Rorys Putter this week

Recommended Posts

why would we assume he has a 14 club deal? other TM staffers dont.. DJ doesnt .. tiger obviously doesnt .. hes playing the Bstone ball ( if he ever plays) .. If Rory does its the worst move ever... How anyone can use those cheap feeling putters is beyond me.... before you flame.. I happen to love odyssey and bettinardi.. ... so not a cameron homer even though im currently using one.. (today lol)

agreed. locking into a 14 club CONTRACT leaves no room for flexibility.....i don't get that either

He played all 14 with Nike, and it looks like he is trying to do the same with TM. It doesn't make sense to me either. He needs to just find a putter that works regardless of brand name. If he can get his putter worked out (and maybe stay out of fescue) he'd be in good shape

When was the last time a top 5 player in the world switch putters so many times? I have lost count but isn't this the third putter in as many tournaments?

He switched out putters between rounds at the Travelers. He's all over the place.

The Nike quality was questioned a few times. With Nike it looked like their earlier clubs were very good and then faded...while the woods became very good with the Vapor fly pro after Rorys input.....rumor has it somoe Nike guys are at Taylor made and behind the design of the 2017 M2....not sure if that is a fact though

Is it the pursuit of money or pursuit of greatness for Rory?

I used to think it was undoubtedly the pursuit of greatness.

But the Nike switch, and now trying to play a Taylormade putter both lend to money being way more influential for him than winning tournaments.

Had he stuck w/ Titleist gear and not gotten so "hollywood" (funny analogy because I definitely don't mean Hollywood, Northern Ireland), I have to imagine he'd be on a more successful path as far as catching the legends of the game.

Just one mans opinion. He played incredibly well w/ Titleist woods and irons, vokey wedges, and his scotty putter. Now he looks more confused than a drunk Wrxer scanning the BST @ 1am.

I thought that it was the pursuit of greatness that mattered to him, not the money; according to his twitter spat with Elkington, he is worth $200 million. And this quote from the FedEx championship two years ago that got people's panties in a bunch:

“Luckily, that amount of money doesn't sort of mean much to me anymore," he said on Wednesday. "It will go in the bank and if I want to buy something nice, I will. It's nice to think that you could win $10 million this week, but that's not what excites me.”

sergio

it doesn't make a difference what putter rory uses - what manufacture makes it - he is a streak putter. one of the best strokes on tour without yielding the consistent results he needs. the difference between tiger in his glory years and players now is he had the hot putter every week - and could run away and hide...it wasn't just his distance.

I cannot believe they had to stuff that "TP" badging into the back of these putters.

It makes them look so Wal-Mart.

"How can we f*ck up an otherwise nice looking putter?"

"Hmm let's put a Tour Preferred logo on a putter that isn't preferred by hardly anyone on tour"

"No there isn't room to write Tour Preferred in that small cavity..."

"TP in a large cheap font?"

"Brilliant!!!"

Agreed. A clean Taylormade T logo would have looked much better.

Agreed also!

Yes, but locking into wearing size small mock turtle neck contract doesn't leave room for flexibility either....Money talks.

Well if Rory is about the $$, TM could have made it much more worth his while to sign for all 14, than 13. Not saying real numbers, but for 10 years a 13 club deal could have been worth 60M, and a 14 club deal worth 80M. He might have figured eh what the hell, ONE of their putters has to work, and it's making the $/club he signs for worth more. Maybe he even thought TM would make a special "Rors Proto" putter for him or something eventually. He's obviously still searching for "the one".

I said the same thing to some people around here. They said I was stupid and he's great enough to play anything.

He is great but it does make you wonder. Wouldn't anyone play their best with they like looking at and feel comfortable playing. He used to brag on how much he loved his Titleist driver. Definitely seemed more comfortable with that equipment. I believe he won more with the Titleist equipment if I'm not mistaken.

from the Irish Times "I've been on Tour 10 years ... it's very rare that you get really excited about your equipment, but I feel like it's a new chapter in my life with a lot of stuff going on, but I really feel with the new equipment, as well, it's hopefully going to take me to that next level," said McIlroy, who will use TaylorMade M2 woods, prototype blade irons and the TP5x ball. Im still looking but haven't found anything to say he is contracted to use a TM putter.
Correct. He will use doesn't mean that his what his contract says he has to use. That's reporting what he used to start the first tournament after the announcement. It also doesn't mention the wedges, so it's not an all inclusive list. We very rarely get to see the exact language of a Tour player's contract - especially one that is that high profile. None of those articles talk about contract language, so this back and forth we have going on is never going to be resolved. Regardless, he's trying to use a TM putter even though it isn't working for him, which is a pretty good indication that there is pressure from TM (because of his contract or otherwise) to play all 14 TM clubs.
im sure they pressure him to use all 14, but im sure the contract has some flexibility built in.....every article i read, mentioned wedges, woods and ball....like i said earlier, i am not saying I KNOW anything. Im just quoting multiple sources.....

From golf.com, 9 May

"TaylorMade announced today that four-time major winner Rory McIlroy has signed a deal to play a full bag of the company's gear, as well as the TP5x ball...He is still working with the Tour and product development teams to find the right TaylorMade putter but will eventually put one in his bag."

From golfdigest.com, 9 May

"...McIlroy has entered into a “long-term” contract with TaylorMade. The pact, announced on Tuesday, is for the full bag plus the golf ball..."

From espn.com, 10 May

"...signing a long-term deal to use a TaylorMade bag, 14 of the company's clubs..."

There's multiple sources that all say 14 clubs. That being said, a 14 club deal seems pretty stupid right now. I would want that flexibility, especially with my putter.

where? I only see one.... full bag doesn't include putter. even on the TM website it says noting about him using a TM putter as part of the deal....he can if he wants but he isn't contracted to do so it seems

How does full bag not include the putter? I haven't seen a single source that says it's a 13 club deal. As stated earlier, he said he would continue to use his Odyssey until he found a TM putter he was comfortable with. He's clearly using a TM putter before he's even comfortable since he switches every 2 rounds, and the TM website can't say which putter he uses because it's different every other day. Eventually TM will just make him a 009 and call it a day.

once again, not contracted to do so, the putter is by choice from every source out there...

I still haven't seen a definitive source saying his contract is for only 13 clubs. You sure this is the hill you want to die on man? Seems like an odd thing to be so passionate about arguing.

While I understand your point, show me anyone that would turn down $100 million to use the equipment from one of the undisputed industry leaders. It would never happen. He made the same call anyone of us would make and he'll get used to his new sticks soon enough.

Who cares what his TM contract says! doesnt matter what kind of putter he uses his putting stroke looks like s*** right now.

People want to talk about how switching to the Scotty M1 at the end of last year made him a better putter. Could have been that or the new coach and stroke. Stamping "Cameron" on his putter won't make the ball go in the hole. He's gotta get to working on that stroke.

He's grasping for anything right now that gonna give him comfort on the greens. I hope he finds it soon, he's too good of a golfer to be struggling this much.
