Zero Offset Irons

I've always been intrigued by various zero offset (or very minimal) irons I see from time to time. Mostly custom Scratch irons. My question is, what effect would zero offset irons have when all else being equal. I've generally used players forged cavity back iron with relatively low offset, but am curious of what zero offset would initially do with the ballflight. I'm guessing it will make the ball go lower and to the right. I just love the look of zero offset, just a bit concerned about what it would do to my ballstriking.

You are correct. Low and right will be the tendency if you aren't used to them.

 

Offset is Very important to most people and they don't even know it.

I've always played irons with zero or minimal offset and I can't say that it causes a low-right ball flight, but definitely more fade biased. For me, its an aesthetics thing that also allows me to adjust the address angle as I see fit to work the ball.

What model iron is that in the pic? Obviously low offset on it but the toes look boxed off as well. Have a buddy trying to find nee irons that are blades, lpwest offset he can get but with boxed off toes. Lol but of course doesn't want to spend the money for something like Miura Baby Blades or other high end boutique irons

That is the most perfect iron shape I've ever seen ! Yes please share what it is (Scratch Custom ?) and more importantly which current manufacturers make something similar. The only thing I've seen is the Yoro MP-66...

R9 b stamps are an affordable option with zero offset. There not the most buttery feeling irons but dor cast they are decent. I have a set of them in my basement somewere.

Idea of zero offset is great. In reality I found them.really hard to hit. Just a fraction of offset makes all the difference

Offset is mostly a visual thing unless you get up into some of the bigger offset numbers, then it can affect ball flight.

 

The head CG is located behind the shaft axis and during the swing the CG wants to align with the axis. This can lead to a forward shaft bow at impact which adds dynamic loft and slightly closes the face. That's why GI clubs have offset; it affords a higher ball flight and fights a slice. The actual dynamic effects are quite minimal though. The visual impact of offset is far more important to some players.

 

Irons that some people say have "no offset", such as Mizuno blades, actually have offset, it's just slight; most people tend to judge clubs with 2-3mm of offset as "no offset." One thing to note: super low offset irons tend to have a sharp leading edge. If the sharpness is reduced, by grinding the leading edge, that lays back the leading edge and creates offset.

I remember that set. One of the best scratch sets I've ever seen. Really great from address and in the bag !
