Playing Orlando 3 Days.... To Play or Not to Play 36 one day

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Heading down to Orlando in two weeks for an impromptu golf trip. Playing ON Panther, Cypress N/S, and Celebration. Was thinking of squeezing in 36 at cypress by jumping onto the New Course in the afternoon. Never played 36 in one day and wanted to get some feedback on overall exhaustion after and any insight on 36 when temps are in the mid 80's (weather channel estimate)

Thanks

What kind of shape are you in? I think mid 80s would not be to bad to get 36 holes in. I played 36 holes 3 days in a row in July in Myrtle Beach and I am in terrible shape. Just be sure to start hydrating the night before and keep hydrating on the course.

I play 36 a day quite a bit when I'm on vacation, often several days in a row. I'm considered in shape only because round is a shape.

Keep hydrated. Stay away from a lot of caffeine. Don't spend a long time on the range warming up before either round. A dozen balls at most should get you loose. If you take a ton of full practice swings before each shot, don't.

I think one must be a bit realistic about the second round of the day. You'll likely run out of gas on the back nine. I wouldn't let that stop me from playing a 2nd round, especially on the New course. 'Great course. Take an extra club, and don't over-swing. If you struggle, chalk it up as a learning experience, enjoy the scenery, and focus on your short game.

I'm very active and hit the gym several times a week, plus I'll usually walk at least one round a week. Thanks for the feedback!

I thinks that's exactly what I was thinking. Appreciate the advice

I think you'll struggle to play 36 at cypress in late October. Those are not quick rounds - I'd expect something approaching 5 hours each, and you've only got 11.5 hours of daylight to work with. Keep in mind that you can't "play fast" because of the three nines setup - they won't let you tee off of "ten" until the people for whom that's "one" have all teed off.

Ive done a few long weekend golf trips to Orlando in December/January. I've had more than one day that I've played 54 holes plus at Grand Cypress on the N/S/E nines. You come off one nine, and a starter tells you which nine to go to without even asking. I prefer the three nines to the New Course, however, the New is worth playing at least once. I also recommend Orange County National.

I think a key is that one has to have a very early tee time in order to allowing time for a second round. I usually try to grab the first tee time of the day, which makes the second round of fairly easy to complete. This works even if you run into a traffic jam making the turn.

This is how I got totally hosed at Grand Cypress earlier this year. First off the tee, played the front nine (two ball in carts) in a shade over an hour, hit the “turn” and got told that it would be an hour and 15 minutes before I could tee off 10.

Overall Grand Cypress was one of the worst golf “resort” experiences that I’ve had.

Wow. That sucks. I've been to GC 4 or 5 times and never experienced anything like that. If I had, I wouldn't go back.

We played 36 at Cypress end of Nov last year.

Teed of at 7:50 and 1:10 as a fourseome.

Easy.

We also played 36 at OCN at the same trip.

7:50 and 1:30.

Also no problem.

I highly recommend OCN over Cypress !!!

PS

You‘re talking about 36 riding, right? That‘ absolutely no problem.

Looking to play 36 Wednesday the 25th of Oct and Cypress will be easiest because I could get it on one ground. Streamsong 36 might be out to ft my price range at $400+. Any suggestions on a course( or courses) to play 36 in the day for $200 or less?

Replay rate on streamsong is 120. So about 330 for two rounds on same day makes for a better day. Cypress is such a typical Florida course. If that’s what you’re into by all means. If you don’t want to fork the money out I suggest Bella collina and el campeon. Both courses are relatively close and will keep your budget under 200.

Southern dunes is in superb condition right now. I wouldn’t mind playing that course twice. It’s well manicured. Enough undulations.

I’m just not a fan of the usual around Disney area. Celebration. Reunion. Disney courses. Orange County. They all look the same to me. Well manicured. You can’t go wrong but they are one and done for me.

Two rounds at Streamsong would be tough unless you stay at the resort there. It's an hour+ drive from Orlando, so you'd have to leave before sunrise. Also, the courses are walking only, so the rounds won't be quick. I've done 36 a day there twice in February, but I was staying in the area.

streamsong is walking only for morning rounds currently for red and blue. you can take a cart out in the afternoon. you're coming in october 25 so you should have roughly 11 hours of daylight.

I walked the black course yesterday at 9am and finished roughly around 145.

you're coming on the 25th which is a weekday; i doubt it'll be busy in the afternoon and you can finish your afternoon round pretty fast with a cart on red/blue ONLY.

orlando to streamsong is 1.2 hours there to give you an idea.

also the black course is walking regardless time of day; and you don't need a caddy for the black course tbh. They can't read greens for anything. It's just a giant roller coaster ride once you are on the greens;

here's my little review on the black

Appreciate all the feedback! This is my first trip to play Florida golf, so I don't know that I'll get too bored( even if every course is similar) and I'm hoping these courses will be a nice change from Long Island NY. I'll think about streamsong and the others, but sadly I'm a single; do you guys see any problems booking a tee time?

Heard good things that's why I'm playing OCN Panther in the afternoon when I land the first day. I didn't consider if for the next day so I could mix it up.

No, it shouldn't be a problem booking as a single, especially midweek. I've been there twice as a single with no issues.

That said, I would save Streamsong for your next trip. Yes, the courses around Orlando are typical "Florida" course, but they fine. OCN, Southern Dunes, and Grand Cypress are excellent. I wouldn't drive over an hour each way in the dark and try to cram in two rounds. 'Keep in mind that although the Red and Blue allow carts in the afternoon, it's cart path only, and the path can be quite a ways from the fairways and greens. Ugh. I'd rather walk.

I play streamsong 4-5 times a year since it opened. Most time two rounds a day. The routing is done that the greens and tee box is next to each other making it very easy to play compared to your typical Florida courses. I have never heard of a rule of “cart path only”. They will advise you to drive your cart into the fairway instead of driving into the natural habitat. This is actually easier. It drains well. Best drainage in all of Florida. The only time you don’t drive your cart to the ball is when you get closer to the green. I also don’t advise walking the blue course. There are mountains and dunes you will be climbing up to. Red is the best walk in the public Florida scene.

All the orlando courses you stated will have holes that are 50 yards apart here and there. Walking is not advised.

If you plan to play an afternoon round when you get off the plane, go to southern dunes. You can play crooked cat and panther lake the next day. My recommendation still stand. Streamsong is the better public play even with the drive.
