Pronunciation of manufacturer names

Help settle some arguments

This is a regular argument between me and my mates when discussing manufacturers so hopefully you guys will know the answers (although it may well cause more of an argument on here).

Diamana. Is it die-a-marner, dee-a-marner, die-a-man-a or dee-a-man-a?

Aldila. Is it al-dee-la, al-dil-la or al-dee-ya?

Mizuno. Is it my-zoon-oh, mitz-oon-oh or mizz-ooh-no?

Titleist. Is it tight-least or t**-least?

Adidas. As it's spelt or ad-ee-das?

Nike. As it's spelt or nikey?

Not very interesting but I need to know!

I think the a-dee-das and nigh-kee thing is different depending on which side of the pond you're from.

 

I've have to say that i've never heard tight-I-list pronounced that way before. I didn't even consider putting that way as an option.

Nike is an easy one for me.

 

Nigh-key. As in the Greek goddess.

 

Kids alone in my experience pronunce it Nike (without the key)

 

Adidas is tougher.

 

I've heard both Addy-Dass used, and the A-dee-dass way used too.

 

I use the former.

Mizuno - In the true spelling of the word, Mizuno is pronounced Me-zoo-no. In the Japanese language with very few exceptions, words sound as they are spelled. The hirigana spelling of Mizuno is three characters long - all pronounced. Mi - zu (su with a dakuten or "ten-ten" - becoming zu) and no.

On the commercials it sure sounds like there is a hushed "h" in Srixon - S(h)rixon.

Its deffinately Tite-I-list. listen to their commercial. As for Mizuno It IS DEFFINATELY mi-zoon-o. not myzoono

A bit off topic but it goes to pronunciation.

I am American/Italian. There is a resaurant near me that called Giacomo's. My wfie insists on calliing it by its phonetic pronunciation of gee-a-com0 and I by the italian pronunciation of jock-a-mo.

 

Ever watch one of those Ricola commercials. in the same commercial they proniunce it REE-ko-la and Ri-kola

Same here, think this is pretty much the standard midwestern American English way of pronouncing those brands, but every part of the world has their own way. For example, in Japan, they probably pronounce it MEE-Zoo-no

It is Japanese. Technically, there is no "Di" in Japanese. The corespsonding hirigana is a "Ji" sound"

 

The order is da, ji, zu, de, do.

Srixon is a funny name for a ball company but the new Z-Stars rock! Ok so me and my buddies were wondering how to pronounce this name too. Well if you google Srixon Pronuciation you get this thread as the number one hit! Further down the list is an article that talks about the company. According to the article the company name is pronounced as stated:

I've met the PGA tour rep for Nickent (graduate HS with his GF) and he pronounced it Nuh-Kent spoken very quickly. I think the word I'm saying and your Ni-Kent are the same pronunciation.

 

Another golf name I thought of is Jose Maria Olazabal.

 

I've heard O-La-Tha-Bul and I've also heard O-Laza-Ball and even the occassional I Lost my Ball! (j/k on the last one) ;)

I always thought it was Title---ist. Isn't that how the word is pronounced on their commercial? I've heard people in the past say "tight-list". Either way I know what they're talking about.
