that the mystique of Tiger's workout regimen has put golf fitness a little more in the mainstream, most of the tour players are far from physical specimen. Who could possibly be gassed up based their physiques????? Outside of Woods, there are merely a handful of guys who appear to have any muscular development whatsoever. Appleby is a broad guy, as is Peter Lonard, and most of the Aussies are at least in shape, but steroid looking, no chance. Villegas is in shape, but is about 145lbds. I would probably agree that the most substancial change in muscle mass, I have seen is in Annika Sorenstam. Lets face it, any corporate office of 25 average guys will be in about a good of shape as tour players. Testing these guys is a waste of money.

I think that mngopher got it absolutely right. To get the steroids to work, you have to work your a** off in the gym. Injecting you the stuff will not grow you muscle overnight. Given the shape of most golfers on Tour, widespread use of steroids seems ridiculous. I was watching Baddeley and Rose paired together at the US open and these 2 guys are young guns in there 20s and both are showing sign of growing bellies. I could not believe my eyes as I thought these guys would work like hell to be in competing shape (like Tiger). But this is forgetting that golf is first and foremost a feel game. This limits very seriously the potential use of drugs. However I think this is a very good thing that the tour is introducing a policy. I'm pretty sure that guys will be caught as there is too much money on the table not to lay ground for this, but it will not be the Tour de France LOL

As for Player, I think the part on "I took an oath..." is absolutely ridiculous. How often do you talk to a guy and take an oath??? Idiotic!

Shhh!....But I have got the information everyone has been waiting for. There are two guys everyone needs to take a close look at. Look closely at the transformation over the last couple years and you cant tell me they havent gotten bigger. I mean these guys walk 5-7 miles a day probably 6 times a week. Do you think they can get this big from walking the fairways. There has only one reason Tim Herron and Kevin Stadler look they way they do. Thanks for bringing this serious issue to the forefront Mr. Player. Bravo!

I ahve always admire Player as a Golfer but like Johnny Miller he loves to stir the pot and stay in the headlines years after he would have retired in any other sport.

Faldo was interviewed on BBC yesterday morning and he said he had heard not one sniff on the tours. Golfers today are athletes, they train harder, are taller than before, so many guys over 6ft out there, are mort flexible, watch what they eat, have the best gear custom fitted - hey presto bigger drives and lower scores. It is called progression. I would actually question Player. How is he so super fit at 72, is he taking something?

Creatine is a naturally occuring drug and I read that 50% of people who take it already have enough in their system and the body flushes it straight through without any effect or benefit.

Being muscle bound isn't great for Golf. In my early 20s I got into pumping iron and my Golf suffered badly, being quite short I lost the ability to turn or release. Most longer hitters I know are tall and slim. 2 longest hitters in our club are about 5ft10" and very slim but also flexible and have great technique not 48in chest and bull necks.

Gary, please go back to feeding the horses and keep your trap shut.

First off I have never heard of Palmer or Nicklaus saying anything about the tour or protecting the game that they could not back up. So lumping them with Player is just not fair.

Gary Player as I stated before does not appear all that intelligent and he may be and attention whore. But just his playing record it seems deserves a bit more respect than some of you are giving him. We are after all talking about what one of the ten best golfers ever?

I would love to see them test for drugs on all the tours. Then there will be no questions.

Whats really sad is the reward for working out and acting like athletes is you get accused of using roids.

I am sure that Annika or Tiger would have welcomed drug testing at anytime.

Saying that Annika's injury has anything to do with the LPGA testing for roids is just plain rude.

How would you like some one to make accusations about you that they could not begin to prove.
