St Andrews 3 Day Pass- How Much Golf Is Possible

TW33

Recommended Posts

Question about the 3 day pass for a single playing in May. Do you think I will be able to just walk up to the course (New Course, Jubilee, Eden) and go right off? I want to get as much golf in as I can, so I'm wondering if I'll be able to tee off at like 6:30AM and then bounce course to course throughout the day? Or is it more crowded/kind of limited to only 2 rounds per day?

Late May you have a lot of sunlight available. Assuming you tee off in an early group (before 7:00am), 54 holes a day should be pretty doable. The tough one is going to be squeezing into a mid-day group at ~11:30. If you can get out for your second round by 1:00, finish by 5, start round #3 by 6:00, finish by 10:00.

It should be easy to get out very early and in the evening - but your mid-day time is going to be the toughest.

I can't wait. I'm just hoping that there are enough twosomes or threesomes that I'll be able to jump in with. I'm not picky on which course I play, so that should help too.

I was there the end of April once. I played 3 rounds each day with EASE. I play fast and actually did not get held up much so my first round of the day was under 3 hours. Played the New and Jubilee allot but also mixed in the shorter courses depending on how busy a course was. I was not even playing from sun up to sun down to do it.

The only issue is how you get the Castle course into the mix as it is a bit more out of the way. I am not a fan of this course, but it is included in the pass.

i was in st. andrews last monday. we got to the course around 9:30 am and were able to get off on the new course around 9:50. and with our name on the list for the old course went off at 4:20pm

When you mention your name on list for old course. Did you just walk up early that morning to starter and put name in?

Have a great time.

I've always gone over with these kind of aspirations...but I've learned that I just can't walk and carry 54 holes a day for 3 days, and day three is a lot more fun if I pace myself through it.

But your 54 hole vision can be screwed up by a couple factors - like you get a 10:00am time on the Old Course, which leaves you not enough time to play elsewhere before you go out, and can easily take 4.5 hours, so you can't get out on the New until ~3:00 - 3:30, which has you home by 7:00, but not teeing off again until maybe 7:30, and then you're not going to finish. First world problems...

I'm taking a full day just for the old course (4 total days of playing at St. Andrews). I don't want to waste the 3 day pass, so I'm going to check the tee sheets the night before and then use one full day just for the Old Course. I'm trying to get my monies worth for that 3 day pass haha

It does sound good in principle and you can easily hit a jackpot weather week in May, t-shirts, sun, no breeze, 16+ hours of daylight. If you get that scenario your in business.

Counter point however, you have watched the Open Championship on TV, you are aware what the weather here can do when it feels like it. 18 holes in driving wind and rain is a pain in the arse, never mind 36 or 54. Don't set your sights too high, just take it as it comes.

Have a great time!

Either way, i'm playing at least 36. Bringing two pairs of shoes for that reason alone.

As single your best bet is to line up EARLY in the morning. People show up at 2am to line up for a good tee time. When I was there my plan was to line up every morning until I got a good tee time on the Old Course. I was going to line up at 4am, but could not sleep so was first in line at about 3am dressed in all my gear. About 4:30am other people started to show up. Being first in line I actually got paired up with some guys in the first tee time of the day.

My opinion was that I could lose a little a sleep to play the Old Course.

I played 54 at St Andrews my last two days + 1 morning at Carnoustie teeing off a bit later in the morning 9:30ish and again at 4ish both days

One day Carnoustie 10:30 am slowish round driver picked me up just after 3:30 was back in St Andrews Around 4:15 Jumped on Jubille right away finished as dusk was setting in. Even though you could tell the sun was setting I still had time to walk to a cab in city center take a ride back to the Fairmont and watch the sun actually set from my hotel room closer to 9:45. The sun just kinda lingers around for longer than you would expect.

Next Day New course at 9:20ish and Old Course at 4:20 we had a couple hours between rounds finished up around 8:30ish

I would imagine if you go out early around 6:30 the first round would be pretty quick and you could realistically get in 54. I will tell you that eventually it takes its toll on your body and after 72 holes in 2 days I was hurting but it was my last two days there so no biggie, but had I been staying there longer and playing more playing that much golf in a short period of time would have been regretful to my scores.

The 3 day ticket is something like 200 pounds Jubilee, and New are 75 pounds, Castle a little more Eden a little less so around 3 rounds you break. Even if you only do 36 a day for 3 days you are well ahead

Also not sure what your other plans are but dont discount the other courses in the vicinity Crail is worth playing and Kingsbarns while expensive is pretty spectacular.
