Stab the front thigh with the club??

I recently got a lesson after losing my ability to make a divot and compress the ball.

 

The teacher said that I was too inside on my downswing, resulting in a flipping to catch up. I also use a lot of side bend due to that.

 

He had me focus on bringing the butt end of the club into my front thigh. "Stab the front thigh". He said that it would put in the club in the correct delivery position. He said "eliminate using the hands, get the handle left". The swing is an arc from overhead.

 

To me, it seemed like the club head was way outside of the plane, but he said that was an illusion. He said it was coming back on the same plane as the back swing.

 

Doing it made for nice divots. But I kept pulling the ball. He said I was coming over the top, using my front shoulder too much. How do I stab my front thigh without coming over the top??

 

Doing the drill, I feel like something was way off on my understanding of what he wanted me to do.

 

I watched him hit the ball. Older gentleman, nice divots, great compression, hit nice shots. Guy could really hit!

 

So I am totally confused. This position seems wrong, but looking at his students hit they were amazing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

A little about myself. 8 Handicap. Follow Monte and Malaska a lot. Tried the GG pivot, failed miserably at it.... I tend to hit a high ball, and shorter than I would like. Miss is left. Strongest part of my game is my driver.

Idea of directing/pulling the handle while taking my hands out of the swing as a swing thought would be a disaster for me, but who knows for you.

I think this is just like Malaska. Your never gonna stab yourself because your rotating.

Hardy's latest book on Impact has that as a drill for the Right Inward Throw release. It's a feel I've had some success with.

I went though the same thing with the club head being way outside. To show me that it was just an illusion the instructor had me hold the club where the club head looked way outside and dropped a coin from the club head and it landed inside the target line.

 

Ever since I got over this mental block i've been making solid contact and haven't had a fat shot since.

Most instructors instruct that way and it means you need to adapt to them.

If you cant, you be confused due to the advice given may not be correct and even if it is, (left shoulder) he didnt tell you what to do.

Most water is wet except when it is dry but you may think it's wet so how can it be dry and even if it is someone said it's wet but didn't tell you it is dry.

I really like this swing thought. I have always felt this is especially true with wedges and the feeling of swinging left.
