I currently have both apps on my phone. I don't use the GPS feature, I like using my range finder more. Which app do you prefer and why?

I personally use TheGrint and pay the $20 annually for the Pro membership for the added stats and trends. My decision was mainly based on the reviews on the internet, and the commitment from the developers to reinvest money back into the app to keep improving it. Would be nice to hear other thoughts on 18Birdies as they seem to be the more popular choice with their aggressive marketing campaigns.

 

I'd like to eventually try Golfmetrics, which is a bit pricey, but the strokes gained statistic is far superior to just the regular FIR, GIR, putts per round, etc that you get from the usual apps.

Not a huge fan of TheGrint but that opinion is a bit skewed because I haven't used it in a couple years. I use 18Birdies just because I like the interface and it has a fun way of incorporating friends into the same game. TheGrint could totally do the same thing, I just don't know about it because I'm stubborn. I find something I like and stick with it.

Grint user mostly because the wrx web tour. That said not a fan of the app functionality slow not sized right numerous technical issues. the desktop interface however is very very good and that is usually how I post all of my rounds. Dont use GPS. Not a huge fan of 18 birdies spokeswoman either.

18Birdies just added Scott McNealy, founder of Sun Microsystems and Maverick McNealy's dad as a technical adviser. Seems like with their quick growth they'll be reinvesting into the tech side of the company.

I've only used the app. I'll check out the web interface now.

18 birdies is nice but for some reason every now and then during a round, I'll get a distance that is WAY off.. like... double or half the distance in reality. I think maybe it's just lag in the software or the GPS being wacky because it's usually very good. The built in slope feature is nice since my range finder is currently MIA.

Joined Grint way back in the day to get a free calculated handicap and get some stats online. Fast forward to this year, and I hadn't touched my account in over 2 years. The app is pretty good and responsive, I want to try out the scoring with side games (automatically scores for stableford, skins, and handful of other games) for multiple players. I did download 18 birdies recently and need to take it for a test drive to see how it compares. I really only use the GPS for tee shot or layup if my rangefinder is having a hard time picking up on a marker for carry distance or to a hazard, etc.

I have been using 18birdies. I use it for yardage as I don't have a rangefinder. The times I check with the guys who do have a rangefinder, the yardage is no different. So to me 18 Birdies is great, free and more accurate than those cart GPS touch screens.

 

I don't do all the scoring and other stuff on it, I prefer the scorecard and pencil. I used to have the nike app and tried it on there.....it's too time consuming and i'm out playing golf, I don't want to be staring at my phone all day.

 

Don't know Grint, will have to check it out!

I found you just have to move around a little then walk back and it re-adjusts... but I know what your talking about.

I use Swing by Swing for GPS and scorecard then input to TheGrint through web interface to keep handicap. Kind of double entry but I'm too lazy to figure out how to use TheGrint for GPS and have always like Swing by Swing for that. Only takes a minute to put in the round into Grint while looking at the Swing by Swing scorecard.

at $20yr it is still cheaper than paying the USGA so worth is relative I guess. I am still in my first year I was going to re evaluate it at the end of the year to see if I would actually do anything with the additional stat tracking other than look at them and say oh thats nice or oh I suck there. I really have not analyzed any of the current free stats or made changes to my game because of them so take that for what it is worth.

 

For a while they had a deal where you could do a one time donation over $20 and it was a lifetime pro membership. I just logged in to see if that was still a thing and sadly it is not.

I have the Grint and love it. Making it more like a social type app with feeds is great to see how your friends are playing.
