C Taper experts....riddle me this!

Recommended Posts

I'm an aging chop.....5 capper trending the wrong way....iron play has been my Achilles as my body has broken down these past 10 years or so. I'm also lefty so a lot of trial n error in an effort to find a combination that gives me some semblance of playability.

I've tried pretty much all stock shafts including dg progressive, kbs tour etc...

With thoughts of px LZ and steelfiber.

After research, modus 105 seem to fit the bill for my swing.... Without much luck.

In the background was a set that always worked but gave me reservations....2009 tour preferred with c taper regular...

More background: previous distance with 7i was 165 carry now barely 140 on great swings with most shafts....

I noticed the C-taper would travel a wee farther AND higher than the other shafts but the reverberation reminded me of project X ever so....

Then 3 rounds ago, the shot heard around South Florida, a full 7i albeit downwind, from 175yds! Now I haven't hit a 7i that far in 8-10 yrs easily..... missed the putt but no biggie.

Then again today, different course; same scenario..176yd par 3 , downwind....7i... doesn't carry 176 but at least 170 where the pitchmark was spotted.

Now gaining confidence, I'm hitting shots like years past.....4i on par 3 195 into Florida fan.... didn't get all the way back to hole but was a great shot at about 185!

Why in the world does a supposed low launch, low spin shaft provide me with perfect launch (higher) and at least a club more distance?

The heads are standard lofted I'm pretty sure.

For many players a better fitting shaft will promote more ideal spin rates and launch angles, leading to a stronger more 'optimal' ball flight.

Forget whether it's described as "low" or "high",....if it fits the player well, ball flight will improve

Funny because years ago I had the same findings with the Aldila RIP Alpha.....

I've been playing C-Tapers since 2013 (130x), I switched from PX 7.0, which is great shaft, but, a bit harsh on miss hits, the CTs are just right for me, I've been able to hit, on the longer side, a 7i 192, on a swing about 90%, my 7i is my 170-175 club...they are very accurate for my swing, love the feel and they spin just enough to hold green on long iron approaches...really solid shaft.

DRIVER: Callaway AI Smoke TD 10.5*, Ventus TR Blue 6TX at 45"
3 WOOD: Callaway AI Smoke TD 15*,  Ventus TR Blue 6X, at 42.5"
7 WOOD: Callaway AI Smoke TD 20*, Denali Black 70g S Flex, tipped 1" at 41"

IRONS: Callaway Apex '24 MB 7-10, CB 4-6 -- DG TI S400

WEDGES: Callaway OPUS 50S, 54S, 58C -- DG TI S400
PUTTER: LAB OZ.1i, specs: 34", 69 lie, 2 deg FP, stock steel shaft (White Hot Pro V-Line as back up)
BALL: Callaway CT (current gamer), Srixon Z-Star Diamond, -ProV1X and ProV1

As other have alluded to the "perfect" fit for YOU can be most anything. Guides are only a starting point.

I played C Tapers for 2 seasons and hit them well although I kept feeling they were "boardy" and there was no real "kick" in them. I went back to DG S300s about 8 months ago for no other reason than they were the originals shafts on my G20s and I wanted to try them again.

Thing is my standard 7 iron is about 150. With lighter weights shafts my ball goes a little farther (no more than 3 yards) but the dispersion is far worse. No brainer to hit shafts a fitter might not even consider (at first).

But also remember the C Tapers are a very low spinning shaft. If drivers have taught us anything, with proper launch and low spin the ball goes farther.

In fact, recently I have made a slight swing change that's got me pretty excited; moving the ball a bit forward in my stance and sweeping the irons more than digging. I'm picking up about 1/2 a club, maybe slightly more but the best news is I'm hitting it straighter as well. I attribute that to higher launch and less spin.

Actually taking me a bit of time to adjust to the new distances.

The only way I'd switch to lighter weights steel shafts or graphite is for health reasons (stiffness, joints, etc.).

Bon chance. :good:

I totally agree that the "perfect" shaft might be something completely off the radar.....it just pleasantly surprises me to have my iron play coming back strong from a shaft that "shouldn't" fit my speed in theory.

I'm not complaining at all mind you....just curious to the science behind it.

C tapers are in a class of their own, never hit something so long. I had to change for gapping reasons. They some how still launch high enough and maintain spin to stick and hold greens. They are unicorns.

What did you move into and how big of a loss in yardage did you find?

Currently playing Project X Flighted 6.0s, I'd probably say I lost around 5-10 yards and then another 5 from changing irons. I had the c tapers in a set of z545s.

RIP Alpha is my all time favorite shaft. Definitely one that doesn't work for a lot of people, but when it does wow.

I think it all depends how you load and release the shaft. I hit Dynamic Golds pretty high and they are supposed to be a high kickpoint lower launching shaft. C-Tapers are excellent shaft, but I have trouble controlling them and haven't figured them out. Medium trajectory and hit them far. For me, only graphite shafts for woods really seem to be much more spot on in terms of launch.

Agreed.....strange how high bend shafts work for an apparent early release.
