Shaft Pull Damage

Thinking about buying these shafts (SteelFiber i95) but it looks like at least 3 of the tips were damaged from the pull. I can see some fraying. Anyone have additional insights? Deal or no deal? Thanks.

I've reshafted with some that have very slightly frayed (similar, but maybe a little less than these) and the hosels on the clubs I was using were deep enough that I felt like it was worth a shot. They performed fine, but it all comes down to how good the deal is on them IMO.

I've got zero experience with steelfibers or their makeup, but I don't touch any pulled shaft that shows fraying, especially for irons.

I saw that listing on eBay. At that price it might be worth a shot. Personally I wouldn't pay much more than that though. The steel core should make these more beefy than an all graphite tip.

SteelFibers don't have steel cores. It's a standard graphite shaft with "steel fiber" wound around the the surface.

They will be fine, I have some in a set of i20 irons and the steelfiber's had a couple tips just like that. No issue with mine

I wouldn't touch those. They were way overheated during removal. Some of the The actual graphite wrap is missing on those 3. It's not just cosmetic.

 

only exception would be if they are very cheap and you might want to tip trim them a half inch and throw them in some .370 hosels. This would move the damaged area down away from the top edge of the hosel where you would normally risk breakage.

 

Yes, You can tip trim Taper tips a little and use them in .370 heads. Just like hard stepping them once.

I wouldn't buy them unless I could see them in person and put some pressure on the tips to see if they are still ok. Lose fibers aren't a massive concern, mind you those pics don't look great.

Yes, difficult to pass judgement unless seeing it in person.

Some of the so called fraying looked like old epoxy, can't see if the surface wrap were removed from the tip or not without cleaning them up.

Ask the seller questions directly about the condition of the shaft and express your concern, and his return policy.

Those 3 tips are over prepped / over heated and will eventually fail. I had cw125's and the 7i shaft looked pretty similar -it snapped after about 10 swings.

in the last picture, 3rd shaft from the left looks to have a crack or gouge out of it (bottom of the picture)

I'd be a bit more concerned about getting those tip weights out. Can't say for sure but they look like the brass tip weights for graphite shafts and if they are you have to heat the tips even more to get them loose.

It's perfectly normal for Steelfibers to look like that after pulling. The steel jacket around the outside of the carbon core is fraying a little but that's no issue in of itself since that portion of the shaft is inside the hosel. The shafts can get like that after being installed into some heads like Mizuno's or other tight fitting hosel application.

 

To remove the tip weights some careful drilling is in order. I wouldn't use any more heat on the shafts unless absolutely necessary, so no heat in order to remove the weights. This is always the case of course and why a torch should always be used to pull shafts in the first place, not a heat gun. There is huge misinformation on this last detail where many inexperienced people think using a heat gun is safer than a torch, but the opposite is true, assuming the builder knows what they are doing.

If they are lead weights - I agree but if they are the brass tip weights (which they look like to me due to the thin flange - but can't say for sure), drilling really isn't a good option. The drill bit will easily wander off of the harder brass and into the softer graphite and not stay true to the ID of the shaft.

I've seen more graphite shaft ruined by over-prepping than heat to be honest. The thin wire mesh on the outside of the SF shafts will often fray upon removal, but will not compromise the shaft. However, some DO look like they may be over-prepped.

I would definitely buy those for a good deal. A little fraying is just fine.
