If you’re willing to drive a little further, could look at the “Perfect 4-some” with Timberstone, Sweetgrass, and Greywalls. I have never been personally, but most seem to have positive feedback.

Been there. Did it last year. Really enjoyed it. Not all that close together but very cost effective and the new course is Sage Run is awesome.

We would be coming from Chicago and looking to keep it under a 3-31/2 hour ride.

I'll check into Lawsonia.

Any other options?

Lawsonia is going to be tough to beat. I would throw in Mascoutin in the Lawsonia area to look at as well. You could do 27 holes at Mascoutin and 36 at Lawsonia for under $300 bucks.

Is there any local talk about what effect the Ryder Cup 2020 at Kohler will have on the golf scene in WI?

Do you think hotels and courses will be fully booked either side for maybe a week?

(No doubt the week itself will be chaotic).

Green fees going up maybe?

Just working out if its going to be viable to hit WI in September or October for a week or two of golf?

I am sure tee times will be tight the week prior to the Ryder Cup and there won't be any discounted greens fees. Things will rapidly return to normal, I would think, in the days following the RC. September and October are wonderful times, seasonally, to play golf in Wisconsin. The only caution I would have is that as you move into October the number of hours of daylight are beginning to wane. 36 hole days become harder to engineer.

The Ryder Cup will be focused on a corridor from Milwaukee (maybe as far south as Chicago) to Sheboygan. Wisconsin is a huge state and there will be a host of excellent options west of lake Michigan.

Phred, as rtraudt and collje26 suggested, I bet the corridor could extend from Milwaukee all the up to the UP.

Hard core gambler / golfers coming from the coasts might go to the UP for the casino and the Graywalls, Timberstone, Sweetgrass and Sage Run combo.

My wife and had a blast at the PGA when it was played at the Straits. But we also saw the rental rates homes in the Milwaukee area were getting. Same during the US Open at Erin Hills. We may end up passing on going to the Ryder Cup, renting the house out and staying at the cabin that week.

I did the full bag fitting on Saturday. Overall, I was pleased. My full review is linked here:

http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1731100-club-fitting-for-average-joes-worth-it/#entry18482832

My fitting was done by Eric Madlung, Manager at the old Golf Galaxy on Layton Avenue. I never really talked much with Eric when he was at GG. But, I got to know him during the fitting, and I would recommend him. Easily, the best part of the fitting for me was putter, wedge, and fairway wood. We pretty much agreed my hybrids and driver were OK.

Anyway, Eric was great to get to know and work with. He taught me a lot, and the experience was overall positive.

When you did the putter fitting, how big was their selection of putters to try out? Are you able to try out a few different brands/styles or is pretty much just a generic mallet or blade recommendation? I’m interested in doing a fitting, but I would prefer to be able to try the putter I’m fit into on the SAM.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner!

The fitter uses the SAM measurements to determine optimal grip size, loft, and "balance type." I recall there being several different putters, but given my needs were so remedial (out-to-in straight stroke, yuck!), impact all over the face, etc. Eric went straight to a Ping with 45* of toe hang and all kinds of optical help and I never left. BTW, as part of the SAM fitting, Eric adjusted my current putter loft a couple of degrees and also recommended a larger grip (like a Super Stroke).

38* with no wind this afternoon. I was out the back door of the office at 1:30 and hitting balls at Moorland by 2 PM. No need for the heaters and it felt really good. The balls buckets are the golf equivalent of mutts. Old Titlest, Noodles, Topflites, Bridgestone, a hodgepodge of logos and the standard range nuggets. I saved the yellow balls for driver in the hope of being able to pick up ball flight better against a back drop of gray sky and snow covered field. It still felt like hitting a bag of rocks and not a day to get excited about yardage, but it was a near as I could get to live ammo since last fall.

Not sure why Moreland all of the sudden has random balls in buckets, I’ve been there 20 times this winter and always had range balls. Last time I went I had like 30/75 that we’re old crap balls clearly from someone’s shag bag

The big thaw has started! A few more inches of snow in NE Wisco last night preceded by rain and sleet. Cannot remember a winter where we've had so much rain, sleet, snow on the same day.

Can not come soon enough. Appleton, WI resident here and it's been hell on earth.

Amen. I’m going to Mexico next week so hoping when I return by the 23rd there’s a lot of progress with the snow melting.

You should try to work out a WRX house swap with somebody out in CA that week!

Supposed to be 60 on Thursday. Golf is getting closer. I know glen erin down in beloit will open as soon as everything is clear. Probably will be my first play.

Squishy. Wet. Cold. Shaggy greens. Sand like brick mortar. Mud balls.

Can't wait!

Updates for those in the New Berlin area (west suburbs of Milwaukee):

Anyone heard about the changes going on at Preserve at Deer Creek in New Berlin? Apparently, they're moving away from the current 9-hole layout to a practice facility with driving range, practice greens, and short game area. Their Facebook page says they are retaining current holes 5,6, and 7; and also states they are installing multiple Trackman bays indoor. Their new name is "The Practice Station" and sounds like they will host several teaching professionals. Sounds like a neat concept...

Deer Haven Golf, also in New Berlin, is returning to being managed by the owner, Jeff Kernen. I worked part-time here last year, and really enjoyed the course layout. It is an executive 9-hole with three par 4s and seven par 3s. One of the par 3s is 220 yards and the card calls it a par 4. (I know that's 10 holes. There are actually two 6th holes!) Anyway, I wish Jeff well, as he has a little gem there.

Just down the road from Deer Haven, Tee It Up Driving Range changed ownership last fall. Their last Facebook post from November shows a pic of a new Range Servant ball dispenser. Anecdotally, I saw a large dumpster next to the clubhouse last fall, and it looked like it was getting full. Was friends with the prior owner, but got busy and was never able to stop to meet the new owners. Always thought if they had an outbuilding for equipment, they could gut the inside, finish the garage area and make a nice little bar area. Be interesting to see what they do...

I took a walk on my home course today. 50/50 snow and grass and probably a foot deep frost line. The next week looks to be above freezing every day with a good bit of sun. I will be in search of something open in southern Wisconsin next weekend.

That sounds very cool. Anxious to hear how the Trackman/Practice faculty works out.

Played Petrifying Springs in Kenosha on Wednesday and it was in good shape, not completely soaked. Out to Brighton Dale Links tomorrow morning, as they opened today. It will be hit or miss for a while but with no rain in the forecast until Sunday, might as well try to get in some early rounds.
