What Does Your Instructor Have You Working On?

No need to mention names, just curious to know what is and isn't working lately.

Alignment and ball position.

 

Have a tendency over time to open my stance and move the ball forward in my stance leading to shots that leak right.

Instructor figured I'm a high handicap player, w/little time to practice & just prefer to play. So he says my focus must be to improve ball to clubface contact & know where the bottom/contact point of club to the ground is in respect to my golf swing.

Increasing angle of attack on driver. I'm lagging too much and need to release some of my wrist set earlier so I'm not chopping down at the ball.

I'm my own instructor. "We" are working on not working on anything. I struggled for years trying to find the perfect swing, comparing myself to tour players, drills on drills, etc. Everything was so technical and I had to analyze every bad shot. I forgot how to just relax and play the game. I've found golf to be much more enjoyable when I just find my target and swing.

Full swing: Getting the club face OPEN and keeping it there through transition (on plane, good tempo, etc but I've always been a closed face player)

 

Pitches: Taking the club back more straight (feels outside) and getting the hands higher in backswing, the BIG one though is extending my arms (V) throughout the shot and take breaking down at impact/right after

 

Putting (own coach): Use the black line on the putter to line up and keep your head quiet (strong point of my game so I don't concern myself with my stroke unless I notice multiple pulls/pushes in a round)

Posted before but I have this weird dip with my back shoulder that causes me to swing inside to out and hit pushes and hooks.

 

Pause drill and plane work mostly.

 

I'm hitting less hooks every day out. Video shows incremental changes to my swing and a better plane.

 

I'm hoping my cap finally dips close to scratch.

Keeping my right elbow from creeping too far behind my body on the backswing, and getting my right elbow more forward at P6.

Straightening my swing. My old swing was quite flat and involved a lot of wrist manipulation. He's not the first instructor to try and change me but this time it's working. He's had me swinging the club head between four balls and over a club on the back swing to ensure it stays on line. We've also used a 'Golf in Sync' device which seemed to help a lot.

 

I played 9 holes after the lesson and even though I haven't got comfortable with the swing I'm a lot more consistent and the distances are about the same with less effort. Once I've got the swing grooved and can speed up my distance is going to increase a lot. I'm obviously making good contact with the ball more often.

 

I've noticed that with my previous swing if I did a slow motion swing I'd often have to correct the club head at the bottom. With this swing even with the little practice I've had the club head is returning to the correct position without any effort on my part.

 

He's also got me to straighten my left arm/club and move the ball back in my stance. That seems to be getting me some serious launch angles.

My latest instructor has me working on setup. I was bending over too much and hands were too low. New setup doesn't feel "weird" anymore, so that's a good thing. Also working on shallowing the shaft in transition by moving my arms out more. I currently have a steep downswing. But it is getting "some" better.

Posture - more upright with the legs and bent over at the waist. Weight towards balls instead of heels.

 

Plane - less laid off, less left arm separation from chest

 

Downswing - finish taller against left leg; drive right knee into inside of left thigh

 

 

Making strides with the posture/setup and plane. Less hooks, more straight balls and fades. Downswing legwork is still a mess.

Not abducting the right arm so much in the backswing and getting less left knee flexion and forward torso tilt at the top of the swing.

 

Then getting left hip flexion in the downswing and pulling the left leg and hip 'back' earlier in the downswing.

Own coach for now, but:

 

Full swing: Arms starting downswing so right shoulder doesn´t drop down vertically

Short game: Right hand more on top so I can release under (Same motion as hammering a nail, in short)

Putting: Pace and keeping the 15ft conversion around 50% (in practice, I hasten to add)

Tempo. I have a tendency to fire with my hands from the top which leads to all sorts of problems.

 

Outside of that I'm working on changing my swing though from hands starting the downswing to left knee rotating open and keeping soft, slow hands.

Shortening my swing while hinging correctly.

Firing my hips way too early. The drill that works great for me is taking a 7 iron, taking a full swing, and hitting it only 75 yards (making sure I'm always target oriented). Slowly work up to full distance.

 

There's a reason that drill has been used forever and is still used. It works.
