A really good read. As an Englishman I'd love to see Willett regain some form and get back to his best.

 

That said, I can't for the life of me fathom why a player already suffering back problems would choose to go to the one coach (Foley) who is notorious for wrecking players backs. I do hope we're not going to see him like this in future...

Very honest self assessment of what he's faced since winning the Masters. He's not alone...David Duval after winning the Open Championship became lost because he didn't know what was next. When you're at the very top, there is only 1 way to go and we've seen it with so many players. Golf is a difficult game at any level and kudos to Danny for sharing.

It really was a startlingly honest piece from Willett. He doesn’t have a huge amount of fans in the US but those that he does have in Europe will I think take a lot from what was written. From a European point of view I really hope that he gets his game back to the level that it was.

I too was surprised at the honesty of it all, if I'm honest I thought I was going to read an article with a few more excuses in it but was pleasantly surprised at what I read.

Very good read. You see it so often with major winners that aren't 'ready' for what comes next. It's different for a young Rory McIlroy or Jordan Spieth who were groomed to be superstars from a young age and are comfortable in that environment. They see their natural progression in the multiple majors zone, so winning one is not as big of a deal.

 

For the 'regular' player, who may have only dreamed of winning a major as the absolute pinnacle of their career, it's tough to set new targets because you never saw a situation past the win. Winning a major really does change your life.

 

Willett will never give up that feeling of winning the Masters, but if Spieth had've parred the 12th par 3 and won the tournament, I think Willett would have won 2-3 more European Tour events and have been a lot higher in the World Rankings. It's funny how it works out.

Without glossing over the great article and Dannys unique situation, this scenario of post Major spiral has been seen before, Paul Lawrie also suffered depression after his 1999 win and the creeping thoughts that he didn't deserve the jug.

 

Someone with the strength of character of Danny will come back. I met him at the Dunhill after his Masters win and despite being in demand everywhere he still took the time to stop, chat to a fan and pose for a picture. Golf isn't a game of perfect and mental fortitude can sometimes be a better tool than the picture perfect swing or the most technically perfect Trackman numbers. You can't distil "winning" into those attributes alone. Work ethic, grit and determination are the things which will take you to the top, everytime.

 

I wish him all the best and look forward to seeing him in contention again.

That was impressive. As I was reading this, I started to mentally root for this guy. He talked about the pain pills and still swinging the club in pain, and I thought this guy may be done both physically and mentally. However, as I finished the article I got the feeling he will be just fine. He again brought up his family and sensed how he felt of their importance. I am most definitely rooting for him.

I enjoyed his True honest feelings as a Athlete. Competition is tough in any sport but his experience was refreshing.

Great read and wish the guy well. Everyone handles the pressure differently and certainly makes you appreciate a guy like Tiger Woods that much more. He deals with things none of us can even fathom.

That was excellent. My initial instinct is to cringe at the thought of a player's blog and in the case of say Pat Perez's, the content backed that up.

But this was pieced together well and came across as genuine from start to finish.

It's especially interesting, as it comes during a bad stretch of golf for Willett, normally we only get the redemption angle after the struggle, not while the player is still mired in it.

I agree in regards to the choke on 12 but Willett still shot a bogey free 67 on a masters sunday and played some stella golf under serious pressure when he took the lead.

 

It's funny how there is all the bashing on Willetts masters victory but no one says similar in regards to Schwartzel when rory imploded on the back 9 in 2011
