9W...What to Expect?

What should I expect from getting a 9W to replace a hybrid? Less control? More distance?

I currently have, and like, a Heavenwood. It's easy to use.

I'm okay with my hybrids but I struggle to get the height I need with the 3 & 4 hybrids. The 5 hybrid is fine.

I'm going to try a 9W and wanted to know what experiences others may have had.

Thanks!

9w will fly high and should land soft. However, if you miss it thin than of course it will run out being a wood.

You should see a little more distance over a hybrid, which ain't a bad thing. And accuracy may increase if you are a better wood player than hybrid.

Can't wait to hear how it performs for you

Should be interesting. Many years ago I could all kind of shots with my Wilson Staff 5W (Real wood :taunt: )

Have the same thoughts about hybrids - consistency.

I've had several 9 woods - most success with one that has a heavier than stock shaft for more accuracy, a 40 in length, and good balance. I like 1 inch between gaps in fairways. 42 in 4 wd, 41 - 7 wd, 40 - 9 wood. The slightly heavier than stock shaft helps with swingweight but you may need an OEM also willing to help get close to a swingweight (or hot melt - a few grams, and lead tape).

Had a Divine 9 I liked - should have kept it - GBB/KK Silver 65.

Good point about the heavier swingweight.

9w may enter the moon's gravitational field... if it finds it way back to earth I'd imagine 20-25' of backspin.

I would expect to have to alert air traffic control every time I plan to hit it...

That's why you do not go with the stock shaft, which is typically 54g or so, unless you need that launch. Go with something heavier, slightly higher kick, slightly lower torque - that usually follows with the slightly heavier shaft (all dependent on you and preference) - and a shorter length shaft.

I am thinking that new Steelhead XR may be the ultimate 9 wood - look at that rounded sole - great for rough and bunkers, as well as ummm ... the fairway.

I would never play a 9 wood anyways haha but I was just saying that if I ever hit one I would expect it to launch extremely high. I play 75g HZRDUS Black in my 3 wood and still launch that fairly high.

That shouldn't be (too much of?) an issue for me: I'm a naturally low ball hitter

If you are a low ball hitter I wouldn't worry about low flying aircraft. You will probably find that you are very pleased with the trajectory. I have tried 2 of them over the years, a V Steel 9 wood that had a very light shaft but it spun like crazy and ballooned, I thought I would like it because it matched my 3 wood and Heaven wood. I picked up a XHot 2 9 wood with a slightly different shaft and it is great. It gets the ball up without tons of spin.

It's like any other club, if it fits your swing you will love it, if you get the wrong specs you wont. The loft is generally about the same as a 4 hybrid, so a modern 9 wood really doesn't have that much loft, usually 23*. An old school persimmon 5 wood usually had 22* for reference.

I have a used XR16 (shortened from 41.5 to 40 inches) coming my way from Callaway Pre-Owned. I'll see how that goes before I spend the money on a new Steelhead XR.

My set driver 3 wood set to 16 degrees heaven wood nine wood The reason I like the 9 wood is that it comes in with much elevation and hold the green Not a long hitter 9 wood goes about 160-165 for me also it is great out of the rough

There are You Tube reviews on this subject. Fairways will go father, higher and more forgiving vs. hybrid. Thinking of making a change myself. Driver, 5W, 7W instead of hybrid.

Exactly what I did with my 7w, cut it down to 41.5" threw in a L/L 80g shaft and it is by far the easiest to hit 3i of all time.

Think about the guys with an 11 Wood.

This is my first post and have been reading on this forum for quite some time but I can relate to the original post.

I am one of the guys with an 11 wood ... and a 13 wood too. I do get a lot of comments about all the headcovers in the bag but all of that comes to an end when they see me hit these woods. For some reason, I just have a huge problem with irons so I carry 8-SW and the rest are woods of some type. I live in Raleigh and my club just recently changed the greens which are now much faster than before so the par 3's required a high shot in order to keep it on the green and the 9-11-13 woods do just that.

Now, I'm every bit of a club Ho as anyone else here and I have spent more money than I care to think searching for the right bow and arrow, forgetting the Indian has far more to do with it. But, I have found a degree of success with these higher lofted woods that I just cannot achieve with the corresponding irons, that is until I can learn to hit the irons with similar results, but that's a whole different story.

I have tried everything and the 9 wood has been great for me as well as the 11 and 13.
