I think you nailed it on Riverside.    I dislike holes 11-17, but the rest of the course is pleasing.   

Except 8.   It's brutal.  ?

It's just not a fun hole to play - it forces a layup (boring) and the layup area is so narrow it's ridiculous. Even with a good layup you're still looking at 150 uphill into the green on your 3rd. They should rework that entire hole, probably need to remove some trees around the water and plant more trees elsewhere.

Mission Del Lago’s turf is in absolutely great shape tee to green. Greens are smooth and speedy. Fairways are plush and consistent. 
 

They were saying their play was up a lot since Republic closed and this has allowed extra revenue to feed course upkeep. 
 

Bunkers still need some desperate TLC but the meat of the course is in great shape and I hope this is the beginning of MDL improving consistently because I love that layout.

I played Mission Del Lago last week and I never thought I'd say this - But it's currently the best course they have. Conditions are fantastic like you said and there are some really nice holes. It's very challenging from the back tees as well, about 7000 yards.

Cedar Creek is in fantastic shape right now but the par 3 are on temp tee boxes as the new super has leveled them out.

Cedar Creek is like a week from being super pure. They’re gearing up for the South Texas Match Play & San Antonio Open. Two big events back to back to showcase Cedar Creek.

played today and greens were true and fast but seemed to have a real light coating of sand in some places

Unfortunately i could not play in the SA Open this week but I did play in the South Texas Match Play last weekend and Cedar was absolutely pure. 

 

They sanded to get the greens faster for this weekend, sand the greens, no mow for a couple days and the blade stands up then you can cut it tighter and roll it. They were probably a solid 10-10.5 last weekend which is more than enough to defend those tiered greens when its blowing 40 MPH... lol

In SA for most of two weeks leading up to christmas.  What's in good shape right now? Wanting to play the Quarry(never played) and Canyon Springs(nearby and enjoy the layout).

 

Have also never played Brack before, and have played La Cantera Palmer and contemplating playing it again--unless I should try resort course instead.

At the low price (about $70), you get six free rounds throughout the year and a free round for your birthday.  Level II is something like $350 and includes 10 free rounds along with the other six plus your birthday round.  It’s a total no-brainer.  
 

and generally speaking, most of the courses are in VERY good condition considering they are public municipal courses.

I agree it's a good deal and they do a good job with the courses. The only issue now is Covid-19, because apparently now everyone and their brother (and their friends) play golf. The Alamo Trail courses are absolutely packed solid. I used to get out in the afternoon by myself for practice rounds all the time, I would just show up and go play. No chance of that now. 

 

I even gave up on going to San Pedro driving range in the evenings. I used to go regularly at 7-8 PM and get in some practice, it was never busy. Now you can't even get a parking spot.

Olmos closing only going exacerbate the issue too. 
 

Played Quarry this week. Greens slow as s***, per the usual.

Last I heard, Quarry will be shutting down in May or June for a greens renovation, so our course supply will drop further.

I have the city die hard membership so I don’t really notice those things, except I did get an invite to Canyon Springs and was a little shocked to find the 12:10 tee time was $85! I remember when CS was $59. 
 

I suppose it is supply and demand with Olmos closed now and dispersing those 70k+ rounds. When quarry closes that’ll be fun lol

Don’t try to play a twilight round at Cedar this weekend if you want to play fast or finish. Both days the ACGT Tour is out there.
