Spieth moves the needle as much as Tiger

Anybody who truly thinks Spieth "moves the needle" like Tiger just started watching golf 2 weeks ago.

Well, to say definitively 'no' is foolish too. He's 4-5 years into his career. Does he stack up in terms of moving the needle? No, I don't think so, not yet. But that he's already in the conversation is significant. Gonna have to bump this thread in 20 years to have a more definitive debate.

Doesn't always make sense.

No golfer will move the needle like Tiger did. Tiger was the right person in the right place at the right time. All the stars were aligned for Tiger; a stagnant tour with no dominant player, a sport with a 'rich white guy'image, bland unathletic fields, the internet and social media about to explode. Tiger was the perfect package, and he played the role perfectly. No matter how well Spieth plays he won't generate the same hype as Tiger.

TW was in the *wrong* place.

He just took it upon himself to beat the living crap out of everybody and every obstacle in front of him.

Fuzzy and his ilk was the first vaporization ; )

The rest of the establishment was next.

Then, new heights, new definitions of greatness, new expectations and possibilities.

Whew!! Good thing you stopped there. I thought for a minute that you were going to throw out the Ghandi card.

Especially when you have those who feel that he either hasn't accomplished much OR isn't dominant due to him being middle of the pack in distance wise(false premise btw) . Does Federer have the Becker like serve? Nope but plenty hard enough...

YJS is fun to watch for me and that's all I'm concerned with.

I wish you people singing Hosannas for Woods would quantify "moved the needle" in some rational manner or even explain what in the plueperfect hell "moving the needle" means! Give a rational argument about what Tiger "did for golf" that isn't getting done currently every weekend on the Tour. Yep, I was around and was/am a Tiger fan but I've been around long enough to know there are no "unbreakable" records in sport--none, and if not Spieth then someone sometime will surpass Woods.

Quantify?

17 PGA Tour wins and a career Grand Slam of Majors in 2 years.

Thats more than Rory has done in 9 full years.

But it's not just the accomplishments. It was the aura that surrounded him. He was like a rock star. The only sports figures close were Jordan and Ali.

And then he f'd it all up.

Ahhh, $hit happens ; )

How bout this to cheer you up,

In 13 months, from 8/99-8/00, TW won as many PGA Tour events and Majors as Rory has won in 9 years.

Yeah, but Xander Schauffele has won more PGA Tour events in the last month than Tiger in the last 3, almost 4, years.

Funny how selective use of dates works.

Nice try-comparing someones entire career to date to someone else's 13 months is not selective use of dates. Your example is comparing to a guy that is not playing-not to someone that is being celebrated as a top player.

Tiger made everyone care about golf even if they didn't play or watch golf. My dad hated golf but every Sunday he'd ask how Tiger was doing. Move the needle means that he reached people outside of the regular golf fan base and got these non-fans to become invested in his performance each week.

That and $5,00 will get you a cup of coffee at Mocha Madness any day of the week! It doesn't matter that non-golfers "loved" Wood, the point is the competition today is just fine, the purses higher and eventually as the day follows the Tiger nighttime, someone, dedicated, talented, with morals somewhere way North of "the needle mover" will eclipse the records but if you want to cherry pick statistics based on fewest years, most majors in "X" number of years, days, months, or minutes be my guest.

I have the feeling that the only moving "needle" on this thread is the one the Spieth haters are wielding to prop up what is, essentially, a "has been"--one that should've been in his prime right now.

You are missing the point. The "needle" has nothing to do with is the competition today fine. It has nothing to do with lifetime records or cherry picked dates.

The needle is the "wow factor" that the individual brings. For some reason when Tiger hit great shots there was more of a wow in the eyes of the fans-and Feherty. :) Same as why Jordan(not Spieth but Michael) was the needle-and Ali-and a Michael Jackson. They might not have moved the needle for you but they did for waaaaay more folks than anyone else.

Tiger played a role in getting the purses and golf to the point it is today. I happen to be a fan of both Tiger and Spieth, you on the other hand are clearly a Tiger hater and refuse to acknowledge the contributions he's made to golf.

Moving the needle,

Cheery pick stats? How about.....

TW has more victories and majors than the "dedicated, talented, with morals "

Rory, Spieth, DJ, and Day

Combined.

In fact, get this,

Tiger Woods has more PGA Tour wins AND Majors than

Dustin Johnson,

Jordan Spieth

Hideke Matsuyama

Rory Mclilroy

Sergio Garcia

Jon Rahm

Jason Day

Henrik Stenson

Alex Noren

Brooks Koepka

Rickie Fowler

Combined. That's the entire OWGR top 12 golfers.

My wife's grandma, who grew up and lived her whole life in the middle of a farm town, never played golf or knew nothing about the game tuned in and watched any time Tiger was on TV. That folks, is moving the needle.

My mother in law is the same, never picked up a club, and still regularly watches golf in spite of Tiger's absence.

Not at Tiger's level but for today's game,he most certainly a needle mover....very polarizing....kinda Tebow-esque with FAR MORE success obviously.

I enjoy watching JS play golf, but to compare him to TW as far as needle moving is concerned is a bit premature.

Jordan may not be the same needle but I think we know the needle on Jordan's moral compass works wayyyy better than Tiger's.

Not disagreeing but it's about the same image as we had of Tiger at that age.

Surely the OP was only saying that JS moves GolfWRX Forum members' needles?

Or....something like that.

I'll go on record to state that he doesn't move my needle. Never has and probably never will.

lol ... tiger's off days moved the needle more than today's players best days ... i watch golf no matter who's playing/winning and think today's game is in fine shape/form, but anyone who thinks today's players moved any needle as much as tiger is simply ignorant at best ... and morals got zero to do with it ... nobody quits watching sports because of morals ... try to be honest at least once in your life ...

I agree. A golfer like TW comes along once a generation, if that. I was never a big fan of his, but you can't argue with his sheer domination on the golf course.

I believe Tiger changed golf for ever. Unless the sport goes through a serious downturn I don't see anyone ever being able to dominate the tour the way Tiger did. With clubs and balls at their theoretical maximums and physical conditioning of the players being what it is, I don't think someone can have enough of a physical advantage that they could win consistently the way Tiger and Jack did.

I don' think Spieth at his best can consistently beat Rory, DJ, Day, Fowler, Koepka and the rest of the Tour when they are playing their best.

Per post above:

Golf my friend isn't played at "your best".... that's the beauty of the game; not having it but grinding out a score...

But your assumption is based on what might I ask? YJS is hitting more greens and is a better putter than anyone on your list....hence birdies per round leader also.... So this machismo position of "they're all better because they're longer" stance is overplayed.

I'm not saying they are better because they are longer I'm saying that as good as Jordan is, he has to play his game at his best to beat any of those guys playing at their best. He can grind out a victory like the Open every once in a while but that doesn't get him to 14 or 18 Major victories.
