Fair Oaks Ranch will provide you a more traditional private experience and has 2 solid courses with decent practice facilities. 

 

Not knowing your budget, Cordillera is in Boerne too, but that is very private and very expensive. 

Very helpful thank you. Cordillera is going to be out of budget, but I think Fair Oaks will likely be what we're looking for.

My game (sharpened here in SA) definitely travels very well. I demolish courses everywhere else, so I see your point. Courses here as a whole are just harder than elsewhere I’ve been. I think that’s valid.

This is true for me as well....If you can score at courses like Cedar Creek, Silverhorn and the old Pecan Valley you can hold your own at other courses for sure.

This is another reason ...growing up in Corpus Christi it would be nothing to play in 20mph winds, and now playing in San Antonio when the wind kicks up I know i have an edge on my buddies.

Silverhorn reportedly has the most lost balls of any course in town. I can believe it. Your tee game has to be on point there, and even then you're only hitting the driver maybe 3-4 times in a round.

I shot 67 at horn once hitting no drivers until #18 and then making eagle to shoot -5 haha. I agree you don’t need driver there at all really

Can anyone comment on the conditions at Tapatio Springs?  I have a chance to join a group going in March, and last I heard (7-8 yrs ago maybe) Tapatio was in pretty rough shape, but a new investor bought it with plans to fix it up.  Did that happen?  I don't want to leave the wife home with the baby by herself all weekend to go play a course that isn't in good shape.

Ha!  That almost reminds me of the scale on my hot water heater.  It goes Low, dot, A, B, C, Very Hot.  And all the recommendations say to set it to 120 deg.  WTF??

 

So you're saying if I go, it should be for the camaraderie - the course isn't enough by itself?

I haven't played Tapatio in about a year but no, I would not commit to the trip for the course itself...

Making a weekend tee time without a member is going to be rough. You could call the shop and ask for a Sunday afternoon after 1pm tee time nicely and they may just let you play unaccompanied.

They were around $250-$300 last time i stayed there.  I think you can still get a golf room package to get them a little cheaper.

Yes I want to say canyon was something like 200-250 and oaks was pushing 300-350.

 

the closer to the Texas open you get the more proud they get.

Course conditions update:

 

San Pedro is scruffy 

Oaks is in great shape. 
Canyons is glass and grass is waking ip

Silverhorn was in good shape today.

Small Cedar Creek update...

 

I can't see what exactly they are doing but they have had a full size bull dozer on the left side of #10 for three days now.

 

Also here they are with a bobcat working on the green side bunker...it looks like they may be flattening out the green side lip.

Awesome, looks like they are widening and leveling some of those fairways on the Back 9. Let's hope that's the case.

Played TPC oaks course and it was definitely above 350 all in. The course is in fantastic condition. They leave the grass, including greens, a little long so it all grows in nicely. They also had a lot of devilish pins - not sure if that’s normal or they’re trying to funnel play to small sections of the green. I also got to play Barton Creek on this trip and TPC was far superior, though also more expensive.

Devilish pins is the norm but I have noticed lately the rotation has been confined to the same 3 spots in obscure and lower traffic areas so they are definitely doing a little funneling of golfers and traffic for sure. Did you also play Canyons? Very good condition and also well worth it.

I was fortunate to get the rounds in I did considering 2 kids were in-tow on the trip. I’m sure we’ll return and can hopefully play that one as well. On TPC, we only had 1 pin in the middle of the green.

I haven't played TPC in years. I would love to go back and play both of the courses, but the prices are just astronomical. Years ago the Stay & Play was only about $100 more than the room rate. They also sometimes ran specials for locals and you could just go up there and play during the week for $80-100. I don't know how to even play there now, refuse to pay $300+. Please someone who's a member invite me. Haha
