The important question is: why would you want to do this much of an adjustment to that club?

I got a great deal on it new, so impulsively bought it. I like it, but I have two others in that degree range that I like as much or more.....what I really need is a gap wedge. The tech guy has been working on clubs for 16 years and made it sound like he will know when it reaches its max.... we'll see...dropping it off Saturday for him.

The tech at my shop thinks he may be able to bend my graphite shafted Cleveland 588 Rotex 2.0 from 56 to 52, maybe 51.

My question is, does it make it less likely to happen if it's graphite?

Thanks

No. It makes no difference what the shaft is made of. What will happen, is the bounce will decrease in the same amount as the loft....and the offset will increase

It's a terrible idea. You should sell it and buy a gap wedge. Maybe you can trade it. If it has any type of plating it will almost surely develop cracks.

As a general rule, no club should ever be adjusted more than 2 degrees weak or strong.

It will be a bastxxx of a club with too much offset and very little bounce if you bend it 5 degrees. Any "tech" that would volunteer to do it is a quack.

As previously stated the shaft is totally irrelevant.

I knew the bounce/loft stuff but was wondering about the graphite. Thanks!

The guy is only going to do what the customer asks. All he can do is tell him what will happen and whether or not they think it is a good idea. I've bent several clubs that much, but there was significant grinding to recreate the bounce. The offset might be an issue to consider. The wedges worked great btw so don't condem them so quickly. The rule of thumb about 2* is not really applicable to wedges since there quite often is enough bounce to accommodate more bending. It just depends on the wedges.

Good stuff, thanks for the information. It currently has 14 degrees of loft, so plenty to spare.. and it has very little offset stock, so if it added a bit, I could probably live with it. It's a black head so if wouldn't be glaring :)

To Jag's point tho, the black finish may crack.... probably the biggest risk I guess.

The graphite shaft isn't the issue. Loft adjustments this extreme will affect the playability when it comes to bounce and offset. With loft adjustments, there's really no need to change more than 2 degrees.

Bend it and give it a try, but it might play funny

Wouldn't advise it. Keep it as a backup sw or sell it. Anything more than 3* usually wrecks the club especially a wedge.

As the OP stated, he has 14º of bounce and so bending it 5º will still leave him with 9º of bounce which is still plenty for a gap wedge. Maybe not ideal, but likely more than enough. It's not like he's experimenting on a $600 driver so if he decides that it was a bust, he likely won't be crying in his soup over it. He may like it.

I had a 56º that I bent to 50º and I loved it. Used it for years until I wore it out. I also have a couple of others that were abortions and sit in the "well that didn't fu**ing work" section. A guy with tools and imagination combined with a long winter don't always go hand in hand. :)
