Regarding Wanaki, I think it was maybe #15 where you emerged from the woods with a dogleg left? I remember a twilight round where I was walking in the rough in the dogleg, and I started sinking, but it didn't feel or look wet or mushy. So, I took a quick step toward the middle of the fairway. But, when I pushed off, I heard the sod "rip." Two more steps put me on firm ground, so I looked back at the spot where the sod ripped and there wasn't much underneath! A sinkhole!

Also sad to hear Wanaki closing, although heard the rumors for several years. This has been my golfing group's go to course for the early morning rounds as its close to home, cheap, and you're home by 930-10am. Course has always been in pretty good shape for the price tag, greens especially. They really took good care of it for the budget they had. To confirm a previous post, play holes 2-6 as fast as humanly possible if you're going to get another round in this year before closing - the mosquitoes will suffocate you to death.

Also consider Spring Valley if you’re ok with something that’s a bit shaggy but is an absolute blast and many shots remind me of Lawsonia (obvious given its architectural lineage, but still worth noting. It’s the kind of course that if someone randomly decided to maintain it like a top 100 public course it absolutely would be. Well worth the trip!

Has anybody played Fairways of Woodside in Sussex? Won 4 free rounds and booked a tee time... but kind of wondering what to expect...

I have played it a bunch of times. The front 9 is pretty nice, starts off with a driveable par 4. The back 9 is challenging. Some narrow fairways and carrying marsh. Goes in and out of a subdivision. I would say its one of my favorites to play around Milwaukee.

If you do go, try to go earlier, i usually get the 6am start and you can blaze through nicely. Just double check before you go what sort of traffic level is out there. other than that, track always seems to be a good condition.

And the fact that it has NO sand traps makes it unique and exciting. Not super long, but lots of great shots.

MapleCrest is just ok. Some interesting holes but pretty short overall. I haven't played over there in over a year. Highly recommend Brighton Dale next time you want to play 36 in a day. The Blue and White courses out there are in great shape this year and challenging from the correct tees. I am biased as I play out there almost every weekend but they are nice tracks and reasonably priced. If you are playing Thunderhawk and Shepherds Crook in the same day that will be a nice time. Both are very nice layouts and in this case two very different kinds of golf courses.

How are the greens currently on the White course? I know that they were resurfaced back in May.

 

I usually play BDale a few times a year. I agree with your assessment of the courses. Both have some very challenging holes and the setting is nice. And, for a heavily played county course, the greens are always very, very smooth with decent pace. My only issue with the course is that the drainage sucks, but I think that's more of a design issue. On #16 on Blue Spruce, the middle of the fairway has now become a water hazard with how rainy it has been this year.

Had a great time playing 3 rounds on the Links of Lawsonia this past weekend. Course was in great shape, even the bunkers had sand in them. I think that had something to do with the State Am being held there a couple weeks ago. Only found one bunker that was a little bare. Only disappointing part of the course is the green on #8. A couple bare spots, the kind you would associate with winter damage, but was hoping that would be fixed up by late july. Other than that, course was pristine. Greens were a little slow for Lawsonia with all the rain and I ended up repairing more ball marks in one round than I usually do all year out there.

The greens are really in great shape this year everywhere. It wasn't the greens that were re-done, they had a project to take out bunkers and replaced the collars on a few of the greens. In fact I think they made a few of the greens a bit smaller. It has made for a much better experience and probably speeding up play, not to mention easier maintenance. You are right about drainage on certain holes and the first half of this year was definitely wet so that was annoying. It has dried out now though and I would give it a shot if you haven't played yet this year.

(Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask)

Anyone in SE Wisconsin(especially Milwaukee/Waukesha) you guys recommend for installing a leather putter grip or 2? I know anyone should be able to do it but I get a little anxiety about some of the GG/D***s guys depending on who’s working. Bonus if they could blow off/save the pure grips coming off. I have 2 putters on the way from AZ soon & am obviously hoping to get them switched. Thanks much

I am putting a lot of pressure on you guys to play well, play often and post as much as you can.

My season just ended with the scheduling of surgery for a sports hernia. As surgeries go, this is a slam dunk, but recovery to a full swing is 6-8 weeks and I have to wait until mid August for the insurance company to process their friggin pre-approval. I wonder if United would be happy if I didn't pay the premium until I had pre-approved them as being worthy of insuring me. That last sentence was stupid but I am not in a happy place.

Doc, ask for Chris at GG Southridge. IDK if Denny retired at GG Brookfield, but IMO I wouldn’t hesitate to have Mark Voeller over there put on a couple of leather grips for me.

Yeah 8 got ravaged by the brutal winter conditions, tee box, first part of fwy, and green. Tee box was almost completely winter kill at start of season. I was there last Saturday at 740, got around in under 4 hours! And the two groups in front of us were "slow"! Nice to get my dad and bro out there, they both love the course!

Played Fairways of Woodside for the first time on Saturday... The front nine feels very much like Autumn Ridge, short, tight, with quick greens... The back nine kept coming back and reminding me of The Bull, long, hard, and those same quick greens...

 

We got rained on throughout most of the back nine, but I can't wait to play it again under better conditions...

My wife and I have opened the doors to our house to host a couple Symetra Tour players this week. I can't say enough about how wonderful these ladies have been, and if you want to see some quality golf head out to Brown Deer this weekend. These women are clearly in the "for the love of the game" part of chasing their dreams. Budgets are tight, and rewards few, but once the peg is in the ground...They can bring it.
