Patrick Reed lofts and lies off up to 2.5 degrees???

There is no way a tour pro would not know that his irons were off by 2.5 degrees - there is only 3.5 degrees between irons in a standard setup. Forget the fact that even amateurs mostly know when they setup if they accidentally pulled 1 club off.

i agree.

Disagree. When you look at the same clubs day in and day out you get used to how they look at that point in time. You can easily tell when two clubs are different if you are comparing them but if you don't compare the clubs you'll never know. A pro is going to think me first, clubs second. Callaway probably brought him some demo clubs try and he noticed his clubs were way off compared to the new ones which were correct.

Nope, no way. There's no way his lies and/or lofts got off by 2.5 degrees and he didn't know. Exactly like you said - these are tools he uses everyday. He would/should notice the smallest change in weight, lie, loft, grip position, grip size, shaft flex, kickpoint, etc. It is like a NASCAR driver who can feel when his tire loses a couple pounds of pressure. Most people can't tell their tire is low on air until they are almost on the rim. But these guys are FINELY tuned to their equipment. It's remarkable, really.

I couldn't disagree more. His loft/lie didn't just get to 2.5 off overnight. It was most likely a gradual progression of tenths or hundredths of a degree at a time. He finally realized it when the totality of the bending finally caused him to hit wayward shots. NOBODY is feeling the differences in irons that are a tenth of a degree off then they were the day before.

We have a winner

sounds like patrick needs to blame someone for not playing so well. Much easier to blame the clubs

It is impossible for me to disagree more with this. This theory only holds up if there are about 12 months between checking lies/lofts. If, in fact, it changes slowly and gradually over time, as you say, it gets picked up in the tour van. I'm not sure how much experience you have with the Tour process, but there is no way, at all, that this could have happened. The van would have caught it, the rep would have caught it, the factory would have caught it, Reed would have caught it, etc. Actually, he probably would have changed clubs between the time that it would have taken to minutely change 2.5 degrees over a long period of time.

I'm not surprised by the brand he plays

I've worked at a tour event and adjusted clubs for players.

Trust me the issue here is not QC from the Callaway Pro Tour department.

I would expect this to come from wear during use or damage somehow, perhaps in transit.

The irons that he uses are very very soft, using them a lot for a few months without having them checked and adjusted is definitely not a good idea in my opinion.

I have a tough time believing that a Tour pro who has his clubs looked at by the equipment van could be playing with clubs that were so far off. 1. I had heard the manufacturer checks them out before every tournament. 2. a pro golfer at his level should be able to tell based on distance and feel if the lofts and lie are that messed up. Sound like a convenient excuse for poor performance.

I think it's possible ... especially if he didn't check when he got them New and played with them right after. A long time ago, a friend of a friend on the PGA Tour signed a new equipment contract. First set of irons he received were wildly off. He switched companies in a year.

I am a little surprised that he doesn't have a lie and loft machine himself. If I made as much money from golf as he does, I'd practically have a golf lab and equipment trailer in my house.

Idk if I can believe it.. Not that they can't be bent, and that it's an easy notice entirely.. but at the same time, this is the same set of clubs you've hit 1000's of balls with. Lofts bending changes the offset of the club, and I would think that's what he would notice first. You'd have to be reasonably intuitive to be able to see 2* of face angle difference. But the offset and turf interaction is more noticeable, IMO.

Either that or his clubs flew United and were in the wrong spot and they learned their lesson.

  • 1 year later...

The iron lies could easily have been sabotaged by banging them on hard terrain.

These soft forgings could easily head upright by banging the toe.

It's possible?? :golfer:
