Old dudes

Recommended Posts

EDIT: Much to my surprise, this thread got a lot more hostile responses than I ever could've anticipated. I suppose, as this isn't the first time my flippant style has irked some, I shouldn't be surprised. So, I want to apologize for upsetting people. I also want to apologize for obscuring what I think is a good point. That point being, I think the older one gets, for golf, flexibility and rhythm become more important than anything else. Plenty of the older guys I play with are still pretty strong, certainly strong enough for golf. But, they're stiff, and as a result, what little rhythm they may have possessed goes out the window and is replaced by a stiff and awkward lunge.

I'm 60. I have arthritis (bad enough to not be able to get results in a bone density test). I have damage in both knees (when I walk upstairs, my left knee sounds like an old porch swing). I have bone spurs in both shoulders (I have to quit playing for a month in order to rehab my left shoulder). Seven years ago, I avoided neck surgery (C6-C7 impingement) through physical therapy.

Last summer, I ditched weight training and took up Yoga. As a result, I'm more flexible now than I was when I was 12. I don't think anyone would argue against being more flexible. I think some may doubt they can be and so they don't even try. I'm not saying you have to be super flexible. I'm suggesting you get more flexible than you are now and lose less flexibility as you get even older.

So, here's the original post. I'm leaving it here so that the people who responded angrily don't look like total nutjobs (aren't I nice?).

I play with a lot of old dudes. In my view, their issues are largely the same: they are all rigid oafs. Most of their swings are stiff, short, variably shaky stabs at the ball. No rhythm, no grace, no timing, nothing that would ever make their wives want them to take Viagra ("go bother that girl teaching tennis lessons"). [edit: Hm, that mighta been the one that did it.] Yoga and ballroom dancing (at least, it's music you like, right?) are their only hope. What say ye?

Most of them would probably enjoy the game more if they played a set of tees at least one set forward than what they are playing now. Hell hath no grumpiness like an old man struggling from the same 6,400 yard set of tees he's played since 1975 and refuses to entertain the idea of moving forward from.

I'll be 65 next week. I play off a 13 handicap. I play the forward tees because I only drive the ball about 200 yds (occasionally roll one out to 220), but have a strong short game. I am courteous, have a sense of humor, hardly ever meet a player I don't like, play quickly and with proper etiquette. Most of my buddies are older and enjoy the game like I do. I am not sure if you are serious in your thread or just yanking our chains, but one day, YOU are going to be an old dude and the loss of flexibility will be your curse as well. That smile you see in my avatar is always there, good round or bad. Enjoy your youth, my friend, because it is temporary.

At PS, you've got to be kidding, aren't you? Are you really that shallow and out of touch with reality? You have got to be trolling, because nobody would say something this foolish and be serious at the same time.

I will be 66 in November, have played since I was young and can echo everything above. I help with our Caddy program that sends deserving kids to College, play with young, old and golfers my age and enjoy it! I don't critique good or bad golf swings or scores; golf can be very hard but it doesn't define who I am or who you are!!

One of them took the (w)hole $180 this morning?

First off, old age will do that to you. Second of all, the current crop of old dudes, (my dad's age) are from the generation where every one of these guys have worked their rear end's off from the time they were 12 or 13 years old. And by working, I mean manual labor at young ages and often continuing on throughout their careers. Having a college degree was not necessary to putting food on the table. Most of the guys worked in repetitive or heavy industrial manufacturing, the construction trades, farming, or other various non-desk jobs. All the types of jobs many in the political arena are clamoring for a return. There were no web or computer jobs or other various "thinking" jobs that there are now. There was no 6 week daddy paternity leave, no living in mommy and daddy's basement until your early 30s and no grabbing 20 bucks out of mom's purse to take the girl friend out on a date. Most guys from that generation grew up getting 2 or 3 meals a day and a couple outfits for school. That was it. You wanted a new ball glove you bought it yourself or you made due. Most went to school, played sports, and had some type of job. Nobody sat home during the summer and watch TV.

Beyond working 50 plus hours a week most of these guys did everything themselves. Fixed the lawn mower, fixed the car, repaired the house, etc. The didn't have one ounce of time to stretch, bike, go for a morning run, let alone have a gym membership. Gym's didn't even exist.

You live this kind of life, your body is destroyed by the time you are 60/65.

I am one of those "old guys". It never ceases to amaze me to watch my peers making a hard game that much more difficult by playing tees that are a bit out of their reach...or hitting on the cart girl...like they have a chance at either. For most of them it's simply an ego thing. You would think at our age they would know better. The other day the group in front of us hit their tee shots...all less than 200 yards...they had 230+ to the green and were waiting for the green to clear before they hit their next shots.

Not just old guys though...a lot of golfers play tees not suited to their ability. Yes, some will opine they are having fun...and that may be true for some...but hitting hybrids and fairway woods into most par 4's and on par 3's has to get tiresome after a while. Though I suppose one could save money since he wouldn't have to purchase any irons...

I started working at the age of 7...assistant paper boy, and would shine shoes at the local bars.

Sound like that description easily fits players of all ages. How about putting up a swing vid and we take a guess your age?

When you are younger 60+ seems like an impossibly long time away...until it isn't. Time doesn't fly, it rockets.
