Will Jordan pass Jack?

IMO Jack's 18 is going to be one of those untouchable records like Byron Nelson's streak, Wilt's 100 points in a game, DiMaggio's 56 etc. Someone will come close (Tiger, Kobe etc) but those records are not going down.

Jack had I think 8 majors at the time of his 30th bday. I think Jordan has a good chance to equal that. It's the 10 after his 30th bday that is going to be tough to match. Jordan's game is built for longevity, but family, injuries, and age are so tough to overcome (as evidenced by Tiger),

My guess is Jordan gets 10-14 winning his last somewhere around his 43rd bday. That's 7 to 11 total in 20 years. Feels about right.

Way too early for all that. In he get's through the 12th at Augusta then we'll see. I believe that whoever is going to threaten Jack's record he has to dominate at Augusta, the major with the weakest overall field.

JS has the potential for that, Augusta fits his eye, for 17 holes. It's just that one itsy bitsy, tiny hole that has Jordan's number, so far.

Haha, I wrote tiny hole.

Jack and Tiger had the intimidation factor that JS does not. Jordan is more of a Tom Watson, great short game and even better putter. There are only 3 golfers all time with double digit major championships. I would predict Jordan ends up in the 7-8 major wins category, which is a pretty great place to be......

No Jordan won't pass Jack, highly doubtful he will catch Tiger. Probably an 8-10 major guy..

One thing Jordan has with his homemade swing is he doesn't appear to be snapping his knees at impact and destroying his back with an 85% (pull my leg) swing like Tiger did. Hopefully he doesn't go looking for distance, but does improve on accuracy. With the turtle like pace that he changes equipment it doesn't appear he would be jumping for an entire equipment/ ball contract. A mistake many have made that derailed their careers. Only two come to mind that change didn't ruin them Tiger and Brooks K haven't missed a beat when they changed. Others have wrecked their careers by changing for long periods of time to a few permanently by chasing that guaranteed pay day. Amazing Jordan doing OK with that Titleist ball while Rory still struggles with distance control with the best ball he has ever used TP5.

People saying 8-10 majors is silly...people saying he will pass jack is silly...the truth is he has 3 majors in 3 years, could have reasonably been 5....there is no basis for the 8-10 guess and there is no reasonable guess that he can catch Jack...he has incredible grit and talent...and the thing that puts him above so many is his ability to get it done....Tiger was never that accurate with his driver but got it done around the greens....Jordan can pass Jack, Jordan could also never win a major again....

As most know, Jack holds the most prestigious record in golf - 19 second place finishes in majors.

Jordan now has 3 runner-ups, while Jack only had 1 at the same age. Can anything stop Jordan from becoming the GOAT?

Sure there is. look at historic records of players doing what hes doing at his age. there are 3 Jack, Tiger and now Jordan. Let that sink in for a second. In 100 years those are the 3 to accomplish what he has at his age. is it so wild to think that hes entering his prime and he might add to those #s? revisit this post when hes 30 and see how you feel about it then

I guess I don't understand your response....you highlighted my "no basis for the 8-10 guess" but then proceeded to say our basis is there are only 3 people including himself that have done what he's done.....again that doesn't mean he will win anymore or it could mean that he will pass Jack....saying 8-10 is still a baseless guess, there is no data except what has been pulled out of people's tail end....the argument is fun to have but so far away from any real comparison it's silly to throw out numbers.....using solely your argument you agree that the 8-10 number is crazy and by your logic he should be between jack and tiger or closer to one than the other or etc....

I predict Jordan will win several more majors, it would be awesome for him to surpass Jack....I think if he continues on the same path we will see him have several multiple major wins....he's had 3 in the last three years if the pattern continues he will be at Jack's record right before his 39th birthday....can't wait to watch

How can anybody reasonably predict such a large question based on such a small sample size (years on tour)? Well, seeing as his mechanics are pretty benevolent to this overall health, his PGA Tour career could take him easily into his mid 40's, maybe beyond. Trying to guess what takes place during a 20 year span, just based on 5 years is pretty tough, but I guess if you make assumptions, could be done.

It's somewhat reasonable to assume his success could at least be a constant linear, meaning for every 5 years he plays, he could be expected to win 3 Majors, and ~14-15 wins overall. This would lead to a reasonable assumption that as long as nothing drastic happens, he would be on pace to win around 12-15 Majors, and approximately 80-90 times overall. This would make him one of the best all time, as he could potentially stack up most wins on tour ever, and be top 3 in Major wins.

Now... can a person keep up that kind of pace for 20+ years? That's the real debate.

I've watched and played golf for several decades. Heard countless young guys who's career's start on fire be called the "next Jack", or the "next Tiger".

Then life happens. Relationships. Families. (Inevitable) injuries. Swing changes (also inevitable - a 40 year body simply can't have the same swing as a 20 year old). The pressures of money and fame (yes, they are pressures that some of the best have succumbed to).

It is actually easier for talented guys to have a good start - in your early 20s your body is great, and 100% of focus can be on golf. Sustaining that fire over the course of 20 or 25 years is exceedingly difficult. Which is why there are so few Tigers and Jacks.

For the record, jack was in the hunt in every single major for the entirety of the 1970s...

5 times he didn't have a chance to win...

That is absurd...

Love ur op premise btw

Jack could've won 40 or 10 but he won 18....

This should explain the absurdity of how dominant jack was...

It is almost offensive to be that good...

To answer the question that wasn't asked. He almost certainly won't pass Jack's 18 major wins, but the percentage isn't zero.

Of course, I thought Pete Sampras with 14 Grand Slams was safe and he's been passed TWICE. (and could get caught a third time)

I as well am 99% certain he doesnt sniff Jacks #. What I was contending was the bolded part above that i quoted. To say there is no basis to him getting to 7,8 or 10 is ludicrous based on the #s hes put up so far. Since WW2 guys who start out like this dont fall off the planet especially guys with insane short game and putting. Hes not Jack or Tiger and thats not a bad thing. 10 wins 3 majors before 24. ill revisit this question in 6-7 years but ive seen enough of him to know that 8 or 9 majors isnt out of the question or crazy

I won a bet at the club this weekend with a 63 year old member who swore to god that Jack had a missed cut at the british open in the 70s. He was pissed and lost 20$ to me. I know Jacks records so well as i absolutely love, love golf history. I then doubled down and told him from 1963 to 1980 he never finished worse that T6. He scoffs and says BS!!! "I remember he struggled in a few" " thats impossible" " Even Tiger hasnt done that!!" his wife looks it up on her phone and says "George, the young man is right" Guy was furious. He wanted to play a 9 today with me to try and get the 60$ back. Jacks record in the majors in the 70s is as you said criminally underrated. Id bet my life that never happens again insane video game #s

I think he will pass Jack in masters victories. That's a pretty bold prediction I'm aware. Jordan's got a feel for that place. Should have had 2 green jackets by now. He probably has 30 more to play in. His record is pretty good there.

Whats not to understand? you said there is no basis to say he wins 8-10 and I show you empirical evidence that says exactly that. pretty simple really

And, at our darkest hour, he will pilot a spaceship, of his own design, and destroy the earthbound comet that would have spelled our doom.
