Played 33 at Lawsonia Links yesterday, was great fun as always. They have a big cup scramble today and were setting the cups. Most were on the edges of the green, but a select few right into a ridge. 12 is a real doozy-

lol I know exactly where that is on #12. That hill is gonna run some balls another 25 feet away from the cup if anyone tries to leave the tee shot below the hole.

Playing 36 this coming friday. Starting with the woodlands and then the links. Fingers crossed the wisconsin weather holds off!

Yeah..... not sure the best strategy ...might actually be an easier putt to stop it just short of the ridge and take your chances with a downhiller. Cool thing is you can send it up the ridge and drain it on the way back down.

Played yesterday. Went 74 on the woodlands with 2 doubles and 78 on the links with 2 doubles as well. The woodlands still was struggling with the bunkers. The links was in solid shape minus the greens being brutally slow.

Well, yes and no. My flight to Phoenix leaves tomorrow at 7:30!

 

Most of the grass is showing, but the bunkers have snow and the ground is frozen. I am not aware of any local (Milwaukee) courses still being open.

The later in May that you go your odds of good weather increase exponentially, and even then it is not a sure thing. It is probably the single most volatile month for swings in temps from cool/comfortable to cold and spitting rain. If you look at the averages you would assume you would be okay, but the variability leaves locals wishing for June. I would also note that it could be 65*, sunny and pleasant at Erin Hills and on that same day 50* and windy at Whitling. Whistling sits on the shores of Lake Michigan which acts as a giant 35* radiator at that time of the year.

 

You've picked some fine tracks and there is more to offer if you have time.

A mild December day and a meaningless Packer game had me hitting a large bucket at the Moorland Road Golf Center. There are very few options for winter practice in the Milwaukee area and even less if you want to see full ball flight. Although, truth be told, I found it nearly impossible to pick up the ball flight against white snow much past 150 yards. The hell of it is, my swing feels better now than it did in July. I think it is time to move to a better winter climate or they need to put more effort into Global Warming.

My fitting was done by Eric Madlung, Manager at the old Golf Galaxy on Layton Avenue. I never really talked much with Eric when he was at GG. But, I got to know him during the fitting, and I would recommend him. Easily, the best part of the fitting for me was putter, wedge, and fairway wood. We pretty much agreed my hybrids and driver were OK.

 

Anyway, Eric was great to get to know and work with. He taught me a lot, and the experience was overall positive.

I came home from an Arizona visit to 5+ inches of snow in the driveway and single digit temps. The forecast has us warming up to the 20's ONE day this coming week so that we can get another 5" of snow. Then back into the single digits. I still live here because....Wait wait I will think of it...oh yeah, we have really nice summers. I hit a handful of excellent shots surrounded by a a bunch of mediocrity in AZ, but it was just enough to feel like it was coming together and then...time to go home.

 

I love Wisconsin. I really do. But the older I get that sentiment starts to fray around the edges more and more.

Agreed to the max. I was able to hit balls outside due to a golf course in Marinette, WI having a heated hitting bay. I have been watching a ton of video's on lawsonia, sand valley and other courses in the state of wisconsin. I am determined to do a long weekend either at Sand Valley or make something up with lawsonia, mascoutin and etc. in that area.

Just received an email that Erin Hills will be adding a putting course in 2019.

 

 

Putting Course Coming to Erin Hills in 2019

 

As we build off the momentum created by hosting the 2017 U.S. Open Championship^®, Erin Hills is excited to announce that an 18-hole putting course will be added to the property for the 2019 season.

The putting course will be located to the north of the 1st tee and will be directly in front of the porch of the clubhouse on top of a ridge, even further enhancing the iconic view from the clubhouse. The putting course wraps around a ridge and will feature bold undulations to provide a fun variety of holes for golfers to enjoy in the afternoon and evenings. It will be lit, allowing for friendly after-dinner competitions.

“Building a one-of-a kind putting facility at Erin Hills is incredibly exciting. This is both an added fun factor and a way to practice putting after you test your skills on a U.S. Open Championship golf course. Whether enjoyed during the day, or with a drink under the lights, we hope players will laugh, have fun and come back again and again to enjoy our new creation,” said Dana Fry and Jason Straka, designers of the new putting course.

The putting course is scheduled to open August 1, 2019, or earlier if Mother Nature cooperates"

Thanks. It is strange to me that I don't hear really anything about Sentry World. Not much talk about it on these forums and came out of nowhere in the last golf digest rankings and is ranked 34th in the country (public).

Haven’t played sentry since the remodel. Looking to get there this year but if you’re in that area I would check out mascoutin.

I played Sentry World last August... it was in outstanding condition... I played the wrong tees and hit hybrid off of most tees

I have been to events at Devils Head and looking for a little bit better of courses.

What are some resorts that have 36+ holes and good stay and play packages?

For 36 & stay & play:

Kohler, sand valley will still be pricey

Lawsonia would be very good

Not sure how good a deal at Grand Geneva or Geneva National

Could do lake arrowhead condo/house & play there & sand valley

I’m sure some others here will have some other good ideas

Where are you and how far would you want to drive? As the poster above mentioned to you, I personally think that Lawsonia would be a slam dunk given the cheap on site house rentals that they have. I’ve seen big groups using those places and it looks like a blast, but it’s more of a coolers and grills type of event than a resort (which I would prefer, but some wouldn’t).

If you’re willing to drive a little further, could look at the “Perfect 4-some” with Timberstone, Sweetgrass, and Greywalls. I have never been personally, but most seem to have positive feedback.

We would be coming from Chicago and looking to keep it under a 3-31/2 hour ride.

I’ll check into Lawsonia.
