Bag set ups for the 90-100

Recommended Posts

Didn't want to thread jack this thread ( http://www.golfwrx.c...our-bag-set-up/) but after reading it I see a number of folks whose top of the bag looks like this (albeit limited responses so far)

Driver

3w

5w

3 or 4hy

Irons starting at a 5i.

So....why the 5w and why 2 hybrids?

Someone made a comment in the other thread that longer irons require higher swing speeds. Between my Zepp sensor (I know, not the most accurate) and what I've seen at simulators at some stores, I'm between 90-105. I know it's a 15mph difference but I take it with a grain of salt due to the calculations of the ss and not a reputable measuring device (like a trackman)

I hit my 4i great when I pure it. I hit it decently when it's a mis-hit. I top it occasionally as well as hitting it fat. I don't have the most consistent swing out there...

Is there really a swing speed that one should have before stepping to a 4i or higher? I can't hit my hybrid well and tend to move to my 4i as I tend to hit it better. I'm thinking of ditching the hybrid for a 3i because I just don't have confidence, but wonder if it will hut my game not having a hybrid. Thoughts??

My driver swing speed had never exceed 108 MPH even when I was young.

I used to carry a driver a 3 wood and then 1-SW and a putter. Hitting the linger iron require certain swing speed to get the golf ball airborne, but it does not require a superman to hit long irons well. Back in the days the 2 iron carried about 195 to 200 yards which today's 5 iron ( lofted like 4+ iron of the old irons ) with the new golf balls could do the same, if not longer.

I recall I used the long irons , the 2,3,and 4 proficiently and the Uno quite well..

Today , my swing speed hoovers around 100 MPH and I could still carry a 2 iron , but the hybrids are replacing the 1 and the 2 in the bag simply because they are so much easier to use.

So the question is not if someone could swing a long iron but, if someone could swing a long iron well throughout the 18.

I like to walk the golf course, at my age, if asked to deck a one iron on the 18th fairway..... I'd most likely failed the test.

Yeah I'm one of those guys the OP is describing. My transition is set up as follows:

5W Baffler 18.5° LTD Rogue Black 200-210y

4Hy King F6 22° Red Tie 185-195y

5i Z745 25° KBS Tour 120 S 170-180y

So gapping should be fine in theory, but they're all at slightly different face angles which might be something to solve.

Ultimately, in a round I'll use these clubs very sparingly. Didn't pull 5w, 4hy, or 5i yesterday. And subbed in the 4i last week (for one tee shot..and it didn't go well).

Since going back to the Z 745 (and practicing/playing only once a week), I've developed severe control problems with my 5W 4Hy setup. Even mid irons hook on a regular basis. When I over adjust, big pushes. When I have a spare afternoon I might hit the range and mess around with the loft settings. I have a couple heavier shafts I might try too.

My driver SS is 97, 6 hcp. I carry D, 3W, 5W, 4h, 5-PW, 52, 56, 60. My carry distances in the long end of my bag is:

D 240yd

3W 225yd

5W 205yd

4h 190yd

5i 180yd

I use a 4h and 5w rather than long irons because I hit them much higher, meaning they stop faster with better overall distance control than long irons. Andy I think they are marginally easier to hit.

I do miss having long irons for "punch out" shots, but I've been getting pretty good at it with a 3 wood....

I guess that makes sense to me. I just have no confidence with hybrids or woods. Which is why I'm thinking of bagging a 2/3i. Perhaps I'm actually swinging faster than I think? At least I'd like to think so! Lol.

A 2i/3i is going to be massively less forgiving than a hybrid, and immensely less forgiving than a fairway wood. If anything you'd be a little better off bagging a UDI with a graphite shaft, but even then, the CG is so much closer to the face than with a hybrid and wood, that any type of miss-hit means a low knuckle ball flight.

Before you go buying new equipment and going nuts I'd first just try choking down a bit on the hybrid/woods. Also, practice makes perfect and you need to teach your brain how to hit the longer clubs or golf is going to be a struggle. Go to the range and start with the hybrid, choking up literally 4-5 inches, swing 50% so the ball goes like... 100 yards. Then hit maybe 75% or til it goes maybe 130-140 yards. Then... choke up less and less still going 3/4 speed. After enough days and reps, you will get better at striking the longer clubs, I guarantee it.

you're right...but in typical wrx ho fashion, I want to go nuts on buying new clubs! lol but that is sound advice. my wallet thanks you!

you mention striking longer clubs better. I hit my 4i/5i much much better and with greater consistency than the 3w or 3hy. I know...it's not the arrow, it's the.....that being said I'm very comfortable with my driver and long irons. i'll give it a try with just hybrid and 3w going 50%-75%.

I know when I hit the 3w and 3hy well they go forever. problem for me is 1 outta 20 do what I want them to do. where as most of the time i get good contact (not perfect) with my 4i.

Golf is an odd sport. I've owned many hybrids and somehow having that right combo of looks/feel/shaft makes such a difference, even in the same club.

For example, had this mizzy jpx hybrid for a while, stock shaft. Really didn't like it to be honest.. but I took a chance and slapped in a trusty Tensei Blue and the thing is now probably my favorite club. Sound is a little nicer, feel much better and so is flight. But again, it still could be hit just fine, but that little extra something helped me really have confidence over the ball. I'd definitely just practice on the range taking short little swings choking up, but also do invest in a fitting if you haven't. Once I got fit and realized I really belonged in mid launching shafts (not low launch rebar like everybody else here seems/wants to play) my game improved a lot. Good luck.

I think it's a mostly matter of personal preference. You want to have confidence in all of your clubs when looking down at them. For me, I think this gives me the best chance to hit good shots.

I have a high launch 3 wood that is 16.5 degrees and then go to two iron like hybrids. I found that I am way more consistent with the iron like hybrids and I would hit wild hooks with traditional type hybrids. I have a mizuno fli-hi is 21 degrees and a maltby KE4 tour HDI hybrid that is 25 degrees. My iron set then starts at 5 iron (27 degrees). I used to have an iron set that started at 2 iron and I hit some good shots with the 2 iron, but I have found that I am more consistent with the hybrid type irons. Additionally, I can hit them from the rough a lot of times and I couldn't do that with the long irons from my iron set.

that's basically what i do with my 3hy...wild hooks, rarely straight. i looked up the iron-like hybrids you describe and that might be exactly what I'm looking for.

tried this out at the range last night with the hybrid. when you say go 50% - are you talking 50% effort in the full swing? or 50% as far as the back swing goes? i found last night i hit the 3hy with a starting line way right. if target line is 12 oclock the ball flight out at 2 oclock. and would come back to a 1-130. 3w i was hitting some rockets starting at 12-1230 and ending up on a line that would be about 7-730 position - i choked down on both and went with a 50% or so backswing length.

any other ideas?
